    Hardware-based smart camera for recovering high dynamic range video from multiple exposures

    International audienceIn many applications such as video surveillance or defect detection, the perception of information related to a scene is limited in areas with strong contrasts. The high dynamic range (HDR) capture technique can deal with these limitations. The proposed method has the advantage of automatically selecting multiple exposure times to make outputs more visible than fixed exposure ones. A real-time hardware implementation of the HDR technique that shows more details both in dark and bright areas of a scene is an important line of research. For this purpose, we built a dedicated smart camera that performs both capturing and HDR video processing from three exposures. What is new in our work is shown through the following points: HDR video capture through multiple exposure control, HDR memory management, HDR frame generation, and rep- resentation under a hardware context. Our camera achieves a real-time HDR video output at 60 fps at 1.3 mega- pixels and demonstrates the efficiency of our technique through an experimental result.     LAN-HDR: Luminance-based Alignment Network for High Dynamic Range Video Reconstruction

    As demands for high-quality videos continue to rise, high-resolution and high-dynamic range (HDR) imaging techniques are drawing attention. To generate an HDR video from low dynamic range (LDR) images, one of the critical steps is the motion compensation between LDR frames, for which most existing works employed the optical flow algorithm. However, these methods suffer from flow estimation errors when saturation or complicated motions exist. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end HDR video composition framework, which aligns LDR frames in the feature space and then merges aligned features into an HDR frame, without relying on pixel-domain optical flow. Specifically, we propose a luminance-based alignment network for HDR (LAN-HDR) consisting of an alignment module and a hallucination module. The alignment module aligns a frame to the adjacent reference by evaluating luminance-based attention, excluding color information. The hallucination module generates sharp details, especially for washed-out areas due to saturation. The aligned and hallucinated features are then blended adaptively to complement each other. Finally, we merge the features to generate a final HDR frame. In training, we adopt a temporal loss, in addition to frame reconstruction losses, to enhance temporal consistency and thus reduce flickering. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method performs better or comparable to state-of-the-art methods on several benchmarks.Comment: ICCV 202

    One-Shot HDR Imaging via Stereo PFA Cameras

    High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging techniques aim to increase the range of luminance values captured from a scene. The literature counts many approaches to get HDR images out of low-range camera sensors, however most of them rely on multiple acquisitions producing ghosting effects when moving objects are present. In this paper we propose a novel HDR reconstruction method exploiting stereo Polarimetric Filter Array (PFA) cameras to simultaneously capture the scene with different polarized filters, producing intensity attenuations that can be related to the light polarization state. An additional linear polarizer is mounted in front of one of the two cameras, raising the degree of polarization of rays captured by the sensor. This leads to a larger attenuation range between channels regardless the scene lighting condition. By merging the data acquired by the two cameras, we can compute the actual light attenuation observed by a pixel at each channel and derive an equivalent exposure time, producing a HDR picture from a single polarimetric shot. The proposed technique results comparable to classic HDR approaches using multiple exposures, with the advantage of being a one-shot method

    Variational image fusion

    The main goal of this work is the fusion of multiple images to a single composite that offers more information than the individual input images. We approach those fusion tasks within a variational framework. First, we present iterative schemes that are well-suited for such variational problems and related tasks. They lead to efficient algorithms that are simple to implement and well-parallelisable. Next, we design a general fusion technique that aims for an image with optimal local contrast. This is the key for a versatile method that performs well in many application areas such as multispectral imaging, decolourisation, and exposure fusion. To handle motion within an exposure set, we present the following two-step approach: First, we introduce the complete rank transform to design an optic flow approach that is robust against severe illumination changes. Second, we eliminate remaining misalignments by means of brightness transfer functions that relate the brightness values between frames. Additional knowledge about the exposure set enables us to propose the first fully coupled method that jointly computes an aligned high dynamic range image and dense displacement fields. Finally, we present a technique that infers depth information from differently focused images. In this context, we additionally introduce a novel second order regulariser that adapts to the image structure in an anisotropic way.Das Hauptziel dieser Arbeit ist die Fusion mehrerer Bilder zu einem Einzelbild, das mehr Informationen bietet als die einzelnen Eingangsbilder. Wir verwirklichen diese Fusionsaufgaben in einem variationellen Rahmen. Zunächst präsentieren wir iterative Schemata, die sich gut für solche variationellen Probleme und verwandte Aufgaben eignen. Danach entwerfen wir eine Fusionstechnik, die ein Bild mit optimalem lokalen Kontrast anstrebt.     Despite the emergence of new HDR acquisition methods, the multiple exposure technique (MET) is still the most popular one. The application of MET on dynamic scenes is a challenging task due to the diversity of motion patterns and uncontrollable factors such as sensor noise, scene occlusion and performance concerns on some platforms with limited computational capability. Currently, there are already more than 50 deghosting algorithms proposed for artifact-free HDR imaging of dynamic scenes and it is expected that this number will grow in the future. Due to the large number of algorithms, it is a difficult and time-consuming task to conduct subjective experiments for benchmarking recently proposed algorithms. In this thesis, first, a taxonomy of HDR deghosting methods and the key characteristics of each group of algorithms are introduced. Next, the potential artifacts which are observed frequently in the outputs of HDR deghosting algorithms are defined and an objective HDR image deghosting quality metric is presented.     High dynamic range video merging, tone mapping, and real-time implementation

    Although High Dynamic Range (High Dynamic Range (HDR)) imaging has been the subject of significant research over the past fifteen years, the goal of cinemaquality HDR video has not yet been achieved. This work references an optical method patented by Contrast Optical which is used to capture sequences of Low Dynamic Range (LDR) images that can be used to form HDR images as the basis for HDR video. Because of the large diverence in exposure spacing of the LDR images captured by this camera, present methods of merging LDR images are insufficient to produce cinema quality HDR images and video without significant visible artifacts. Thus the focus of the research presented is two fold. The first contribution is a new method of combining LDR images with exposure differences of greater than 3 stops into an HDR image. The second contribution is a method of tone mapping HDR video which solves potential problems of HDR video flicker and automated parameter control of the tone mapping operator. A prototype of this HDR video capture technique along with the combining and tone mapping algorithms have been implemented in a high-definition HDR-video system. Additionally, Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) hardware implementation details are given to support real time HDR video. L objectif de la thèse est la conception d un système de visiontemps réel à grande gamme dynamique (HDR). L axe principal sera la reconstruction, en temps réelet à la cadence du capteur (60 images/sec), d une vidéo à grande dynamique sur une architecturede calcul embarquée.La plupart des capteurs actuels produisent une image numérique qui n est pas capable de reproduireles vraies échelles d intensités lumineuses du monde réel.
