    Automation of product packaging for industrial applications

    [EN] This work presents a robotic-based solution devised to automate the product packaging in industrial environments. Although the proposed approach is illustrated for the case of the shoe industry, it applies to many other products requiring similar packaging processes. The main advantage obtained with the automated task is that productivity could be significantly increased. The key algorithms for the developed robot system are: object detection using a computer vision system; object grasping; trajectory planning with collision avoidance; and operator interaction using a force/torque sensor.     Enhancement of external wall decoration material for the building in safety inspection method

    As buildings wear out, external wall tiles or attachments will usually fall off, sometimes causing human injuries. At present, the method employed for middle-high rise buildings is mainly the method of visual inspection. The inspection results in using this method are affected by the factors of subjectivity, safety and cost. This study aims to provide a lowercost and more efficient evaluation method for inspecting the status of buildings’ external walls. This proposed method implements Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) technology and high-resolution photographic equipment on Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) which can improve the image recording of the detection process, as well as the overall visual detection technology, and solve the existing visual detection problem of inspectors. Also, the images detected by visual inspection and UAV high-resolution video are used to develop a suitable visual evaluation process and test table for external walls. Through the test results of several cases, the deterioration status and needs for maintenance are taken into account according to the degree of performance indicators. The findings of the study is that the proposed mechanism is more efficient and lower cost for the detection of external walls or ancillary structures’ abnormal status, which is easy to use in practice

    Composites for hydraulic structures: a review Composites have evolved over the years and are making major in-roads into the marine, aviation and other industries where corrosions and self-weight are the major impediments to advancing the state-of-the-art. Civil Works engineers have been reluctant to make use of these composite advantages, partially because of the absence of well documented success stories, accepted design and construction practices or specifications, and limited understanding of composites, higher initial costs and others. A few navigational structures using FRP composites have been designed, manufactured and installed in the United States of America and Netherlands, recently. US Army Corps of Engineers is embarking on higher volume applications of composites for navigational structures. This report is aimed at summarizing the state of the art of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites for hydraulic structures including design, construction, evaluation and repair. After a brief review of history and introduction of fundamentals of composites, their manufacturing techniques, properties, and recent field applications are presented, including FRP rebar for bridge decks, other highway and railway structures, gratings, underground storage tank, pavement, sheet and pipe piling, FRP wraps, moveable bridges, utility poles, etc. Focus is placed on applications of composites in waterfront, marine, navigational structures including lock doors, gates, and protection systems. Design of hydraulic composite structures is presented for the cases available, such as design of FRP recess panel, Wicket Gates, Miter Gates, FRP slides and repair of corroded steel piles. This report also reviews engineering science issues such as fracture and fatigue, durability, creep and relaxation, UV degradation, impact resistance, and fire performance. The report concludes with summary remarks and recommendations after a discussion on operation and maintenance guidance including nondestructive evaluation inspection techniques. Intention is to provide up to date information on composite design, manufacturing and evaluation methodologies that are applicable for fabrication and maintenance of navigational structures. This report is a living document with advances taking place with time as waterborne transport infrastructure community makes progress with FRP systems. This report is expected to be useful for those decision-makers in government, consultants, designers, contractors, maintenance and rehab engineers whose focus is to minimize traffic interruptions while maximizing cost effectiveness

    Parametric Study of Film Formation and Curing Process for Film Insert Molding

    The purpose of this work is to address a manufacturing problem related to the technology of Film Insert Molding (FIM) for the production of vehicle interior parts. The problem occurs in the first stages of the process during the production of the film, prior to injection molding. The film was distorted in some cases. When the distortion of the film was high, the film was not sticking to the mold properly, showing a tendency to pop out. This led to pinching of the film in the mold which caused two main failures: flashing of the resin and ripping of the film. A particular emphasis was put toward the process stages of forming and UV curing, that were identified through a root causes analysis, to induce major distortion of the shape of the film. With the use of a laser scanner and analysis software: Geomagic control X, it was possible to compare the shape of manufactured parts to the original CAD model containing the nominal shape of the film. The analysis was based on two full-factorial plans, one for forming of the film and one for UV curing it. Using analysis of the variance (ANOVA) of the deviations, it was possible to detect the influence of the factors on particular points of the surface of the film. It was found that parameters related to forming: dwell time and temperature, had a significant influence on the deviation of the film, the first accounting for about 50% of the change in deviation. Once the forming parameters were set to achieve the lowest deviation, parameters related to UV curing: UV oven conveyor speed and ink size, did not have an high influence on the distortion of the film

    Real-time, noise and drift resilient formaldehyde sensing at room temperature with aerogel filaments

    Formaldehyde, a known human carcinogen, is a common indoor air pollutant. However, its real-time and selective recognition from interfering gases remains challenging, especially for low-power sensors suffering from noise and baseline drift. We report a fully 3D-printed quantum dot/graphene-based aerogel sensor for highly sensitive and real-time recognition of formaldehyde at room temperature. By optimising the morphology and doping of the printed structures, we achieve a record-high response of 15.23 percent for 1 parts-per-million formaldehyde and an ultralow detection limit of 8.02 parts-per-billion consuming only 130 uW power. Based on measured dynamic response snapshots, we also develop an intelligent computational algorithm for robust and accurate detection in real time despite simulated substantial noise and baseline drift, hitherto unachievable for room-temperature sensors. Our framework in combining materials engineering, structural design and computational algorithm to capture dynamic response offers unprecedented real-time identification capabilities of formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds at room temperature.Comment: Main manuscript: 21 pages, 5 figure.     From undesired flaws to esthetic assets: A digital framework enabling artistic explorations of erroneous geometric features of robotically formed molds

    Until recently, digital fabrication research in architecture has aimed to eliminate manufacturing errors. However, a novel notion has just been established—intentional computational infidelity. Inspired by this notion, we set out to develop means than can transform the errors in fabrication from an undesired complication to a creative opportunity. We carried out design experiment-based investigations, which culminated in the construction of a framework enabling fundamental artistic explorations of erroneous geometric features of robotically formed molds. The framework consists of digital processes, assisting in the explorations of mold errors, and physical processes, enabling the inclusion of physical feedback in digital explorations. Other complementary elements embrace an implementation workflow, an enabling digital toolset and a visual script demonstrating how imprecise artistic explorations can be included within the computational environment. Our framework application suggests that the exploration of geometrical errors aids the emergence of unprecedented design features that would not have arisen if error elimination were the ultimate design goal. Our conclusion is that welcoming error into the design process can reinstate the role of art, craft, and material agency therein. This can guide the practice and research of architectural computing onto a new territory of esthetic and material innovation
