    Agents interoperability via conformance modulo mapping

    We present an algorithm for establishing a flexible conformance relation between two local agent interaction protocols (LAIPs) based on mappings involving agents and messages, respectively. Conformance is in fact computed "modulo mapping": two LAIPs \u3c4 and \u3c4 may involve different agents and use different syntax for messages, but may still be found to be conformant provided that a given map from entities appearing in \u3c4 to corresponding entities in \u3c4 is applied. LAIPs are modelled as trace expressions whose high expressive power allows for the design of protocols that could not be specified using finite state automata or equivalent formalisms. This expressive power makes the problem of stating if \u3c4 conforms to \u3c4 undecidable. We cope with this problem by over-approximating trace expressions that may lead to infinite computations, obtaining a sound but not complete implementation of the proposed conformance check

    The Trace Expression formalism derives from works started in 2012 and is mainly used to specify and verify interaction protocols at runtime, but other applications have been devised. More specically, this thesis describes how to extend and apply such formalism in the engineering process of distributed articial intelligence systems (such as Multiagent systems). This thesis extends the state of the art through four dierent contributions: 1. Theoretical: the thesis extends the original formalism in order to represent also parametric and probabilistic specications (parametric trace expressions and probabilistic trace expressions respectively). 2. Algorithmic: the thesis proposes algorithms for verifying trace expressions at runtime in a decentralized way. The algorithms have been designed to be as general as possible, but their implementation and experimentation address scenarios where the modelled and observed events are communicative events (interactions) inside a multiagent system. 3. Application: the thesis analyzes the relations between runtime and static verication (e.g. model checking) proposing hybrid integrations in both directions. First of all, the thesis proposes a trace expression model checking approach where it shows how to statically verify LTL property on a trace expression specication. After that, the thesis presents a novel approach for supporting static verication through the addition of monitors at runtime (post-process). 4. Implementation: the thesis presents RIVERtools, a tool supporting the writing, the syntactic analysis and the decentralization of trace expressions

The idea behind the Workshop arose from the experience and feedback of ISoLA 2004, the 1st International Symposium on Leveraging Applications of Formal Methods held in Paphos (Cyprus) last October-November.     Conceptualisation of rights and meta-rule of law for the web of data

Data and metadata are defined. Digital Rights Management (DRM) and Rights Expression Languages (REL) are introduced. Open Digital Rights Language (ODRL), Licensed Linked Data Resources (LLDR) and Creative Commons Licenses are referred. The development of REL by means of Ontology Design Patterns such as LLDR, or Open Licenses sustained by Policy Models such as ODRL, situates the discussion on metadata at the regulatory level. With the development of the Web of Data the Rule of Law needs to evolve to a Meta-Rule of Law, incorporating tools to regulate and monitor the semantic layer of the Web. This means reflecting on the construction of a new public dimension space for the exercise of rights

    OBSAI interoperability in multi-vendor WiMAX base station architecture

    Wireless networks have become a necessity with the increased mobility in human life. From cellular telephony to the Internet, all types of communication are now provided over wireless networks. However, to offer wireless network coverage over an area requires a potentially expensive infrastructure deployment. Such deployment requires base stations which until now have been completely proprietary to the equipment vendors. Moreover, proprietary equipment is almost always costly and offer less flexibility than standardized modular solutions. This situation results in a high cost for network upgradation and hinders network development. A remedy is available via modularization, hence the Open Base Station Architecture Initiative (OBSAI) is trying to modularize and standardize one of the most expensive elements of the wireless infrastructure, the base station. OBSAI standards aim to modularize the base station architecture and enable true interoperability among the various modules. However, the goal has not yet been achieved due to some features of the standard. This thesis project has studied the standards and pointed out some areas that must be concentrated upon when performing interoperability tests. It also proposes several standards amendments to foster greater interoperability among the modules of a base station. This study focuses on the RP3 interface of the OBSAI specification with the goal of making truly inter-operable baseband and RF modules, thus commoditizing the modules. The result is expected to be lower cost, greater interoperability, faster time-to-market, and more cooperative research

    Open biomedical pluralism : formalising knowledge about breast cancer phenotypes

    We demonstrate a heterogeneity of representation types for breast cancer phenotypes and stress that the characterisation of a tumour phenotype often includes parameters that go beyond the representation of a corresponding empirically observed tumour, thus reflecting significant functional features of the phenotypes as well as epistemic interests that drive the modes of representation. Accordingly, the represented features of cancer phenotypes function as epistemic vehicles aiding various classifications, explanations, and predictions. In order to clarify how the plurality of epistemic motivations can be integrated on a formal level, we give a distinction between six categories of human agents as individuals and groups focused around particular epistemic interests. We analyse the corresponding impact of these groups and individuals on representation types, mapping and reasoning scenarios. Respecting the plurality of representations, related formalisms, expressivities and aims, as they are found across diverse scientific communities, we argue for a pluralistic ontology integration. Moreover, we discuss and illustrate to what extent such a pluralistic integration is supported by the distributed ontology language DOL, a meta-language for heterogeneous ontology representation that is currently under standardisation as ISO WD 17347 within the OntoIOp (Ontology Integration and Interoperability) activity of ISO/TC 37/SC 3. We particularly illustrate how DOL supports representations of parthood on various levels of logical expressivity, mapping of terms, merging of ontologies, as well as non-monotonic extensions based on circumscription allowing a transparent formal modelling of the normal/abnormal distinction in phenotypes
