    A Semantic Framework for Declarative and Procedural Knowledge

    In any scientic domain, the full set of data and programs has reached an-ome status, i.e. it has grown massively. The original article on the Semantic Web describes the evolution of a Web of actionable information, i.e.\ud information derived from data through a semantic theory for interpreting the symbols. In a Semantic Web, methodologies are studied for describing, managing and analyzing both resources (domain knowledge) and applications (operational knowledge) - without any restriction on what and where they\ud are respectively suitable and available in the Web - as well as for realizing automatic and semantic-driven work\ud ows of Web applications elaborating Web resources.\ud This thesis attempts to provide a synthesis among Semantic Web technologies, Ontology Research, Knowledge and Work\ud ow Management. Such a synthesis is represented by Resourceome, a Web-based framework consisting of two components which strictly interact with each other: an ontology-based and domain-independent knowledge manager system (Resourceome KMS) - relying on a knowledge model where resource and operational knowledge are contextualized in any domain - and a semantic-driven work ow editor, manager and agent-based execution system (Resourceome WMS).\ud The Resourceome KMS and the Resourceome WMS are exploited in order to realize semantic-driven formulations of work\ud ows, where activities are semantically linked to any involved resource. In the whole, combining the use of domain ontologies and work ow techniques, Resourceome provides a exible domain and operational knowledge organization, a powerful engine for semantic-driven work\ud ow composition, and a distributed, automatic and\ud transparent environment for work ow execution

    Working Performatively with Interactive 3D Printing: An artistic practice utilising interactive programming for computational manufacturing and livecoding

    This thesis explores the liminal space where personal computational art and design practices and mass-manufacturing technologies intersect. It focuses on what it could look and feel like to be a computationally-augmented, creative practitioner working with 3D printing in a more programmatic, interactive way. The major research contribution is the introduction of a future-looking practice of Interactive 3D Printing (I3DP).I3DP is articulated using the Cognitive Dimensions of Notations in terms of associated user activities and design trade-offs. Another contribution is the design, development, and analysis of a working I3DP system called LivePrinter. LivePrinter is evaluated through a series of qualitiative user studies and a personal computational art practice, including livecoding performances and 3D form-making

    Self-adaptive fitness in evolutionary processes

    Most optimization algorithms or methods in artificial intelligence can be regarded as evolutionary processes. They start from (basically) random guesses and produce increasingly better results with respect to a given target function, which is defined by the process's designer. The value of the achieved results is communicated to the evolutionary process via a fitness function that is usually somewhat correlated with the target function but does not need to be exactly the same. When the values of the fitness function change purely for reasons intrinsic to the evolutionary process, i.e., even though the externally motivated goals (as represented by the target function) remain constant, we call that phenomenon self-adaptive fitness. We trace the phenomenon of self-adaptive fitness back to emergent goals in artificial chemistry systems, for which we develop a new variant based on neural networks. We perform an in-depth analysis of diversity-aware evolutionary algorithms as a prime example of how to effectively integrate self-adaptive fitness into evolutionary processes. We sketch the concept of productive fitness as a new tool to reason about the intrinsic goals of evolution. We introduce the pattern of scenario co-evolution, which we apply to a reinforcement learning agent competing against an evolutionary algorithm to improve performance and generate hard test cases and which we also consider as a more general pattern for software engineering based on a solid formal framework. Multiple connections to related topics in natural computing, quantum computing and artificial intelligence are discovered and may shape future research in the combined fields.Die meisten Optimierungsalgorithmen und die meisten Verfahren in Bereich künstlicher Intelligenz können als evolutionäre Prozesse aufgefasst werden. Diese beginnen mit (prinzipiell) zufällig geratenen Lösungskandidaten und erzeugen dann immer weiter verbesserte Ergebnisse für gegebene Zielfunktion, die der Designer des gesamten Prozesses definiert hat. Der Wert der erreichten Ergebnisse wird dem evolutionären Prozess durch eine Fitnessfunktion mitgeteilt, die normalerweise in gewissem Rahmen mit der Zielfunktion korreliert ist, aber auch nicht notwendigerweise mit dieser identisch sein muss. Wenn die Werte der Fitnessfunktion sich allein aus für den evolutionären Prozess intrinsischen Gründen ändern, d.h. auch dann, wenn die extern motivierten Ziele (repräsentiert durch die Zielfunktion) konstant bleiben, nennen wir dieses Phänomen selbst-adaptive Fitness. Wir verfolgen das Phänomen der selbst-adaptiven Fitness zurück bis zu künstlichen Chemiesystemen (artificial chemistry systems), für die wir eine neue Variante auf Basis neuronaler Netze entwickeln. Wir führen eine tiefgreifende Analyse diversitätsbewusster evolutionärer Algorithmen durch, welche wir als Paradebeispiel für die effektive Integration von selbst-adaptiver Fitness in evolutionäre Prozesse betrachten. Wir skizzieren das Konzept der produktiven Fitness als ein neues Werkzeug zur Untersuchung von intrinsischen Zielen der Evolution. Wir führen das Muster der Szenarien-Ko-Evolution (scenario co-evolution) ein und wenden es auf einen Agenten an, der mittels verstärkendem Lernen (reinforcement learning) mit einem evolutionären Algorithmus darum wetteifert, seine Leistung zu erhöhen bzw. härtere Testszenarien zu finden. Wir erkennen dieses Muster auch in einem generelleren Kontext als formale Methode in der Softwareentwicklung. Wir entdecken mehrere Verbindungen der besprochenen Phänomene zu Forschungsgebieten wie natural computing, quantum computing oder künstlicher Intelligenz, welche die zukünftige Forschung in den kombinierten Forschungsgebieten prägen könnten

