Spring School on Language, Music, and Cognition: Organizing Events in Time
The interdisciplinary spring school “Language, music, and cognition: Organizing events in time” was held from February 26 to March 2, 2018 at the Institute of Musicology of the University of Cologne. Language, speech, and music as events in time were explored from different perspectives including evolutionary biology, social cognition, developmental psychology, cognitive neuroscience of speech, language, and communication, as well as computational and biological approaches to language and music. There were 10 lectures, 4 workshops, and 1 student poster session.
Overall, the spring school investigated language and music as neurocognitive systems and focused on a mechanistic approach exploring the neural substrates underlying musical, linguistic, social, and emotional processes and behaviors. In particular, researchers approached questions concerning cognitive processes, computational procedures, and neural mechanisms underlying the temporal organization of language and music, mainly from two perspectives: one was concerned with syntax or structural representations of language and music as neurocognitive systems (i.e., an intrapersonal perspective), while the other emphasized social interaction and emotions in their communicative function (i.e., an interpersonal perspective). The spring school not only acted as a platform for knowledge transfer and exchange but also generated a number of important research questions as challenges for future investigations
Population-scale organization of cerebellar granule neuron signaling during a visuomotor behavior.
Granule cells at the input layer of the cerebellum comprise over half the neurons in the human brain and are thought to be critical for learning. However, little is known about granule neuron signaling at the population scale during behavior. We used calcium imaging in awake zebrafish during optokinetic behavior to record transgenically identified granule neurons throughout a cerebellar population. A significant fraction of the population was responsive at any given time. In contrast to core precerebellar populations, granule neuron responses were relatively heterogeneous, with variation in the degree of rectification and the balance of positive versus negative changes in activity. Functional correlations were strongest for nearby cells, with weak spatial gradients in the degree of rectification and the average sign of response. These data open a new window upon cerebellar function and suggest granule layer signals represent elementary building blocks under-represented in core sensorimotor pathways, thereby enabling the construction of novel patterns of activity for learning
DEVELOPMENT OF A CEREBELLAR MEAN FIELD MODEL: THE THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK, THE IMPLEMENTATION AND THE FIRST APPLICATION
Brain modeling constantly evolves to improve the accuracy of the simulated brain dynamics with the ambitious aim to build a digital twin of the brain. Specific models tuned on brain regions specific features empower the brain simulations introducing bottom-up physiology properties into data-driven simulators. Despite the cerebellum contains 80 % of the neurons and is deeply involved in a wide range of functions, from sensorimotor to cognitive ones, a specific cerebellar model is still missing. Furthermore, its quasi-crystalline multi-layer circuitry deeply differs from the cerebral cortical one, therefore is hard to imagine a unique general model suitable for the realistic simulation of both cerebellar and cerebral cortex.
The present thesis tackles the challenge of developing a specific model for the cerebellum. Specifically, multi-neuron multi-layer mean field (MF) model of the cerebellar network, including Granule Cells, Golgi Cells, Molecular Layer Interneurons, and Purkinje Cells, was implemented, and validated against experimental data and the corresponding spiking neural network microcircuit model. The cerebellar MF model was built using a system of interdependent equations, where the single neuronal populations and topological parameters were captured by neuron-specific inter- dependent Transfer Functions. The model time resolution was optimized using Local Field Potentials recorded experimentally with high-density multielectrode array from acute mouse cerebellar slices. The present MF model satisfactorily captured the average discharge of different microcircuit neuronal populations in response to various input patterns and was able to predict the changes in Purkinje Cells firing patterns occurring in specific behavioral conditions: cortical plasticity mapping, which drives learning in associative tasks, and Molecular Layer Interneurons feed-forward inhibition, which controls Purkinje Cells activity patterns.
The cerebellar multi-layer MF model thus provides a computationally efficient tool that will allow to investigate the causal relationship between microscopic neuronal properties and ensemble brain activity in health and pathological conditions. Furthermore, preliminary attempts to simulate a pathological cerebellum were done in the perspective of introducing our multi-layer cerebellar MF model in whole-brain simulators to realize patient-specific treatments, moving ahead towards personalized medicine. Two preliminary works assessed the relevant impact of the cerebellum on whole-brain dynamics and its role in modulating complex responses in causal connected cerebral regions, confirming that a specific model is required to further investigate the cerebellum-on- cerebrum influence.
The framework presented in this thesis allows to develop a multi-layer MF model depicting the features of a specific brain region (e.g., cerebellum, basal ganglia), in order to define a general strategy to build up a pool of biology grounded MF models for computationally feasible simulations. Interconnected bottom-up MF models integrated in large-scale simulators would capture specific features of different brain regions, while the applications of a virtual brain would have a substantial impact on the reality ranging from the characterization of neurobiological processes, subject-specific preoperative plans, and development of neuro-prosthetic devices
Neurocognitive Informatics Manifesto.
