IEEE Access Special Section Editorial: Data Mining for Internet of Things

It is an irrefutable fact that the Internet of Things (IoT) will eventually change our daily lives because its applications and relevant technologies have been or will be penetrating our daily lives. Also, the IoT is aimed to connect all the things (e.g., devices and systems) together via the Internet, thus making it easy to collect the data of users or environments and to find out useful information from the gathered data by using data mining technologies. As a consequence, how intelligent systems are developed for the IoT has become a critical research topic today. This means that artificial intelligence (AI) technologies (e.g., supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and semi-supervised learning) were used in the development of intelligent systems for analyzing the data captured from IoT devices or making decisions for IoT systems. It can be easily seen that AI can make an IoT system more intelligent and thus more accurate. For example, various sensors can be used for a smart home system to pinpoint the location and analyze the behavior of a human; however, with AI technologies, a more accurate prediction can be provided on the two pieces of information of a human. One of the most important uses for AI technologies is to make IoT systems more intelligent in order to provide a more convenient environment for users; thus, how to use existing AI technologies or develop new AI technologies to construct a better IoT system has attracted the attention of researchers from different disciplines in recent years. That is why, besides using existing supervised, unsupervised, semi-supervised learning algorithms, data mining algorithms, and machine learning algorithms, several recent studies have also attempted to develop new intelligent methods for the devices or systems for the IoT. All these approaches for making an IoT system more intelligent can also be found in the articles of this Special Section

Harnessing Knowledge, Innovation and Competence in Engineering of Mission Critical Systems

    Get PDF
This book explores the critical role of acquisition, application, enhancement, and management of knowledge and human competence in the context of the largely digital and data/information dominated modern world. Whilst humanity owes much of its achievements to the distinct capability to learn from observation, analyse data, gain insights, and perceive beyond original realities, the systematic treatment of knowledge as a core capability and driver of success has largely remained the forte of pedagogy. In an increasingly intertwined global community faced with existential challenges and risks, the significance of knowledge creation, innovation, and systematic understanding and treatment of human competence is likely to be humanity's greatest weapon against adversity. This book was conceived to inform the decision makers and practitioners about the best practice pertinent to many disciplines and sectors. The chapters fall into three broad categories to guide the readers to gain insight from generic fundamentals to discipline-specific case studies and of the latest practice in knowledge and competence management

A framework development to predict remaining useful life of a gas turbine mechanical component

    Get PDF
Power-by-the-hour is a performance based offering for delivering outstanding service to operators of civil aviation aircraft. Operators need to guarantee to minimise downtime, reduce service cost and ensure value for money which requires an innovative advanced technology for predictive maintenance. Predictability, availability and reliability of the engine offers better service for operators, and the need to estimate the expected component failure prior to failure occurrence requires a proactive approach to predict the remaining useful life of components within an assembly. This research offers a framework for component remaining useful life prediction using assembly level data. The thesis presents a critical analysis on literature identifying the Weibull method, statistical technique and data-driven methodology relating to remaining useful life prediction, which are used in this research. The AS-IS practice captures relevant information based on the investigation conducted in the aerospace industry. The analysis of maintenance cycles relates to the examination of high-level events for engine availability, whereby more communications with industry showcase a through-life performance timeline visualisation. Overhaul sequence and activities are presented to gain insights of the timeline visualisation. The thesis covers the framework development and application to gas turbine single stage assembly, repair and replacement of components in single stage assembly, and multiple stage assembly. The framework is demonstrated in aerospace engines and power generation engines. The framework developed enables and supports domain experts to quickly respond to, and prepare for maintenance and on-time delivery of spare parts. The results of the framework show the probability of failure based on a pair of error values using the corresponding Scale and Shape parameters. The probability of failure is transformed into the remaining useful life depicting a typical Weibull distribution. The resulting Weibull curves developed with three scenarios of the case shows there are components renewals, therefore, the remaining useful life of the components are established. The framework is validated and verified through a case study with three scenarios and also through expert judgement
