Modeling of Phenomena and Dynamic Logic of Phenomena
Modeling of complex phenomena such as the mind presents tremendous
computational complexity challenges. Modeling field theory (MFT) addresses
these challenges in a non-traditional way. The main idea behind MFT is to match
levels of uncertainty of the model (also, problem or theory) with levels of
uncertainty of the evaluation criterion used to identify that model. When a
model becomes more certain, then the evaluation criterion is adjusted
dynamically to match that change to the model. This process is called the
Dynamic Logic of Phenomena (DLP) for model construction and it mimics processes
of the mind and natural evolution. This paper provides a formal description of
DLP by specifying its syntax, semantics, and reasoning system. We also outline
links between DLP and other logical approaches. Computational complexity issues
that motivate this work are presented using an example of polynomial models
Port choice by intra-regional container service operators : an application of decision-making techniques to liner services between Malaysian and other Asian ports
Intra-regional container service operators are challenged to design regular and reliable liner services connecting regional ports at the lowest cost and shortest transit time while considering customer demand. This paper focuses on the selection of ports of call in regular intra-regional container services, an under-researched part of the container shipping market. A combination of decision-making techniques (i.e. Analytical Hierarchy Process, fuzzy link-based and Evidential Reasoning) are presented to assist intra-regional container service operators in selecting ports of call. The proposed methodology is empirically applied to container services between Malaysian and other nearby Asian ports. While Port Klang is the main gateway to Malaysia, the results show that other Malaysian ports should play a more prominent role in accommodating intra-Asian container services. This research can assist maritime stakeholders in evaluating intra-regional port-to-port liner service configurations. Furthermore, the novel mix of decision-making techniques complements and enriches existing academic literature on port choice and liner service configuration
An Architectural Approach to Ensuring Consistency in Hierarchical Execution
Hierarchical task decomposition is a method used in many agent systems to
organize agent knowledge. This work shows how the combination of a hierarchy
and persistent assertions of knowledge can lead to difficulty in maintaining
logical consistency in asserted knowledge. We explore the problematic
consequences of persistent assumptions in the reasoning process and introduce
novel potential solutions. Having implemented one of the possible solutions,
Dynamic Hierarchical Justification, its effectiveness is demonstrated with an
empirical analysis
High-resolution optical and SAR image fusion for building database updating
This paper addresses the issue of cartographic database (DB) creation or updating using high-resolution synthetic aperture radar and optical images. In cartographic applications, objects of interest are mainly buildings and roads. This paper proposes a processing chain to create or update building DBs. The approach is composed of two steps. First, if a DB is available, the presence of each DB object is checked in the images. Then, we verify if objects coming from an image segmentation should be included in the DB. To do those two steps, relevant features are extracted from images in the neighborhood of the considered object. The object removal/inclusion in the DB is based on a score obtained by the fusion of features in the framework of DempsterâShafer evidence theory

Personalised feedback in the promotion of responsible gambling: a brief overview
Research into gambling has shown that irrational gambling-related cognitions linked to randomness and probabilities contribute to the initiation and maintenance of problematic gambling. A small body of empirical research has shown that educational programs about erroneous beliefs in gambling can successfully help change such cognitions. Studies have also shown that the way information is presented to gamblers is significant. Personalized behavioral feedback has been studied in many other areas outside of the gambling area (e.g., cigarette smoking). These examples from related areas suggest that behavioral feedback could also work in promoting responsible gambling. These approaches aim to change a personâs behavior via behavioral feedback. Such approaches are based on both the âstages of changeâ model and motivational interviewing. Therefore, in order to change peopleâs gambling behavior using behavioral tracking data, player feedback should also be presented in a tailored and motivational way, and take into account the stages of change model
