    Simulating realistic multiparty speech data: for the development of distant microphone ASR systems

    Automatic speech recognition has become a ubiquitous technology integrated into our daily lives. However, the problem remains challenging when the speaker is far away from the microphone. In such scenarios, the speech is degraded both by reverberation and by the presence of additive noise. This situation is particularly challenging when there are competing speakers present (i.e. multi-party scenarios) Acoustic scene simulation has been a major tool for training and developing distant microphone speech recognition systems, and is now being used to develop solutions for mult-party scenarios. It has been used both in training -- as it allows cheap generation of limitless amounts of data -- and for evaluation -- because it can provide easy access to a ground truth (i.e. a noise-free target signal). However, whilst much work has been conducted to produce realistic artificial scene simulators, the signals produced from such simulators are only as good as the `metadata' being used to define the setups, i.e., the data describing, for example, the number of speakers and their distribution relative to the microphones. This thesis looks at how realistic metadata can be derived by analysing how speakers behave in real domestic environments. In particular, how to produce scenes that provide a realistic distribution for various factors that are known to influence the 'difficulty' of the scene, including the separation angle between speakers, the absolute and relative distances of speakers to microphones, and the pattern of temporal overlap of speech. Using an existing audio-visual multi-party conversational dataset, CHiME-5, each of these aspects has been studied in turn. First, producing a realistic angular separation between speakers allows for algorithms which enhance signals based on the direction of arrival to be fairly evaluated, reducing the mismatch between real and simulated data. This was estimated using automatic people detection techniques in video recordings from CHiME-5. Results show that commonly used datasets of simulated signals do not follow a realistic distribution, and when a realistic distribution is enforced, a significant drop in performance is observed. Second, by using multiple cameras it has been possible to estimate the 2-D positions of people inside each scene. This has allowed the estimation of realistic distributions for the absolute distance to the microphone and relative distance to the competing speaker. The results show grouping behaviour among participants when located in a room and the impact this has on performance depends on the room size considered. Finally, the amount of overlap and points in the mixture which contain overlap were explored using finite-state models. These models allowed for mixtures to be generated, which approached the overlap patterns observed in the real data. Features derived from these models were also shown to be a predictor of the difficulty of the mixture. At each stage of the project, simulated datasets derived using the realistic metadata distributions have been compared to existing standard datasets that use naive or uninformed metadata distributions, and implications for speech recognition performance are observed and discussed. This work has demonstrated how unrealistic approaches can produce over-promising results, and can bias research towards techniques that might not work well in practice. Results will also be valuable in informing the design of future simulated datasets

    Effects of errorless learning on the acquisition of velopharyngeal movement control

This study investigated whether the same principle holds for learning velopharyngeal movement control. Normal speaking participants learned to produce hypernasal speech in either an errorless learning condition (in which the possibility for errors was limited) or an errorful learning condition (in which the possibility for errors was not limited). Nasality level of the participants’ speech was measured by nasometer and reflected by nasalance scores (in %). Errorless learners practiced producing hypernasal speech with a threshold nasalance score of 10% at the beginning, which gradually increased to a threshold of 50% at the end. The same set of threshold targets were presented to errorful learners but in a reversed order. Errors were defined by the proportion of speech with a nasalance score below the threshold. The results showed that, relative to errorful learners, errorless learners displayed fewer errors (50.7% vs. 17.7%) and a higher mean nasalance score (31.3% vs. 46.7%) during the acquisition phase. Furthermore, errorless learners outperformed errorful learners in both retention and novel transfer tests.     Distributed speech separation in spatially unconstrained microphone arrays

    International audienceSpeech separation with several speakers is a challenging task because of the non-stationarity of the speech and the strong signal similarity between interferent sources. Current state-of-the-art solutions can separate well the different sources using sophisticated deep neural networks which are very tedious to train. When several microphones are available, spatial information can be exploited to design much simpler algorithms to discriminate speakers. We propose a distributed algorithm that can process spatial information in a spatially unconstrained microphone array. The algorithm relies on a convolutional recurrent neural network that can exploit the signal diversity from the distributed nodes. In a typical case of a meeting room, this algorithm can capture an estimate of each source in a first step and propagate it over the microphone array in order to increase the separation performance in a second step. We show that this approach performs even better when the number of sources and nodes increases. We also study the influence of a mismatch in the number of sources between the training and testing conditions

