    An ART1 microchip and its use in multi-ART1 systems

    Recently, a real-time clustering microchip neural engine based on the ART1 architecture has been reported. Such chip is able to cluster 100-b patterns into up to 18 categories at a speed of 1.8 μs per pattern. However, that chip rendered an extremely high silicon area consumption of 1 cm2, and consequently an extremely low yield of 6%. Redundant circuit techniques can be introduced to improve yield performance at the cost of further increasing chip size. In this paper we present an improved ART1 chip prototype based on a different approach to implement the most area consuming circuit elements of the first prototype: an array of several thousand current sources which have to match within a precision of around 1%. Such achievement was possible after a careful transistor mismatch characterization of the fabrication process (ES2-1.0 μm CMOS). A new prototype chip has been fabricated which can cluster 50-b input patterns into up to ten categories. The chip has 15 times less area, shows a yield performance of 98%, and presents the same precision and speed than the previous prototype. Due to its higher robustness multichip systems are easily assembled. As a demonstration we show results of a two-chip ART1 system, and of an ARTMAP system made of two ART1 chips and an extra interfacing chip

    A modular T-mode design approach for analog neural network hardware implementations

    A modular transconductance-mode (T-mode) design approach is presented for analog hardware implementations of neural networks. This design approach is used to build a modular bidirectional associative memory network. The authors show that the size of the whole system can be increased by interconnecting more modular chips. It is also shown that by changing the interconnection strategy different neural network systems can be implemented, such as a Hopfield network, a winner-take-all network, a simplified ART1 network, or a constrained optimization network. Presented at the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks (IJCNN), Brisbane, Australia.Axonal delays are used in neural computation to implement faithful models of biological neural systems, and in spiking neural networks models to solve computationally demanding tasks. While there is an increasing number of software simulations of spiking neural networks that make use of axonal delays, only a small fraction of currently existing hardware neuromorphic systems supports them. In this paper we demonstrate a strategy to implement temporal delays in hardware spiking neural networks distributed across multiple Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) chips. This is achieved by exploiting the inherent device mismatch present in the analog circuits that implement silicon neurons and synapses inside the chips, and the digital communication infrastructure used to configure the network topology and transmit the spikes across chips. We present an example of a recurrent VLSI spiking neural network that employs axonal delays and demonstrate how the proposed strategy efficiently implements them in hardware

    VLSI implementation of a transconductance mode continuous BAM with on chip learning and dynamic analog memory

    In this paper we present a complete VLSI Continuous-Time Bidirectional Associative Memory (BAM). The short term memory (STM) section is implemented using small transconductance four quadrant multipliers, and capacitors for the integrators. The long term memory (LTM) is built using an additional multiplier that uses locally available signals to perform Hebbian learning. The value of the learned weight is present at a capacitor for each synapse. After learning has been accomplished the value of the stored weight voltage can be refreshed using a simple AID-D/A conversion, which if done fast enough, will maintain the weight value within a discrete interval of the complete weight range. Such a discretization still allows good performance of the STM section after learning is finished

    A VLSI-design of the minimum entropy neuron

    One of the most interesting domains of feedforward networks is the processing of sensor signals. There do exist some networks which extract most of the information by implementing the maximum entropy principle for Gaussian sources. This is done by transforming input patterns to the base of eigenvectors of the input autocorrelation matrix with the biggest eigenvalues. The basic building block of these networks is the linear neuron, learning with the Oja learning rule. Nevertheless, some researchers in pattern recognition theory claim that for pattern recognition and classification clustering transformations are needed which reduce the intra-class entropy. This leads to stable, reliable features and is implemented for Gaussian sources by a linear transformation using the eigenvectors with the smallest eigenvalues. In another paper (Brause 1992) it is shown that the basic building block for such a transformation can be implemented by a linear neuron using an Anti-Hebb rule and restricted weights. This paper shows the analog VLSI design for such a building block, using standard modules of multiplication and addition. The most tedious problem in this VLSI-application is the design of an analog vector normalization circuitry. It can be shown that the standard approaches of weight summation will not give the convergence to the eigenvectors for a proper feature transformation. To avoid this problem, our design differs significantly from the standard approaches by computing the real Euclidean norm.     A modified ART 1 algorithm more suitable for VLSI implementations

    This paper presents a modification to the original ART 1 algorithm (Carpenter and Grossberg, 1987a, A massively parallel architecture for a self-organizing neural pattern recognition machine, Computer Vision, Graphics, and Image Processing, 37, 54–115) that is conceptually similar, can be implemented in hardware with less sophisticated building blocks, and maintains the computational capabilities of the originally proposed algorithm. This modified ART 1 algorithm (which we will call here ART 1m) is the result of hardware motivated simplifications investigated during the design of an actual ART 1 chip [Serrano-Gotarredona et al., 1994, Proc. 1994 IEEE Int. Conf. Neural Networks (Vol. 3, pp. 1912–1916); Serrano-Gotarredona and Linares-Barranco, 1996, IEEE Trans. VLSI Systems, (in press)]. The purpose of this paper is simply to justify theoretically that the modified algorithm preserves the computational properties of the original one and to study the difference in behavior between the two approaches

    A Circuit-Based Neural Network with Hybrid Learning of Backpropagation and Random Weight Change Algorithms.

    A hybrid learning method of a software-based backpropagation learning and a hardware-based RWC learning is proposed for the development of circuit-based neural networks. The backpropagation is known as one of the most efficient learning algorithms. A weak point is that its hardware implementation is extremely difficult. The RWC algorithm, which is very easy to implement with respect to its hardware circuits, takes too many iterations for learning. The proposed learning algorithm is a hybrid one of these two. The main learning is performed with a software version of the BP algorithm, firstly, and then, learned weights are transplanted on a hardware version of a neural circuit. At the time of the weight transplantation, a significant amount of output error would occur due to the characteristic difference between the software and the hardware. In the proposed method, such error is reduced via a complementary learning of the RWC algorithm, which is implemented in a simple hardware. The usefulness of the proposed hybrid learning system is verified via simulations upon several classical learning problems
