    Energy managed reporting for wireless sensor networks

    In this paper, we propose a technique to extend the network lifetime of a wireless sensor network, whereby each sensor node decides its individual network involvement based on its own energy resources and the information contained in each packet. The information content is ascertained through a system of rules describing prospective events in the sensed environment, and how important such events are. While the packets deemed most important are propagated by all sensor nodes, low importance packets are handled by only the nodes with high energy reserves. Results obtained from simulations depicting a wireless sensor network used to monitor pump temperature in an industrial environment have shown that a considerable increase in the network lifetime and network connectivity can be obtained.     Optimal routing for automated emergency vehicle response for incident intervention in a traffic network

    Congestion constitutes a major problem in modern urban traffic networks if not well managed. Its monstrous effects, on occasions, can paralyze a traffic network eating deep into the productive hours of commuters as well as vehicles and persons on essential services. Particularly affected are incidence-intervention vehicles such as emergency vehicles and fire-fighting vehicles. Whatever the cause of the congestion, its effect is counter-productive and an indication of an inefficient traffic network. This work, as presented in this paper, is concerned about the issue of traffic route management for emergency service (emergency vehicle) for which a delay of few minutes may cause tremendous loss of lives and properties. The route management scheme built for this purpose integrates information obtained from the use of Radio Frequency Signals for Traffic Light Preemption at Intersections in a Proteus Simulator environment and the use Arc GIS as a mode of routing the emergency vehicle from base to the incidence location, then to Health Facilities and from thence back to the emergency vehicle base in an optimal routing time. Traffic information are loaded into the Arc GIS environment which predicts the required tri-legged optimal routing and its duration using Dijkstra’s algorithm. Different scenarios of emergency vehicle, incidence and health facility locations were exploited using the scheme and compared with situations without their implementation. The proposed scheme outperforms the trial and error routing of emergency vehicles and can be embedded into traffic advisory system or as stand-alone emergency vehicle management system.Keywords: GIS, Dijkstra’s algorithm, Facility Location, Emergency-Vehicle, Optimal Routin

    MakerFluidics: low cost microfluidics for synthetic biology

    Recent advancements in multilayer, multicellular, genetic logic circuits often rely on manual intervention throughout the computation cycle and orthogonal signals for each chemical “wire”. These constraints can prevent genetic circuits from scaling. Microfluidic devices can be used to mitigate these constraints. However, continuous-flow microfluidics are largely designed through artisanal processes involving hand-drawing features and accomplishing design rule checks visually: processes that are also inextensible. Additionally, continuous-flow microfluidic routing is only a consideration during chip design and, once built, the routing structure becomes “frozen in silicon,” or for many microfluidic chips “frozen in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)”; any changes to fluid routing often require an entirely new device and control infrastructure. The cost of fabricating and controlling a new device is high in terms of time and money; attempts to reduce one cost measure are, generally, paid through increases in the other. This work has three main thrusts: to create a microfluidic fabrication framework, called MakerFluidics, that lowers the barrier to entry for designing and fabricating microfluidics in a manner amenable to automation; to prove this methodology can design, fabricate, and control complex and novel microfluidic devices; and to demonstrate the methodology can be used to solve biologically-relevant problems. Utilizing accessible technologies, rapid prototyping, and scalable design practices, the MakerFluidics framework has demonstrated its ability to design, fabricate and control novel, complex and scalable microfludic devices. This was proven through the development of a reconfigurable, continuous-flow routing fabric driven by a modular, scalable primitive called a transposer. In addition to creating complex microfluidic networks, MakerFluidics was deployed in support of cutting-edge, application-focused research at the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory. Informed by a design of experiments approach using the parametric rapid prototyping capabilities made possible by MakerFluidics, a plastic blood--bacteria separation device was optimized, demonstrating that the new device geometry can separate bacteria from blood while operating at 275% greater flow rate as well as reduce the power requirement by 82% for equivalent separation performance when compared to the state of the art. Ultimately, MakerFluidics demonstrated the ability to design, fabricate, and control complex and practical microfluidic devices while lowering the barrier to entry to continuous-flow microfluidics, thus democratizing cutting edge technology beyond a handful of well-resourced and specialized labs

    Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) of System-on-Package (SOP)

    Electromagnetic interference (EMI) issues are expected to be crucial for next-generation system-on-package (SOP) integrated high-performance digital LSIs and for radio frequency (RF) and analog circuits. Ordinarily in SOPs, high-performance digital LSIs are sources of EMI, while RF and analog circuits are affected by EMI (victims). This paper describes the following aspects of EMI in SOPs: 1) die/package-level EMI; 2) substrate-level EMI; 3) electromagnetic modeling and simulation; and 4) near electromagnetic field measurement. First, LSI designs are discussed with regard to radiated emission. The signal-return path loop and switching current in the power/ground line are inherent sources of EMI. The EMI of substrate, which work as coupling paths or unwanted antennas, is described. Maintaining the return current path is an important aspect of substrate design for suppressing EMI and for maintaining signal integrity (SI). In addition, isolating and suppressing the resonance of the DC power bus in a substrate is another important design aspect for EMI and for power integrity (PI). Various electromagnetic simulation methodologies are introduced as indispensable design tools for achieving high-performance SOPs without EMI problems. Measurement techniques for near electric and magnetic fields are explained, as they are necessary to confirm the appropriateness of designs and to investigate the causes of EMI problems.     Floorplan-Aware High Performance NoC Design

    Las actuales arquitecturas de m�ltiples n�cleos como los chip multiprocesadores (CMP) y soluciones multiprocesador para sistemas dentro del chip (MPSoCs) han adoptado a las redes dentro del chip (NoC) como elemento -ptimo para la inter-conexi-n de los diversos elementos de dichos sistemas. En este sentido, fabricantes de CMPs y MPSoCs han adoptado NoCs sencillas, generalmente con una topolog'a en malla o anillo, ya que son suficientes para satisfacer las necesidades de los sistemas actuales. Sin embargo a medida que los requerimientos del sistema -- baja latencia y alto rendimiento -- se hacen m�s exigentes, estas redes tan simples dejan de ser una soluci-n real. As', la comunidad investigadora ha propuesto y analizado NoCs m�s complejas. No obstante, estas soluciones son m�s dif'ciles de implementar -- especialmente los enlaces largos -- haciendo que este tipo de topolog'as complejas sean demasiado costosas o incluso inviables. En esta tesis, presentamos una metodolog'a de dise-o que minimiza la p�rdida de prestaciones de la red debido a su implementaci-n real. Los principales problemas que se encuentran al implementar una NoC son los conmutadores y los enlaces largos. En esta tesis, el conmutador se ha hecho modular, es decir, formado como uni-n de m-dulos m�s peque-os. En nuestro caso, los m-dulos son id�nticos, donde cada m-dulo es capaz de arbitrar, conmutar, y almacenar los mensajes que le llegan. Posteriormente, flexibilizamos la colocaci-n de estos m-dulos en el chip, permitiendo que m-dulos de un mismo conmutador est�n distribuidos por el chip. Esta metodolog'a de dise-o la hemos aplicado a diferentes escenarios. Primeramente, hemos introducido nuestro conmutador modular en NoCs con topolog'as conocidas como la malla 2D. Los resultados muestran como la modularidad y la distribuci-n del conmutador reducen la latencia y el consumo de potencia de la red.     A Study of V2V Communication on VANET: Characteristic, Challenges and Research Trends

    Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) communication is a specific type of communication on Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET)  that attracts the great interest of researchers, industries, and government attention in due to its essential application to improve safety driving purposes for the next generation of vehicles. Our paper is a systematic study of V2V communication in VANET that cover the particular research issue, and trends from the recent works of literature. We begin the article with a brief V2V communication concept and the V2V application to safety purposes and non-safety purposes; then, we analyze several problems of V2V communication for VANET related to safety issues and non-safety issues. Next, we provide the trends of the V2V communication application for VANET. Finally, provide SWOT analysis as a discussion to identify opportunities and challenges of V2V communication for VANET in the future. The paper does not include a technical explanation. Still, the article describes the general perspective of VANET to the reader, especially for the beginner reader, who intends to learn about the topic
