Message passing for vertex covers
Constructing a minimal vertex cover of a graph can be seen as a prototype for
a combinatorial optimization problem under hard constraints. In this paper, we
develop and analyze message passing techniques, namely warning and survey
propagation, which serve as efficient heuristic algorithms for solving these
computational hard problems. We show also, how previously obtained results on
the typical-case behavior of vertex covers of random graphs can be recovered

On green routing and scheduling problem
The vehicle routing and scheduling problem has been studied with much
interest within the last four decades. In this paper, some of the existing
literature dealing with routing and scheduling problems with environmental
issues is reviewed, and a description is provided of the problems that have
been investigated and how they are treated using combinatorial optimization

Local search: A guide for the information retrieval practitioner
There are a number of combinatorial optimisation problems in information retrieval in which the use of local search methods are worthwhile. The purpose of this paper is to show how local search can be used to solve some well known tasks in information retrieval (IR), how previous research in the field is piecemeal, bereft of a structure and methodologically flawed, and to suggest more rigorous ways of applying local search methods to solve IR problems. We provide a query based taxonomy for analysing the use of local search in IR tasks and an overview of issues such as fitness functions, statistical significance and test collections when conducting experiments on combinatorial optimisation problems. The paper gives a guide on the pitfalls and problems for IR practitioners who wish to use local search to solve their research issues, and gives practical advice on the use of such methods. Search-based 3D Planning and Trajectory Optimization for Safe Micro Aerial Vehicle Flight Under Sensor Visibility Constraints
Safe navigation of Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) requires not only
obstacle-free flight paths according to a static environment map, but also the
perception of and reaction to previously unknown and dynamic objects. This
implies that the onboard sensors cover the current flight direction. Due to the
limited payload of MAVs, full sensor coverage of the environment has to be
traded off with flight time. Thus, often only a part of the environment is
covered.
We present a combined allocentric complete planning and trajectory
optimization approach taking these sensor visibility constraints into account.
The optimized trajectories yield flight paths within the apex angle of a
Velodyne Puck Lite 3D laser scanner enabling low-level collision avoidance to
perceive obstacles in the flight direction. Furthermore, the optimized
trajectories take the flight dynamics into account and contain the velocities
and accelerations along the path.
We evaluate our approach with a DJI Matrice 600 MAV and in simulation

A Component Based Heuristic Search Method with Evolutionary Eliminations
Nurse rostering is a complex scheduling problem that affects hospital
personnel on a daily basis all over the world. This paper presents a new
component-based approach with evolutionary eliminations, for a nurse scheduling
problem arising at a major UK hospital. The main idea behind this technique is
to decompose a schedule into its components (i.e. the allocated shift pattern
of each nurse), and then to implement two evolutionary elimination strategies
mimicking natural selection and natural mutation process on these components
respectively to iteratively deliver better schedules. The worthiness of all
components in the schedule has to be continuously demonstrated in order for
them to remain there. This demonstration employs an evaluation function which
evaluates how well each component contributes towards the final objective. Two
elimination steps are then applied: the first elimination eliminates a number
of components that are deemed not worthy to stay in the current schedule; the
second elimination may also throw out, with a low level of probability, some
worthy components. The eliminated components are replenished with new ones
using a set of constructive heuristics using local optimality criteria.
Computational results using 52 data instances demonstrate the applicability of
the proposed approach in solving real-world problems.Comment: 27 pages, 4 figure
Comparison of heuristic approaches for the multiple depot vehicle scheduling problem
Given a set of timetabled tasks, the multi-depot vehicle scheduling problemis a well-known problem that consists of determining least-cost schedulesfor vehicles assigned to several depots such that each task is accomplishedexactly once by a vehicle. In this paper, we propose to compare theperformance of five different heuristic approaches for this problem,namely, a heuristic \\mip solver, a Lagrangian heuristic, a columngeneration heuristic, a large neighborhood search heuristic using columngeneration for neighborhood evaluation, and a tabu search heuristic. Thefirst three methods are adaptations of existing methods, while the last twoare novel approaches for this problem. Computational results on randomlygenerated instances show that the column generation heuristic performs thebest when enough computational time is available and stability is required,while the large neighborhood search method is the best alternative whenlooking for a compromise between computational time and solution quality.tabu search;column generation;vehicle scheduling;heuristics;Lagrangian heuristic;large neighborhood search;multiple depot
