In a competitive business environment, retail organizations in the Western world are capitalizing on technological tools and solutions to enhance customer experience and boost sales. Specifically, retailers that adopt Internet of Things (IoT) technologies improve customer experience and achieve cost savings. Yet such innovation is rare outside the Western world. Hence, early adopters of IoT technologies in retail operations in Pakistan could gain a competitive advantage. This study aims to create a deeper understanding of how Pakistan-based Canteen Stores Department (CSD), a retail chain mainly serving service members and their families, can use IoT technologies to significantly modernize and improve its operations and distinguish itself from competitors. To do so, this study conducts a qualitative analysis of scholarly articles on the relevant technologies and on IoT-based products offered by commercial companies. The authors also include findings from discussions with CSD customers and management. The results of the study indicate CSD can use IoT technologies to optimize store layout, offer interactive in-store mapping, automate checkout systems, implement smart shelving and digital price tagging, improve in-store promotions, enhance customer relationship management, and modernize distribution, transportation, and warehousing. The study also offers CSD management guidance on how to implement IoT technologies into retail operations at one location as a pilot.Outstanding ThesisLieutenant Commander, Pakistan NavyWing Commander, Pakistan Air ForceLieutenant Colonel, Pakistan ArmyApproved for public release. This research service provides an original perspective on how artificial intelligence (AI) is making its way into the retail sector. Retail has entered a new era where ECommerce and technology bellwethers like Alibaba, Amazon, Apple, Baidu, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Tencent have raised consumers’ expectations. AI is enabling automated decision-making with accuracy and speed, based on data analytics, coupled with self- learning abilities. The retail sector has witnessed the dramatic evolution with the rapid digitalization of communication (i.e. Internet) and; smart phones and devices. Customer is no longer the same as they became more empowered by smart devices which has entirely prevailed their expectation, habits, style of shopping and investigating the shops. This article outlines the Significant innovation done in retails which helped them to evolve such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big data and Internet of Things (IoT), Chatbots, Robots. This article further also discusses the ideology of various author on how AI become more profitable and a close asset to customers and retailers

Augmented Reality: Emergent Applications and Opportunities for Industry 4.0

    Get PDF
As the industry evolves further into digitalization, companies grow interested in new solutions made possible by the technologies of the Industry 4.0. One such paradigm is that of Augmented Reality (AR), which has seen significant growth in recent years, but still with great room for improvement, and still with many people unaware of its potential benefits. In its implementations, AR has generated value across a wide range of applications that aim at reducing the frequency of human error, decreasing the training time of professionals, and improving workflow. The purpose of this study is to understand the existing uses of AR across different fields, including its current state-of-the-art applications in the industrial sector, and find ways in which its systems in production lines could be improved, with a focus on the interaction between the user and the system, presenting a series of proposed solutions. To conclude, possible opportunities that could aid industry professionals and operators of manufacturing systems supported by AR are presented and discussed

Review: Development and technical design of tangible user interfaces in wide-field areas of application

    Get PDF
A tangible user interface or TUI connects physical objects and digital interfaces. It is more interactive and interesting for users than a classic graphic user interface. This article presents a descriptive overview of TUI's real-world applications sorted into ten main application areas-teaching of traditional subjects, medicine and psychology, programming, database development, music and arts, modeling of 3D objects, modeling in architecture, literature and storytelling, adjustable TUI solutions, and commercial TUI smart toys. The paper focuses on TUI's technical solutions and a description of technical constructions that influences the applicability of TUIs in the real world. Based on the review, the technical concept was divided into two main approaches: the sensory technical concept and technology based on a computer vision algorithm. The sensory technical concept is processed to use wireless technology, sensors, and feedback possibilities in TUI applications. The image processing approach is processed to a marker and markerless approach for object recognition, the use of cameras, and the use of computer vision platforms for TUI applications.Web of Science2113art. no. 425
