    Towards Formalizing QoS of Web Services with Weighted Automata

    Web services (WSs) are used more and more as components of distributed applications with a goal to resolve complex tasks that simple services cannot. This use of WSs is connected to the emergence of languages like WS-BPEL which allows describing the external behaviour of WSs on top of the service interfaces. The use of WSs as components of distributed applications implies the possibility to change a failing service for another which can do at least the same things as the replaced service. The composition issues are also of particular interest to WSs users. Different solutions have been proposed during the last years to check such properties, but, to our knowledge, none of them takes QoS aspects into account. This paper introduces underpinnings and a tool for verifying WSs substitutivity and well-formed composition while considering WSs costs such as the execution time of the different operations provided by WSs

    Semantic Web Services Provisioning

    Semantic Web Services constitute an important research area, where vari ous underlying frameworks, such as WSMO and OWL-S, define Semantic Web ontologies to describe Web services, so they can be automatically discovered, composed, and invoked. Service discovery has been traditionally interpreted as a functional filter in current Semantic Web Services frameworks, frequently performed by Description Logics reasoners. However, semantic provisioning has to be performed taking Quality-of-Service (QOS) into account, defining user preferences that enable QOS-aware Semantic Web Service selection. Nowadays, the research focus is actually on QOS-aware processes, so cur rent proposals are developing the field by providing QOS support to semantic provisioning, especially in selection processes. These processes lead to opti mization problems, where the best service among a set of services has to be selected, so Description Logics cannot be used in this context. Furthermore, user preferences has to be semantically defined so they can be used within selection processes. There are several proposals that extend Semantic Web Services frameworks allowing QOS-aware semantic provisioning. However, proposed selection techniques are very coupled with their proposed extensions, most of them being implemented ad hoc. Thus, there is a semantic gap between functional descriptions (usually using WSMO or OWL-S) and user preferences, which are specific for each proposal, using different ontologies or even non-semantic de scriptions, and depending on its corresponding ad hoc selection technique. In this report, we give an overview of most important Semantic Web Ser vices frameworks, showing a comparison between them. Then, a thorough analysis of state-of-the art proposals on QOS-aware semantic provisioning and user preferences descriptions is presented, discussing about their applicabil ity, advantages, and defects. Results from this analysis motivate our research work, which has been already materialized in two early contributions.Los servicios web semánticos constituyen un importante campo de inves tigación, en el cual distintos frameworks, como por ejemplo WSMO y OWL-S, definen ontologías de la web semántica para describir servicios web, de for ma que estos puedan ser descubiertos, compuestos e invocados de manera automática. El descubrimiento de servicios ha sido interpretado tradicional mente como un filtro funcional en los frameworks actuales de servicios web semánticos, usando para ello razonadores de lógica descriptiva. Sin embargo, las tareas de aprovisionamiento semántico deberían tener en cuenta la calidad del servicio, definiendo para ello preferencias de usuario de manera que sea posible realizar una selección de servicios web semánticos sensible a la cali dad. Actualmente, el foco de la investigación está en procesos sensibles a la ca lidad, por lo que las propuestas actuales están trabajando en este campo intro duciendo el soporte adecuado a la calidad del servicio dentro del aprovisio namiento semántico, y principalmente en las tareas de selección. Estas tareas desembocan en problemas de optimización, donde el mejor servicio de entre un concjunto debe ser seleccionado, por lo que las lógicas descriptivas no pue den ser usadas en este contexto. Además, las preferencias de usuario deben ser definidas semánticamente, de forma que puedan ser usadas en las tareas de selección. Existen bastantes propuestas que extienden los frameworks de servicios web semánticos para habilitar el aprovisionamiento sensible a la calidad. Sin embargo, las técnicas de selección propuestas están altamente acopladas con dichas extensiones, donde la mayoría de ellas implementan algoritmos ad hoc. Por tanto, existe un salto semántico entre las descripciones funcionales (nor malmente usando WSMO o OWL-S) y las preferencias de usuario, las cuales son definidas específicamente por cada propuesta, usando ontologías distin tas o incluso descripciones no semánticas que dependen de la correspondiente técnica de selección ad hoc