    Recurrent neural networks for multi-microphone speech separation

    This thesis takes the classical signal processing problem of separating the speech of a target speaker from a real-world audio recording containing noise, background interference — from competing speech or other non-speech sources —, and reverberation, and seeks data-driven solutions based on supervised learning methods, particularly recurrent neural networks (RNNs). Such speech separation methods can inject robustness in automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems and have been an active area of research for the past two decades. We particularly focus on applications where multi-channel recordings are available. Stand-alone beamformers cannot simultaneously suppress diffuse-noise and protect the desired signal from any distortions. Post-filters complement the beamformers in obtaining the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) estimate of the desired signal. Time-frequency (TF) masking — a method having roots in computational auditory scene analysis (CASA) — is a suitable candidate for post-filtering, but the challenge lies in estimating the TF masks. The use of RNNs — in particular the bi-directional long short-term memory (BLSTM) architecture — as a post-filter estimating TF masks for a delay-and-sum beamformer (DSB) — using magnitude spectral and phase-based features — is proposed. The data—recorded in 4 challenging realistic environments—from the CHiME-3 challenge is used. Two different TF masks — Wiener filter and log-ratio — are identified as suitable targets for learning. The separated speech is evaluated based on objective speech intelligibility measures: short-term objective intelligibility (STOI) and frequency-weighted segmental SNR (fwSNR). The word error rates (WERs) as reported by the previous state-of-the-art ASR back-end — when fed with the test data of the CHiME-3 challenge — are interpreted against the objective scores for understanding the relationships of the latter with the former. Overall, a consistent improvement in the objective scores brought in by the RNNs is observed compared to that of feed-forward neural networks and a baseline MVDR beamformer

    Acoustic event detection and localization using distributed microphone arrays

    Automatic acoustic scene analysis is a complex task that involves several functionalities: detection (time), localization (space), separation, recognition, etc. This thesis focuses on both acoustic event detection (AED) and acoustic source localization (ASL), when several sources may be simultaneously present in a room. In particular, the experimentation work is carried out with a meeting-room scenario. Unlike previous works that either employed models of all possible sound combinations or additionally used video signals, in this thesis, the time overlapping sound problem is tackled by exploiting the signal diversity that results from the usage of multiple microphone array beamformers. The core of this thesis work is a rather computationally efficient approach that consists of three processing stages. In the first, a set of (null) steering beamformers is used to carry out diverse partial signal separations, by using multiple arbitrarily located linear microphone arrays, each of them composed of a small number of microphones. In the second stage, each of the beamformer output goes through a classification step, which uses models for all the targeted sound classes (HMM-GMM, in the experiments). Then, in a third stage, the classifier scores, either being intra- or inter-array, are combined using a probabilistic criterion (like MAP) or a machine learning fusion technique (fuzzy integral (FI), in the experiments). The above-mentioned processing scheme is applied in this thesis to a set of complexity-increasing problems, which are defined by the assumptions made regarding identities (plus time endpoints) and/or positions of sounds. In fact, the thesis report starts with the problem of unambiguously mapping the identities to the positions, continues with AED (positions assumed) and ASL (identities assumed), and ends with the integration of AED and ASL in a single system, which does not need any assumption about identities or positions. The evaluation experiments are carried out in a meeting-room scenario, where two sources are temporally overlapped; one of them is always speech and the other is an acoustic event from a pre-defined set. Two different databases are used, one that is produced by merging signals actually recorded in the UPCÂżs department smart-room, and the other consists of overlapping sound signals directly recorded in the same room and in a rather spontaneous way. From the experimental results with a single array, it can be observed that the proposed detection system performs better than either the model based system or a blind source separation based system. Moreover, the product rule based combination and the FI based fusion of the scores resulting from the multiple arrays improve the accuracies further. On the other hand, the posterior position assignment is performed with a very small error rate. Regarding ASL and assuming an accurate AED system output, the 1-source localization performance of the proposed system is slightly better than that of the widely-used SRP-PHAT system, working in an event-based mode, and it even performs significantly better than the latter one in the more complex 2-source scenario. Finally, though the joint system suffers from a slight degradation in terms of classification accuracy with respect to the case where the source positions are known, it shows the advantage of carrying out the two tasks, recognition and localization, with a single system, and it allows the inclusion of information about the prior probabilities of the source positions. It is worth noticing also that, although the acoustic scenario used for experimentation is rather limited, the approach and its formalism were developed for a general case, where the number and identities of sources are not constrained
