Development of Novel Compound Controllers to Reduce Chattering of Sliding Mode Control

    Get PDF
The robotics and dynamic systems constantly encountered with disturbances such as micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) gyroscope under disturbances result in mechanical coupling terms between two axes, friction forces in exoskeleton robot joints, and unmodelled dynamics of robot manipulator. Sliding mode control (SMC) is a robust controller. The main drawback of the sliding mode controller is that it produces high-frequency control signals, which leads to chattering. The research objective is to reduce chattering, improve robustness, and increase trajectory tracking of SMC. In this research, we developed controllers for three different dynamic systems: (i) MEMS, (ii) an Exoskeleton type robot, and (iii) a 2 DOF robot manipulator. We proposed three sliding mode control methods such as robust sliding mode control (RSMC), new sliding mode control (NSMC), and fractional sliding mode control (FSMC). These controllers were applied on MEMS gyroscope, Exoskeleton robot, and robot manipulator. The performance of the three proposed sliding mode controllers was compared with conventional sliding mode control (CSMC). The simulation results verified that FSMC exhibits better performance in chattering reduction, faster convergence, finite-time convergence, robustness, and trajectory tracking compared to RSMC, CSMC, and NSFC. Also, the tracking performance of NSMC was compared with CSMC experimentally, which demonstrated better performance of the NSMC controller

A review of convex approaches for control, observation and safety of linear parameter varying and Takagi-Sugeno systems

    Get PDF
This paper provides a review about the concept of convex systems based on Takagi-Sugeno, linear parameter varying (LPV) and quasi-LPV modeling. These paradigms are capable of hiding the nonlinearities by means of an equivalent description which uses a set of linear models interpolated by appropriately defined weighing functions. Convex systems have become very popular since they allow applying extended linear techniques based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to complex nonlinear systems. This survey aims at providing the reader with a significant overview of the existing LMI-based techniques for convex systems in the fields of control, observation and safety. Firstly, a detailed review of stability, feedback, tracking and model predictive control (MPC) convex controllers is considered. Secondly, the problem of state estimation is addressed through the design of proportional, proportional-integral, unknown input and descriptor observers. Finally, safety of convex systems is discussed by describing popular techniques for fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control (FTC).Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Review of sliding mode control application in autonomous underwater vehicles

973-984This paper presents a review of sliding mode control for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). The AUVs are used under water operating in the presence of uncertainties (due to hydrodynamics coefficients) and external disturbances (due to water currents, waves, etc.). Sliding mode controller is one of the nonlinear robust controllers which is robust towards uncertainties, parameter variations and external disturbances. The evolution of sliding mode control in motion control studies of autonomous underwater vehicles is summarized throughout for the last three decades. The performance of the controller is examined based on the chattering reduction, accuracy (steady state error reduction), and robustness against perturbation. The review on sliding mode control for AUVs provides insights for readers to design new techniques and algorithms, to enhance the existing family of sliding mode control strategies into a new one or to merge and re-supervise the control techniques with other control strategies, in which, the aim is to obtain good controller design for AUVs in terms of great performance, stability and robustness

Disturbance observer based sliding mode control for a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR)

    Get PDF
A continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) is typical of equipment found in the process control industry. The dynamics represent a wide class of second order nonlinear systems and thus as well as having specific industrial application, control of the CSTR is frequently used as a benchmark problem for application and testing of new control algorithms. Due to the high complexity of the CSTR system, the robust control design problem is challenging. This paper first establishes a mathematical model of the system. A disturbance observer is then designed to estimate the disturbance and a corresponding asymptotically stable sliding mode control is developed. Stability analysis is presented in terms of the Lyapunov method. Finally, based on experimental data, the proposed method is validated using simulation experiments

Purpose. This paper presents an advanced control scheme based on fuzzy logic and second order sliding mode of a unified power flow controller. This controller offers advantages in terms of static and dynamic operation of the power system such as the control law is synthesized using three types of controllers: proportional integral, and sliding mode controller and Fuzzy logic second order sliding mode controller. Their respective performances are compared in terms of reference tracking, sensitivity to perturbations and robustness. We have to study the problem of controlling power in electric system by UPFC. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method especiallyin chattering-free behavior, response to sudden load variations and robustness. All the simulations for the above work have been carried out using MATLAB / Simulink. Various simulations have given very satisfactory results and we have successfully improved the real and reactive power flows on a transmission lineas well as to regulate voltage at the bus where it is connected, the studies and illustrate the effectiveness and capability of UPFC in improving power.

Fuzzy Sliding Mode Observer with Grey Prediction for the Estimation of the State-of-Charge of a Lithium-Ion Battery

    Get PDF
We propose a state-of-charge (SOC) estimation method for Li-ion batteries that combines a fuzzy sliding mode observer (FSMO) with grey prediction. Unlike the existing methods based on a conventional first-order sliding mode observer (SMO) and an adaptive gain SMO, the proposed method eliminates chattering in SOC estimation. In this method, which uses a fuzzy inference system, the gains of the SMO are adjusted according to the predicted future error and present estimation error of the terminal voltage. To forecast the future error value, a one-step-ahead terminal voltage prediction is obtained using a grey predictor. The proposed estimation method is validated through two types of discharge tests (a pulse discharge test and a random discharge test). The SOC estimation results are compared to the results of the conventional first-order SMO-based and the adaptive gain SMO-based methods. The experimental results show that the proposed method not only reduces chattering, but also improves estimation accuracy.11111Ysciescopu
