Genetic Algorithms in Time-Dependent Environments
The influence of time-dependent fitnesses on the infinite population dynamics
of simple genetic algorithms (without crossover) is analyzed. Based on general
arguments, a schematic phase diagram is constructed that allows one to
characterize the asymptotic states in dependence on the mutation rate and the
time scale of changes. Furthermore, the notion of regular changes is raised for
which the population can be shown to converge towards a generalized
quasispecies. Based on this, error thresholds and an optimal mutation rate are
approximately calculated for a generational genetic algorithm with a moving
needle-in-the-haystack landscape. The so found phase diagram is fully

Self-adaptation of mutation distribution in evolution strategies for dynamic optimization problems

All Rights Reserved.Evolution strategies with q-Gaussian mutation, which allows the self-adaptation of the mutation distribution shape, is proposed for dynamic optimization problems in this paper. In the proposed method, a real parameter q, which allows to smoothly control the shape of the mutation distribution, is encoded in the chromosome of the individuals and is allowed to evolve. In the experimental study, the q-Gaussian mutation is compared to Gaussian and Cauchy mutation on experiments generated from the simulation of evolutionary robots and on dynamic optimization problems generated by the Moving Peaks generator

An Evolutionary Approach to the Design of Controllable Cellular Automata Structure for Random Number Generation
Cellular Automata (CA) has been used in pseudorandom number generation over a decade. Recent studies show that two-dimensional (2-d) CA Pseudorandom Number Generators (PRNGs) may generate better random sequences than conventional one-dimensional (1-d) CA PRNGs, but they are more complex to implement in hardware than 1-d CA PRNGs. In this paper, we propose a new class of 1-d CA Controllable Cellular Automata (CCA) without much deviation from the structure simplicity of conventional 1-d CA. We give a general definition of CCA first and then introduce two types of CCA – CCA0 and CCA2. Our initial study on them shows that these two CCA PRNGs have better randomness quality than conventional 1-d CA PRNGs but their randomness is affected by their structures. To find good CCA0/CCA2 structures for pseudorandom number generation, we evolve them using the Evolutionary Multi-Objective Optimization (EMOO) techniques. Three different algorithms are presented in this paper. One makes use of an aggregation function; the other two are based on the Vector Evaluated Genetic Algorithm (VEGA). Evolution results show that these three algorithms all perform well. Applying a set of randomness tests on the evolved CCA PRNGs, we demonstrate that their randomness is better than that of 1-d CA PRNGs and can be comparable to that of two-dimensional CA PRNGs
Discrete and fuzzy dynamical genetic programming in the XCSF learning classifier system
A number of representation schemes have been presented for use within
learning classifier systems, ranging from binary encodings to neural networks.
This paper presents results from an investigation into using discrete and fuzzy
dynamical system representations within the XCSF learning classifier system. In
particular, asynchronous random Boolean networks are used to represent the
traditional condition-action production system rules in the discrete case and
asynchronous fuzzy logic networks in the continuous-valued case. It is shown
possible to use self-adaptive, open-ended evolution to design an ensemble of
such dynamical systems within XCSF to solve a number of well-known test
problems
A genetic algorithm approach to designing and modelling of a multi-functional fractal manufacturing layout
A dynamic and optimal shop floor design, modelling and implementation is key to achieving successful Fractal Manufacturing System (FrMS). To build adaptive and fault-tolerant fractal layout, attention is paid to issues of shop floor planning, function layout, determination of capacity level, cell composition planning and flow distances of products. A full fledged FrMS. layout is multi-functional and is capable of producing a variety of products with minimal reconfiguration. This paper is part and a progression of an on-going project whereby Genetic Algorithm (GA) is adopted to design and model a flexible and multi-functional FrMS floor layout. GA is used in the project for modeling and simulation. The design implementation is done using MATLAB. The result is a fault tolerant configuration that self-regulates and adapts to unpredictable changes in the manufacturing environment arising from lead time reduction pressure, inventories, product customization and other challenges of a dynamic and volatile operational environment
Embodied Evolution in Collective Robotics: A Review
This paper provides an overview of evolutionary robotics techniques applied
to on-line distributed evolution for robot collectives -- namely, embodied
evolution. It provides a definition of embodied evolution as well as a thorough
description of the underlying concepts and mechanisms. The paper also presents
a comprehensive summary of research published in the field since its inception
(1999-2017), providing various perspectives to identify the major trends. In
particular, we identify a shift from considering embodied evolution as a
parallel search method within small robot collectives (fewer than 10 robots) to
embodied evolution as an on-line distributed learning method for designing
collective behaviours in swarm-like collectives. The paper concludes with a
discussion of applications and open questions, providing a milestone for past

Identifying smart design attributes for Industry 4.0 customization using a clustering Genetic Algorithm
Industry 4.0 aims at achieving mass customization at a
mass production cost. A key component to realizing this is accurate
prediction of customer needs and wants, which is however a
challenging issue due to the lack of smart analytics tools. This
paper investigates this issue in depth and then develops a predictive
analytic framework for integrating cloud computing, big data
analysis, business informatics, communication technologies, and
digital industrial production systems. Computational intelligence
in the form of a cluster k-means approach is used to manage
relevant big data for feeding potential customer needs and wants
to smart designs for targeted productivity and customized mass
production. The identification of patterns from big data is achieved
with cluster k-means and with the selection of optimal attributes
using genetic algorithms. A car customization case study shows
how it may be applied and where to assign new clusters with
growing knowledge of customer needs and wants. This approach
offer a number of features suitable to smart design in realizing