    The conservation of monuments and historic sites is one of the most challenging problems facing modern civilization. It involves, in inextricable patterns, factors belonging to different fields (cultural, humanistic, social, technical, economical, administrative) and the requirements of safety and use appear to be (or often are) in conflict with the respect of the integrity of the monuments. The complexity of the topic is such that a shared framework of reference is still lacking among art historians, architects, structural and geotechnical engineers. And while there are exemplary cases of an integral approach to each building element with its static and architectural function, as a material witness to the culture and construction techniques of the original historical period, there are still examples of uncritical reliance on modern technology leading to the substitution from earlier structures to new ones, preserving only the iconic look of the original monument. Geotechnical Engineering for the Preservation of Monuments and Historic Sites III collects the contributions to the eponymous 3rd International ISSMGE TC301 Symposium (Naples, Italy, 22-24 June 2022).     From Signal to Social : Steps Towards Pervasive Social Context

    The widespread adoption of smartphones with advanced sensing, computing and data transfer capabilities has made scientific studies of human social behavior possible at a previously unprecedented scale. It has also allowed context-awareness to become a natural feature in many applications using features such as activity recognition and location information. However, one of the most important aspects of context remains largely untapped at scale, i.e. social interactions and social context. Social interaction sensing has been explored using smartphones and specialized hardware for research purposes within computational social science and ubiquitous computing, but several obstacles remain to make it usable in practice by applications at industrial scale. In this thesis, I explore methods of physical proximity sensing and extraction of social context information from user-generated data for the purpose of context-aware applications. Furthermore, I explore the application space made possible through these methods, especially in the class of use cases that are characterized by embodied social agency, through field studies and a case study.A major concern when collecting context information is the impact on user privacy. I have performed a user study in which I have surveyed the user attitudes towards the privacy implications of proximity sensing. Finally, I present results from quantitatively estimating the sensitivity of a simple type of context information, i.e. application usage, in terms of risk of user re-identification

    This volume contains the papers presented at E-Vote-ID 2021, the Sixth International Joint Conference on Electronic Voting, held during October 5–8, 2021. Due to the extraordinary situation brought about by the COVID-19, the conference was held online for the second consecutive edition, instead of in the traditional venue in Bregenz, Austria. The E-Vote-ID conference is the result of the merger of the EVOTE and Vote-ID conferences, with first EVOTE conference taking place 17 years ago in Austria. Since that conference in 2004, over 1000 experts have attended the venue, including scholars, practitioners, authorities, electoral managers, vendors, and PhD students. The conference focuses on the most relevant debates on the development of electronic voting, from aspects relating to security and usability through to practical experiences and applications of voting systems, also including legal, social, or political aspects, amongst others, and has turned out to be an important global referent in relation to this issue

E-Vote-ID Conference resulted from the merging of EVOTE and Vote-ID and counting up to 17 years since the _rst E-Vote conference in Austria. Since that conference in 2004, over 1000 experts have attended the venue, including scholars, practitioners, authorities, electoral managers, vendors, and PhD Students. The conference collected the most relevant debates on the development of Electronic Voting, from aspects relating to security and usability through to practical experiences and applications of voting systems, also including legal, social or political aspects, amongst others; turning out to be an important global referent in relation to this issue. Also, this year, the conference consisted of: · Security, Usability and Technical Issues Track · Administrative, Legal, Political and Social Issues Track · Election and Practical Experiences Track · PhD Colloquium, Poster and Demo Session on the day before the conference E-VOTE-ID 2021 received 49 submissions, being, each of them, reviewed by 3 to 5 program committee members, using a double blind review process. As a result, 27 papers were accepted for its presentation in the conference. The selected papers cover a wide range of topics connected with electronic voting, including experiences and revisions of the real uses of E-voting systems and corresponding processes in elections. We would also like to thank the German Informatics Society (Gesellschaft für Informatik) with its ECOM working group and KASTEL for their partnership over many years. Further we would like to thank the Swiss Federal Chancellery and the Regional Government of Vorarlberg for their kind support.     The question of cinematic VR production has been on the table for several years. This is due to the peculiarity of VR language which, even if it is de ned by an image that surrounds and immerses the viewer rather than placing them, as in the classic cinematic situation, in front of a screen, relies decisively on an audiovisual basis that cannot help but refer to cinematic practices of constructing visual and auditory experience. Despite this, it would be extremely reductive to consider VR as the mere transposition of elements of cinematic language. The VR medium is endowed with its own speci city, which inevitably impacts its forms of narration. We thus need to investigate the narrative forms it uses that are probably related to cinematic language, and draw their strength from the same basis, drink from the same well, but develop according to di erent trajectories, thus displaying di erent links and a nities