    Policies for Web Services

    Web services are predominantly used to implement service-oriented architectures (SOA). However, there are several areas such as temporal dimensions, real-time, streaming, or efficient and flexible file transfers where web service functionality should be extended. These extensions can, for example, be achieved by using policies. Since there are often alternative solutions to provide functionality (e.g., different protocols can be used to achieve the transfer of data), the WS-Policy standard is especially useful to extend web services with policies. It allows to create policies to generally state the properties under which a service is provided and to explicitly express alternative properties. To extend the functionality of web services, two policies are introduced in this thesis: the Temporal Policy and the Communication Policy. The temporal policy is the foundation for adding temporal dimensions to a WS-Policy. The temporal policy itself is not a WS-Policy but an independent policy language that describes temporal dimensions of and dependencies between temporal policies and WS-Policies. Switching of protocol dependencies, pricing of services, quality of service, and security are example areas for using a temporal policy. To describe protocol dependencies of a service for streaming, real-time and file transfers, a communication policy can be utilized. The communication policy is a concrete WS-Policy. With the communication policy, a service can expose the protocols it depends on for a communication after its invocation. Thus, a web service client knows the protocols required to support a communication with the service. Therefore, it is possible to evaluate beforehand whether an invocation of a service is reasonable. On top of the newly introduced policies, novel mechanisms and tools are provided to alleviate service use and enable flexible and efficient data handling. Furthermore, the involvement of the end user in the development process can be achieved more easily. The Flex-SwA architecture, the first component in this thesis based on the newly introduced policies, implements the actual file transfers and streaming protocols that are described as dependencies in a communication policy. Several communication patterns support the flexible handling of the communication. A reference concept enables seamless message forwarding with reduced data movement. Based on the Flex-SwA implementation and the communication policy, it is possible to improve usability - especially in the area of service-oriented Grids - by integrating data transfers into an automatically generated web and Grid service client. The Web and Grid Service Browser is introduced in this thesis as such a generic client. It provides a familiar environment for using services by offering the client generation as part of the browser. Data transfers are directly integrated into service invocation without having to perform data transmissions explicitly. For multimedia MIME types, special plugins allow the consumption of multimedia data. To enable an end user to build applications that also leverage high performance computing resources, the Service-enabled Mashup Editor is presented that lets the user combine popular web applications with web and Grid services. Again, the communication policy provides descriptive means for file transfers and Flex-SwAs reference concept is used for data exchange. To show the applicability of these novel concepts, several use cases from the area of multimedia processing have been selected. Based on the temporal policy, the communication policy, Flex-SwA, the Web and Grid Service Browser, and the Service-enabled Mashup Editor, the development of a scalable service-oriented multimedia architecture is presented. The multimedia SOA offers, among others, a face detection workflow, a video-on-demand service, and an audio resynthesis service. More precisely, a video-on-demand service describes its dependency on a multicast protocol by using a communication policy. A temporal policy is then used to perform the description of a protocol switch from one multicast protocol to another one by changing the communication policy at the end of its validity period. The Service-enabled Mashup Editor is used as a client for the new multicast protocol after the multicast protocol has been switched. To stream single frames from a frame decoder service to a face detection service (which are both part of the face detection workflow) and to transfer audio files with the different Flex-SwA communication patterns to an audio resynthesis service, Flex-SwA is used. The invocation of the face detection workflow and the audio resynthesis service is realized with the Web and Grid Service Browser