Informatics studies all aspects of the structure of natural and artificial information systems. Theoretical and abstract approaches to information have made great advances, but human information processing is still unmatched in many areas, including information management, representation and understanding. Neurocognitive informatics is a new, emerging field that should help to improve the matching of artificial and natural systems, and inspire better computational algorithms to solve problems that are still beyond the reach of machines. In this position paper examples of neurocognitive inspirations and promising directions in this area are given
Whole brain Probabilistic Generative Model toward Realizing Cognitive Architecture for Developmental Robots
Building a humanlike integrative artificial cognitive system, that is, an
artificial general intelligence, is one of the goals in artificial intelligence
and developmental robotics. Furthermore, a computational model that enables an
artificial cognitive system to achieve cognitive development will be an
excellent reference for brain and cognitive science. This paper describes the
development of a cognitive architecture using probabilistic generative models
(PGMs) to fully mirror the human cognitive system. The integrative model is
called a whole-brain PGM (WB-PGM). It is both brain-inspired and PGMbased. In
this paper, the process of building the WB-PGM and learning from the human

Community-Derived Core Concepts for Neuroscience Higher Education
Core concepts provide a framework for organizing facts and understanding in neuroscience higher education curricula. Core concepts are overarching principles that identify patterns in neuroscience processes and phenomena and can be used as a foundational scaffold for neuroscience knowledge. The need for community-derived core concepts is pressing, because both the pace of research and number of neuroscience programs are rapidly expanding. While general biology and many subdisciplines within biology have identified core concepts, neuroscience has yet to establish a community-derived set of core concepts for neuroscience higher education. We used an empirical approach involving more than 100 neuroscience educators to identify a list of core concepts. The process of identifying neuroscience core concepts was modeled after the process used to develop physiology core concepts and involved a nationwide survey and a working session of 103 neuroscience educators. The iterative process identified eight core concepts and accompanying explanatory paragraphs. The eight core concepts are abbreviated as communication modalities, emergence, evolution, gene–environment interactions, information processing, nervous system functions, plasticity, and structure–function. Here, we describe the pedagogical research process used to establish core concepts for the neuroscience field and provide examples on how the core concepts can be embedded in neuroscience education
Layered control architectures in robots and vertebrates
We revieiv recent research in robotics, neuroscience, evolutionary neurobiology, and ethology with the aim of highlighting some points of agreement and convergence. Specifically, we com pare Brooks' (1986) subsumption architecture for robot control with research in neuroscience demonstrating layered control systems in vertebrate brains, and with research in ethology that emphasizes the decomposition of control into multiple, intertwined behavior systems. From this perspective we then describe interesting parallels between the subsumption architecture and the natural layered behavior system that determines defense reactions in the rat. We then consider the action selection problem for robots and vertebrates and argue that, in addition to subsumption- like conflict resolution mechanisms, the vertebrate nervous system employs specialized selection mechanisms located in a group of central brain structures termed the basal ganglia. We suggest that similar specialized switching mechanisms might be employed in layered robot control archi tectures to provide effective and flexible action selection
How recent learning shapes the brain: Memory-dependent functional reconfiguration of brain circuits
The process of storing recently encoded episodic mnestic traces so that they are available for subsequent retrieval is accompanied by specific brain functional connectivity (FC) changes. In this fMRI study, we examined the early processing of memories in twenty-eight healthy participants performing an episodic memory task interposed between two resting state sessions. Memory performance was assessed through a forced-choice recognition test after the scanning sessions. We investigated resting state system configuration changes via Independent Component Analysis by cross-modeling baseline resting state spatial maps onto the post-encoding resting state, and post-encoding resting state spatial maps onto baseline. We identified both persistent and plastic components of the overall brain functional configuration between baseline and post-encoding. While FC patterns within executive, default mode, and cerebellar circuits persisted from baseline to post-encoding, FC within the visual circuit changed. A significant session Ă— performance interaction characterized medial temporal lobe and prefrontal cortex FC with the visual circuit, as well as thalamic FC within the executive control system. Findings reveal early-stage FC changes at the system-level subsequent to a learning experience and associated with inter-individual variation in memory performance
An insula hierarchical network architecture for active interoceptive inference
In the brain, the insular cortex receives a vast amount of interoceptive information, ascending through deep brain structures, from multiple visceral organs. The unique hierarchical and modular architecture of the insula suggests specialization for processing interoceptive afferents. Yet, the biological significance of the insula's neuroanatomical architecture, in relation to deep brain structures, remains obscure. In this opinion piece, we propose the Insula Hierarchical Modular Adaptive Interoception Control (IMAC) model to suggest that insula modules (granular, dysgranular and agranular), forming parallel networks with the prefrontal cortex and striatum, are specialized to form higher order interoceptive representations. These interoceptive representations are recruited in a context-dependent manner to support habitual, model-based and exploratory control of visceral organs and physiological processes. We discuss how insula interoceptive representations may give rise to conscious feelings that best explain lower order deep brain interoceptive representations, and how the insula may serve to defend the body and mind against pathological depression
