One-Class Classification: Taxonomy of Study and Review of Techniques
One-class classification (OCC) algorithms aim to build classification models
when the negative class is either absent, poorly sampled or not well defined.
This unique situation constrains the learning of efficient classifiers by
defining class boundary just with the knowledge of positive class. The OCC
problem has been considered and applied under many research themes, such as
outlier/novelty detection and concept learning. In this paper we present a
unified view of the general problem of OCC by presenting a taxonomy of study
for OCC problems, which is based on the availability of training data,
algorithms used and the application domains applied. We further delve into each
of the categories of the proposed taxonomy and present a comprehensive
literature review of the OCC algorithms, techniques and methodologies with a
focus on their significance, limitations and applications. We conclude our
paper by discussing some open research problems in the field of OCC and present
our vision for future research.Comment: 24 pages + 11 pages of references, 8 figure
Recognition-based Approach of Numeral Extraction in Handwritten Chemistry Documents using Contextual Knowledge
International audienceThis paper presents a complete procedure that uses contextual and syntactic information to identify and recognize amount fields in the table regions of chemistry documents. The proposed method is composed of two main modules. Firstly, a structural analysis based on connected component (CC) dimensions and positions identifies some special symbols and clusters other CCs into three groups: fragment of characters, isolated characters or connected characters. Then, a specific processing is performed on each group of CCs. The fragment of characters are merged with the nearest character or string using geometric relationship based rules. The characters are sent to a recognition module to identify the numeral components. For the connected characters, the final decision on the string nature (numeric or non-numeric) is made based on a global score computed on the full string using the height regularity property and the recognition probabilities of its segmented fragments. Finally, a simple syntactic verification at table row level is conducted in order to correct eventual errors. The experimental tests are carried out on real-world chemistry documents provided by our industrial partner eNovalys. The obtained results show the effectiveness of the proposed system in extracting amount fields
Handgrip pattern recognition
There are numerous tragic gun deaths each year. Making handguns safer by personalizing them could prevent most such tragedies. Personalized handguns, also called smart guns, are handguns that can only be fired by the authorized user. Handgrip pattern recognition holds great promise in the development of the smart gun.
Two algorithms, static analysis algorithm and dynamic analysis algorithm, were developed to find the patterns of a person about how to grasp a handgun. The static analysis algorithm measured 160 subjects\u27 fingertip placements on the replica gun handle. The cluster analysis and discriminant analysis were applied to these fingertip placements, and a classification tree was built to find the fingertip pattern for each subject.
The dynamic analysis algorithm collected and measured 24 subjects\u27 handgrip pressure waveforms during the trigger pulling stage. A handgrip recognition algorithm was developed to find the correct pattern. A DSP box was built to make the handgrip pattern recognition to be done in real time. A real gun was used to evaluate the handgrip recognition algorithm. The result was shown and it proves that such a handgrip recognition system works well as a prototype
Graph matching using position coordinates and local features for image analysis

Sketch recognition of digital ink diagrams : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand
Figures are either re-used with permission, or abstracted with permission from the source article.Sketch recognition of digital ink diagrams is the process of automatically identifying hand-drawn elements in a diagram. This research focuses on the simultaneous grouping and recognition of shapes in digital ink diagrams. In order to recognise a shape, we need to group strokes belonging to a shape, however, strokes cannot be grouped until the shape is identified. Therefore, we treat grouping and recognition as a simultaneous task.
Our grouping technique uses spatial proximity to hypothesise shape candidates. Many of the hypothesised shape candidates are invalid, therefore we need a way to reject them. We present a novel rejection technique based on novelty detection. The rejection method uses proximity measures to validate a shape candidate. In addition, we investigate on improving the accuracy of the current shape recogniser by adding extra features. We also present a novel connector recognition system that localises connector heads around recognised shapes.
We perform a full comparative study on two datasets. The results show that our approach is significantly more accurate in finding shapes and faster on process diagram compared to Stahovich et al. (2014), which the results show the superiority of our approach in terms of computation time and accuracy. Furthermore, we evaluate our system on two public datasets and compare our results with other approaches reported in the literature that have used these dataset. The results show that our approach is
more accurate in finding and recognising the shapes in the FC dataset (by finding and
recognising 91.7% of the shapes) compared to the reported results in the literature
A study of the effects of ageing on the characteristics of handwriting and signatures
The work presented in this thesis is focused on the understanding of factors that are unique to the elderly and their use of biometric systems. In particular, an investigation is carried out with a focus on the handwritten signature as the biometric modality of choice. This followed on from an in-depth analysis of various biometric modalities such as voice, fingerprint and face. This analysis aimed at investigating the inclusivity of and the policy guiding the use of biometrics by the elderly. Knowledge gained from extracted features of the handwritten signatures of the elderly shed more light on and exposed the uniqueness of some of these features in their ability to separate the elderly from the young. Consideration is also given to a comparative analysis of another handwriting task, that of copying text both in cursive and block capitals. It was discovered that there are features that are unique to each task. Insight into the human perceptual capability in inspecting signatures, in assessing complexity and in judging imitations was gained by analysing responses to practical scenarios that applied human perceptual judgement. Features extracted from a newly created database containing handwritten signatures donated by elderly subjects allowed the possibility of analysing the intra-class variations that exist within the elderly population
Diverse Contributions to Implicit Human-Computer Interaction
interacciones implícitas no proporcionan datos claros y concretos.
Leiva Torres, LA. (2012). Diverse Contributions to Implicit Human-Computer Interaction [Tesis doctoral no publicada]. Universitat Politècnica de València. https://doi.org/10.4995/Thesis/10251/17803Palanci
