Systemic effector conceptual model in groupware implementation
Network software systems and groupware within organizations differ from other information technologies, requiring individuals to 'design' their own use. Users and groups can choose how to engage with these systems (Hassall, 1998), and use is dependent upon existing technological framing (Orlikowski, 1992). Groupware provides opportunities to study interaction between technological and organizational potentials. The action and structure duality of structuration theory (Giddens, 1984) points to the need for systemic understandings. Moreover, deconstructive schemes (e.g. Dudley and Hassall 1995,1996) demonstrate a plurality of overt and ulterior motivations in use. The Systemic Effector Model has been developed based upon longitudinal research in groupware implementation. This abstracted perspective relates choice of facility and design of action to important motivators at the individual and systemic levels. The genesis and explanatory power of the model is explored through survey and case study data
Research 2.0 : improving participation in online research communities
Web 2.0 thinking and technologies create a number of new opportunities to conduct research broadly labeled as Research 2.0. Research 2.0 is a growing area of academic and commercial interest, which includes research undertaken in online research communities. This research in progress paper explores the practice of online research communities using a case study example operated by the commercial market research company Virtual Surveys Limited (VSL) in the UK on behalf of their client United Biscuits UK Ltd.
The preliminary findings are based on VSL and academics working together to improve the online research community participantsâ response rate and the quality of contributions. Data collected for this study is based on meetings, participant observation, and a pilot survey of United Biscuits online research community (snackrs.com) members.
Using the responses of 112 snackrs.com community members, a preliminary typology of motivational factors is proposed. This can be used to refine the recruitment and development of activities in an online research community. Also, a model for supporting online research communities to ensure longitudinal engagement based on an adaptation of Salmonâs (2004) 5 Stage Model for e-moderation is proposed, extending the 5 stages to 7 â adding the stages of selection and disengagemen

Diffusion of social cognitive theory in information systems research: A bibliometric study
Recently, Social Cognitive theory (SCT) has been widely adapted across various disciplines in business and management as well as Information Systems (IS) research. In IS, the use of SCT remains in its early stages. Few bibliometric analyses have been published on mapping theories across previous literature. However, to date factors related to literature review mapping in relation to SCT in IS have not been much examined. This paper aims to investigate the expliotiation of SCT in IS research based on bibliometric analysis. In this study a biblimetric analysis is conducted on previous literature reviews/abstracts based on Association of Business Schools (ABS) journal rankings from Information Management field perspective. 62 articles in Information Management field have utilised SCT were published in 17 (out of 53 journals) between 1995 and 2010. The study findings has identified that the organisation/firm and actors as a unit of analysis, positivist paradigm, empirical and quantitative research as well as survey method were used significantly in combination with SCT in IS studies. This bibliometric study will provide the needed platform for a better understanding of high quality research activities. Consequently, this can be used as an indicator to measure research quality and the impact of future direction and exploitation of SCT in IS research
An emergence perspective on entrepreneurship: processes, structure and methodology
This paper explores entrepreneurship from the perspective of emergence, drawing on literature in
complexity theory, social theory and entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship is conceptualised as the
production of emergence, or emergent properties, via a simple model of initial conditions, processes of
emergence that produces emergent properties at multiple levels (new phenomena such as products,
services, firms, networks, patterns of behaviour, identities). Conceptualisation through emergence thus
embraces actors, context, processes and (structural) outcomes. This paper builds on previous work that
theorises the relationship between entrepreneurship and social change. We extend that work by
considering the methodological implications of relating processes of entrepreneurship to the emergence
of new phenomena
The organizational implications of medical imaging in the context of Malaysian hospitals
This research investigated the implementation and use of medical imaging in the
context of Malaysian hospitals. In this report medical imaging refers to PACS,
RIS/HIS and imaging modalities which are linked through a computer network. The
study examined how the internal context of a hospital and its external context
together influenced the implementation of medical imaging, and how this in turn
shaped organizational roles and relationships within the hospital itself. It further
investigated how the implementation of the technology in one hospital affected its
implementation in another hospital. The research used systems theory as the
theoretical framework for the study. Methodologically, the study used a case-based
approach and multiple methods to obtain data. The case studies included two
hospital-based radiology departments in Malaysia.
