    The final purpose of any scientific discipline can be regarded as the solution of real-world problems. With this aim, a mathematical modeling of the considered phenomenon is often compulsory. Closed-form solutions of the arising functional equations are usually not available and numerical discretization techniques are required. In this setting, the discretization of an infinite-dimensional linear equation via some linear approximation method, leads to a sequence of linear systems of increasing dimension whose coefficient matrices could inherit a structure from the continuous problem. For instance, the numerical approximation by local methods of constant or nonconstant coefficients systems of Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) over multidimensional domains, gives rise to multilevel block Toeplitz or to Generalized Locally Toeplitz (GLT) sequences, respectively. In the context of structured matrices, the convergence properties of iterative methods, like multigrid or preconditioned Krylov techniques, are strictly related to the notion of symbol, a function whose role relies in describing the asymptotical distribution of the spectrum. This thesis can be seen as a byproduct of the combined use of powerful tools like symbol, spectral distribution, and GLT, when dealing with the numerical solution of structured linear systems. We approach such an issue both from a theoretical and practical viewpoint. On the one hand, we enlarge some known spectral distribution tools by proving the eigenvalue distribution of matrix-sequences obtained as combination of some algebraic operations on multilevel block Toeplitz matrices. On the other hand, we take advantage of the obtained results for designing efficient preconditioning techniques. Moreover, we focus on the numerical solution of structured linear systems coming from the following applications: image deblurring, fractional diffusion equations, and coupled PDEs. A spectral analysis of the arising structured sequences allows us either to study the convergence and predict the behavior of preconditioned Krylov and multigrid methods applied to the coefficient matrices, or to design effective preconditioners and multigrid solvers for the associated linear systems

    An efficient iterative method based on two-stage splitting methods to solve weakly nonlinear systems

    [EN] In this paper, an iterative method for solving large, sparse systems of weakly nonlinear equations is presented. This method is based on Hermitian/skew-Hermitian splitting (HSS) scheme. Under suitable assumptions, we establish the convergence theorem for this method. In addition, it is shown that any faster and less time-consuming two-stage splitting method that satisfies the convergence theorem can be replaced instead of the HSS inner iterations. Numerical results, such as CPU time, show the robustness of our new method.     Preconditioned fast solvers for large linear systems with specific sparse and/or Toeplitz-like structures and applications

    In this thesis, the design of the preconditioners we propose starts from applications instead of treating the problem in a completely general way. The reason is that not all types of linear systems can be addressed with the same tools. In this sense, the techniques for designing efficient iterative solvers depends mostly on properties inherited from the continuous problem, that has originated the discretized sequence of matrices. Classical examples are locality, isotropy in the PDE context, whose discrete counterparts are sparsity and matrices constant along the diagonals, respectively. Therefore, it is often important to take into account the properties of the originating continuous model for obtaining better performances and for providing an accurate convergence analysis. We consider linear systems that arise in the solution of both linear and nonlinear partial differential equation of both integer and fractional type. For the latter case, an introduction to both the theory and the numerical treatment is given. All the algorithms and the strategies presented in this thesis are developed having in mind their parallel implementation. In particular, we consider the processor-co-processor framework, in which the main part of the computation is performed on a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) accelerator. In Part I we introduce our proposal for sparse approximate inverse preconditioners for either the solution of time-dependent Partial Differential Equations (PDEs), Chapter 3, and Fractional Differential Equations (FDEs), containing both classical and fractional terms, Chapter 5. More precisely, we propose a new technique for updating preconditioners for dealing with sequences of linear systems for PDEs and FDEs, that can be used also to compute matrix functions of large matrices via quadrature formula in Chapter 4 and for optimal control of FDEs in Chapter 6. At last, in Part II, we consider structured preconditioners for quasi-Toeplitz systems. The focus is towards the numerical treatment of discretized convection-diffusion equations in Chapter 7 and on the solution of FDEs with linear multistep formula in boundary value form in Chapter 8

    GMRES-Accelerated ADMM for Quadratic Objectives

    We consider the sequence acceleration problem for the alternating direction method-of-multipliers (ADMM) applied to a class of equality-constrained problems with strongly convex quadratic objectives, which frequently arise as the Newton subproblem of interior-point methods. Within this context, the ADMM update equations are linear, the iterates are confined within a Krylov subspace, and the General Minimum RESidual (GMRES) algorithm is optimal in its ability to accelerate convergence. The basic ADMM method solves a κ\kappa-conditioned problem in O(κ)O(\sqrt{\kappa}) iterations. We give theoretical justification and numerical evidence that the GMRES-accelerated variant consistently solves the same problem in O(κ1/4)O(\kappa^{1/4}) iterations for an order-of-magnitude reduction in iterations, despite a worst-case bound of O(κ)O(\sqrt{\kappa}) iterations. The method is shown to be competitive against standard preconditioned Krylov subspace methods for saddle-point problems. The method is embedded within SeDuMi, a popular open-source solver for conic optimization written in MATLAB, and used to solve many large-scale semidefinite programs with error that decreases like O(1/k2)O(1/k^{2}), instead of O(1/k)O(1/k), where kk is the iteration index.Comment: 31 pages, 7 figures.     The Cayley transform method is a Newton-like method for solving in- verse eigenvalue problems. If the problem is large, one can solve the Ja- cobian equation by iterative methods. However, iterative methods usually oversolve the problem in the sense that they require far more (inner) it- erations than is required for the convergence of the Newton (outer) itera- tions. In this paper, we develop an inexact version of the Cayley transform method. Our method can reduce the oversolving problem and improves the e±ciency with respect to the exact version. We show that the convergence rate of our method is superlinear and that a good tradeo® between the required inner and outer iterations can be obtained