    An incremental approach to web service composition

    Geographic web services will soon become subsumed in the e-commerce world, a world where the composition of simple or atomic services to build compound services is a key characteristic. Since currently no detailed model of composite geographic web services exists, and within the scope of work on a European Union-funded project, we define such basic composition as part of an effort to test for geographic web service interoperability. Rather than adopting current static methods, we build on the concept of incremental composition and provide a model for defining, composing and invoking compositions in a flexible manner.Keywords: Web service composition, incremental composition, semantic interoperability, interoperability testing.&nbsp

    L’Informatique Orienté Services représente un paradigme pour construire des applications distribuées sur Internet. L’Architecture Orientée Services(SOA) est un style architectural qui permet le développement de ces applications à base de services. Au cours de la dernière décennie, l’orchestration des services Web est devenue un domaine très actif dans la recherche scientifique et académique. Bien que de nombreux défis liés à l’orchestration aient été abordés, la fiabilité de l’orchestration et de sa vérification restent encore un sujet ouvert, prérequis et important de fait que ces orchestrations affectent aujourd’hui plusieurs activités quotidiennes. Cette thèse focalise sur le sujet d’orchestration des Services Web Fiables. En particulier, elle contribue avec un ensemble d’approches, de techniques et d’outils pour améliorer la sélection et l’orchestration des services web fiables. Premièrement, elle affine les phases du cycle de vie d’orchestration de services web afin d’assurer une vérification continuée de fiabilité lors des phases de conception et d’exécution. En outre, elle propose une architecture conceptuelle basée sur un registre de service amélioré, pour la mise en œuvre d’orchestrations fiables. Deuxièmement, elle présente une approche de mesure de similarité entre les services web. L’approche repose sur la comparaison des interfaces WSDL de services. L’approche sert à identifier les relations de similarité, de substituabilité et de composabilité entre services. L’outil WSSIM a été développé pour mettre en œuvre l’approche proposée. Pour validation, l’outil a été expérimenté avec un ensemble important de services web réels. Troisièmement, la thèse contribue avec une approche pour l’identification des substituts de services simples et complexes. L’approche utilise les techniques de mesure de similarité, la classification de service avec FCA et l’analyse de fiabilité pour identifier et sélectionner les meilleures substitutes. Un ensemble d’algorithmes aient été proposés pour décrire le processus d’identification.     Understanding semantic aware Grid middleware for e-Science

    In this paper we analyze several semantic-aware Grid middleware services used in e-Science applications. We describe them according to a common analysis framework, so as to find their commonalities and their distinguishing features. As a result of this analysis we categorize these services into three groups: information services, data access services and decision support services. We make comparisons and provide additional conclusions that are useful to understand better how these services have been developed and deployed, and how similar services would be developed in the future, mainly in the context of e-Science applications

    Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is an architectural style that builds enterprise solutions based on services. In SOA, the lack of trust between different parties affects the adoption of such architecture. Trust is as significant a factor for successful online interactions as it is in real life communities, and consequently, it is an important factor that is used as a criterion for service selection. In the context of online services and SOA, the literature shows that the field of trust is not mature. Trust definition and the consideration of the essentials of trust aspects do not reflect the true nature of trust online. This thesis proposes a trust-based service selection solution, which requires establishing trust for services and supporting service selection based on trust. This work considers building trust for service providers besides rating services, an area that is neglected in the literature. This work follows progressive steps to arrive at a solution. First, this work develops a trust definition and identifies trust principles, which cover different aspects of trust. Next, SOA is extended to build a trust-based SOA that supports trust-based service selection. In particular, a new component, the trust mediator, which is responsible for trust establishment is added to the architecture. Accordingly, a trust mediator framework is built according to the trust definition and principles to identify its main components. Subsequently, this work identifies the trust information, or metrics, for services and service providers. Accordingly, trust models are built to evaluate trust rates for the applicable metrics, services, and service providers. Moreover, this work addresses the trust bootstrapping challenge. The proposed trust bootstrapping approach addresses different challenges in the literature such as whitewashing and cold start.