The outcomes of the research suggest that the implementation of medical imaging in
community hospitals is shaped by the external context particularly the role played by
the Ministry of Health. Furthermore, influences from both the internal and external
contexts have a substantial impact on the process of implementing medical imaging
and the extent of the benefits that the organization can gain. In the context of roles
and social relationships, the findings revealed that the routine use of medical
imaging has substantially affected radiographersâ roles, and the social relationships
between non clinical personnel and clinicians. This study found no change in the
relationship between radiographers and radiologists. Finally, the approaches to
implementation taken in the hospitals studied were found to influence those taken by
other hospitals.
Overall, this study makes three important contributions. Firstly, it extends Barleyâs
(1986, 1990) research by explicitly demonstrating that the organizationâs internal and
external contexts together shape the implementation and use of technology, that the
processes of implementing and using technology impact upon roles, relationships
and networks and that a role-based approach alone is inadequate to examine the
outcomes of deploying an advanced technology. Secondly, this study contends that
scalability of technology in the context of developing countries is not necessarily
linear. Finally, this study offers practical contributions that can benefit healthcare
organizations in Malaysia
Online help-seeking in communities of practice
Interactive online help systems are considered to be a fruitful supplement to traditional IT helpdesks, which are often overloaded. They often comprise user-generated FAQ collections playing the role of technology-based conceptual artifacts. Two main questions arise: how the conceptual artifacts should be used, and which factors influence their acceptance in a community of practice (CoP). Firstly, this paper offers a theoretical frame and a usage scenario for technology-based conceptual artifacts against the theoretical background of the academic help-seeking and CoP approach. Each of the two approaches is extensively covered by psychological and educational research literature, however their combination is not yet sufficiently investigated. Secondly, the paper proposes a research model explaining the acceptance of conceptual artifacts. The model includes usersâ expectations towards the artifact, perceived social influence and usersâ roles in the CoP as predictors of artifact use intention and actual usage. A correlational study conducted in an academic software usersâ CoP and involving structural equations modeling validates the model, suggesting thus a research line that is worth further pursuing. For educational practice, the study suggests three ways of supporting knowledge sharing in CoPs, i.e. use of technology-based conceptual artifacts, roles and division of labor, and purposeful communication in CoPs

This report examines this question through an analysis of state agency-university researcher partnerships that exist in State Longitudinal Data Systems (SLDS). Building state agency-university researcher partnerships is an important value of SLDS. To examine state agency-university researcher partnerships within SLDS, our analysis is guided by the following set of questions based on 71 interviews conducted with individuals most directly involved with SLDS efforts in Virginia, Maryland, Texas and Washington. The findings from this analysis suggest that each stateâs SLDS organization and governance structure includes university partners in differing ways. In general, stronger partnership efforts are driven by legislative action or executive-level leadership. Regardless of structure, the operation of these partnerships is shaped by the agencyâs previous experience and cultural norms surrounding the value and inclusion of university researchers
Managing in conflict: How actors distribute conflict in an industrial network
IMP researchers have examined conflict as a threat to established business relationships and commercial exchanges, drawing on theories and concepts developed in organization studies. We examine cases of conflict in relationships from the oil and gas industry's service sector, focusing on conflicts of interest and resources, and conflict as experienced by actors. Through a comparative case study design, we propose an explanation of how actors manage conflict and manage in conflict given that they tend to value and maintain relationships beyond episodes of exchange. We consider conflicts in relationships from a network perspective, showing that actors experienced these while adapting to changes in their business setting, modifying their roles in that network. By identifying conflict with the organizing forms of relationship and network, we show how actors formulate conflict through pursuing and combining a number of strategies, distributing the conflict across an enlarged network