    Accelerated Circulant and Skew Circulant Splitting Methods for Hermitian Positive Definite Toeplitz Systems

    We study the CSCS method for large Hermitian positive definite Toeplitz linear systems, which first appears in Ng's paper published in (Ng, 2003), and CSCS stands for circulant and skew circulant splitting of the coefficient matrix . In this paper, we present a new iteration method for the numerical solution of Hermitian positive definite Toeplitz systems of linear equations. The method is a two-parameter generation of the CSCS method such that when the two parameters involved are equal, it coincides with the CSCS method. We discuss the convergence property and optimal parameters of this method. Finally, we extend our method to BTTB matrices. Numerical experiments are presented to show the effectiveness of our new method

    Stability theory and hamiltonian dynamics in the Euler ideal fluid equations

    The study of shear flow steady states has led to a wealth of research in the field of fluid dynamics. By studying shear flows, we can understand how a fluid behaves and how coherent structures arise. We primarily study the stability of shear flows in the Euler equations. The Euler equations describe the dynamics of an ideal fluid which is incompressible, inviscid, and experiences no external forces. We study the family of shear flows of the Euler equations with vorticity of the form Ω(x,y)=cos(κxpxx+κypyy) on a two-dimensional periodic domain of size [0,2π/κx)×[0,2π/κy), and formulate this as a Poisson system. We prove that if py=0 and κx|px|(3+2×31/2 )/2, we prove the flow is nonlinearly unstable. We discuss the full spectrum of the linearisation of shear flows and a related Jacobi problem. We prove analogous stability results in a known Poisson structure preserving truncation and discuss the qualitative differences. We extend a previously known Poisson integrator for this truncation of the Euler equations to a general two-dimensional periodic domain. The Euler equations on a three-dimensional periodic domain are less well-understood. In this domain we formulate the dynamics in terms of the vorticity Fourier modes. This is then used to study shear flows and prove similar stability results as for the two-dimensional case. The linearised equations split into subsystems which have equivalent dynamics to those of the two-dimensional subsystems. We prove the existence of a family of linearly stable shear flows, and another of linearly unstable shear flows. For a dense set of parameter values, the linearised system has a nilpotent part. This is linked to nonnormality and indicates a transition to turbulence. We formulate the Euler equations on a three-dimensional periodic domain as a Poisson system. We finally present some numerical results demonstrating and exploring the results of this thesis

    Explicit alternating direction methods for problems in fluid dynamics

    Recently an iterative method was formulated employing a new splitting strategy for the solution of tridiagonal systems of difference equations. The method was successful in solving the systems of equations arising from one dimensional initial boundary value problems, and a theoretical analysis for proving the convergence of the method for systems whose constituent matrices are positive definite was presented by Evans and Sahimi [22]. The method was known as the Alternating Group Explicit (AGE) method and is referred to as AGE-1D. The explicit nature of the method meant that its implementation on parallel machines can be very promising. The method was also extended to solve systems arising from two and three dimensional initial-boundary value problems, but the AGE-2D and AGE-3D algorithms proved to be too demanding in computational cost which largely reduces the advantages of its parallel nature. In this thesis, further theoretical analyses and experimental studies are pursued to establish the convergence and suitability of the AGE-1D method to a wider class of systems arising from univariate and multivariate differential equations with symmetric and non symmetric difference operators. Also the possibility of a Chebyshev acceleration of the AGE-1D algorithm is considered. For two and three dimensional problems it is proposed to couple the use of the AGE-1D algorithm with an ADI scheme or an ADI iterative method in what is called the Explicit Alternating Direction (EAD) method. It is then shown through experimental results that the EAD method retains the parallel features of the AGE method and moreover leads to savings of up to 83 % in the computational cost for solving some of the model problems. The thesis also includes applications of the AGE-1D algorithm and the EAD method to solve some problems of fluid dynamics such as the linearized Shallow Water equations, and the Navier Stokes' equations for the flow in an idealized one dimensional Planetary Boundary Layer. The thesis terminates with conclusions and suggestions for further work together with a comprehensive bibliography and an appendix containing some selected programs
