    A multi-objective performance optimisation framework for video coding

    Digital video technologies have become an essential part of the way visual information is created, consumed and communicated. However, due to the unprecedented growth of digital video technologies, competition for bandwidth resources has become fierce. This has highlighted a critical need for optimising the performance of video encoders. However, there is a dual optimisation problem, wherein, the objective is to reduce the buffer and memory requirements while maintaining the quality of the encoded video. Additionally, through the analysis of existing video compression techniques, it was found that the operation of video encoders requires the optimisation of numerous decision parameters to achieve the best trade-offs between factors that affect visual quality; given the resource limitations arising from operational constraints such as memory and complexity. The research in this thesis has focused on optimising the performance of the H.264/AVC video encoder, a process that involved finding solutions for multiple conflicting objectives. As part of this research, an automated tool for optimising video compression to achieve an optimal trade-off between bit rate and visual quality, given maximum allowed memory and computational complexity constraints, within a diverse range of scene environments, has been developed. Moreover, the evaluation of this optimisation framework has highlighted the effectiveness of the developed solution

The main results of this work are the development of novel algorithms with state-of-the-art performance, high capacity and transparency for image data hiding and robustness, high capacity and low distortion for audio watermarking.En esta tesis se estudian y proponen diversos métodos de data hiding de imágenes y watermarking de audio de alta capacidad. Los principales resultados de este trabajo consisten en la publicación de varios algoritmos novedosos con rendimiento a la altura de los mejores métodos del estado del arte, alta capacidad y transparencia, en el caso de data hiding de imágenes, y robustez, alta capacidad y baja distorsión para el watermarking de audio.En aquesta tesi s'estudien i es proposen diversos mètodes de data hiding d'imatges i watermarking d'àudio d'alta capacitat.     Routine tests for both planning and evaluating image quality in tele-echocardiography

    Both in real-time and "store & forward" tele-echocardiography (T-E), a coding process has to be applied to the echocardiography videoclips in order to limit the bandwidth needed and adapt it to the bandwidths furnished by network providers. The compression process degrades the videoclips, affecting thus the quality of the videoclips and potentially compromising the diagnostic accuracy of the T-E. In this work the authors investigated on the use of automatic tools for the video quality assessment by means of objective methods with particular care to the role of the system administrator. As the use of tests on video quality assessment (based on subjective methods) is hampered by the high number of needed resources (persons, laboratories and time). The use of valid objective methods is thus desirable. The study reviewed different tools with this specific aim. One of the more suitable tool was found to be represented by a software package designed by the Institute of Telecommunication Sciences and the National Telecommunication and Information Administration, the NTIA/ITS VQM tool. This tool gives back objective-quantitative data as outcomes, however embeds models emulating the subjective perception. This study reviewed and analyzed in depth the functionalities of the tool to improve the image quality in TE over the network. The tool was also found suitable for a more general process of T-E assessment, from a health technology assessment (HTA) perspective

    A QoE adaptive management system for high definition video streaming over wireless networks

    [EN] The development of the smart devices had led to demanding high-quality streaming videos over wireless communications. In Multimedia technology, the Ultra-High Definition (UHD) video quality has an important role due to the smart devices that are capable of capturing and processing high-quality video content. Since delivery of the high-quality video stream over the wireless networks adds challenges to the end-users, the network behaviors 'factors such as delay of arriving packets, delay variation between packets, and packet loss, are impacted on the Quality of Experience (QoE). Moreover, the characteristics of the video and the devices are other impacts, which influenced by the QoE. In this research work, the influence of the involved parameters is studied based on characteristics of the video, wireless channel capacity, and receivers' aspects, which collapse the QoE. Then, the impact of the aforementioned parameters on both subjective and objective QoE is studied. A smart algorithm for video stream services is proposed to optimize assessing and managing the QoE of clients (end-users). The proposed algorithm includes two approaches: first, using the machine-learning model to predict QoE. Second, according to the QoE prediction, the algorithm manages the video quality of the end-users by offering better video quality.     Data hiding in multimedia - theory and applications

    Multimedia data hiding or steganography is a means of communication using subliminal channels. The resource for the subliminal communication scheme is the distortion of the original content that can be tolerated. This thesis addresses two main issues of steganographic communication schemes: 1. How does one maximize the distortion introduced without affecting fidelity of the content? 2. How does one efficiently utilize the resource (the distortion introduced) for communicating as many bits of information as possible? In other words, what is a good signaling strategy for the subliminal communication scheme? Close to optimal solutions for both issues are analyzed. Many techniques for the issue for maximizing the resource, viz, the distortion introduced imperceptibly in images and video frames, are proposed. Different signaling strategies for steganographic communication are explored, and a novel signaling technique employing a floating signal constellation is proposed. Algorithms for optimal choices of the parameters of the signaling technique are presented. Other application specific issues like the type of robustness needed are taken into consideration along with the established theoretical background to design optimal data hiding schemes. In particular, two very important applications of data hiding are addressed - data hiding for multimedia content delivery, and data hiding for watermarking (for proving ownership).     Compression and Subjective Quality Assessment of 3D Video

    In recent years, three-dimensional television (3D TV) has been broadly considered as the successor to the existing traditional two-dimensional television (2D TV) sets. With its capability of offering a dynamic and immersive experience, 3D video (3DV) is expected to expand conventional video in several applications in the near future. However, 3D content requires more than a single view to deliver the depth sensation to the viewers and this, inevitably, increases the bitrate compared to the corresponding 2D content. This need drives the research trend in video compression field towards more advanced and more efficient algorithms. Currently, the Advanced Video Coding (H.264/AVC) is the state-of-the-art video coding standard which has been developed by the Joint Video Team of ISO/IEC MPEG and ITU-T VCEG. This codec has been widely adopted in various applications and products such as TV broadcasting, video conferencing, mobile TV, and blue-ray disc. One important extension of H.264/AVC, namely Multiview Video Coding (MVC) was an attempt to multiple view compression by taking into consideration the inter-view dependency between different views of the same scene. This codec H.264/AVC with its MVC extension (H.264/MVC) can be used for encoding either conventional stereoscopic video, including only two views, or multiview video, including more than two views. In spite of the high performance of H.264/MVC, a typical multiview video sequence requires a huge amount of storage space, which is proportional to the number of offered views. The available views are still limited and the research has been devoted to synthesizing an arbitrary number of views using the multiview video and depth map (MVD). This process is mandatory for auto-stereoscopic displays (ASDs) where many views are required at the viewer side and there is no way to transmit such a relatively huge number of views with currently available broadcasting technology. Therefore, to satisfy the growing hunger for 3D related applications, it is mandatory to further decrease the bitstream by introducing new and more efficient algorithms for compressing multiview video and depth maps. This thesis tackles the 3D content compression targeting different formats i.e. stereoscopic video and depth-enhanced multiview video. Stereoscopic video compression algorithms introduced in this thesis mostly focus on proposing different types of asymmetry between the left and right views. This means reducing the quality of one view compared to the other view aiming to achieve a better subjective quality against the symmetric case (the reference) and under the same bitrate constraint. The proposed algorithms to optimize depth-enhanced multiview video compression include both texture compression schemes as well as depth map coding tools. Some of the introduced coding schemes proposed for this format include asymmetric quality between the views. Knowing that objective metrics are not able to accurately estimate the subjective quality of stereoscopic content, it is suggested to perform subjective quality assessment to evaluate different codecs. Moreover, when the concept of asymmetry is introduced, the Human Visual System (HVS) performs a fusion process which is not completely understood. Therefore, another important aspect of this thesis is conducting several subjective tests and reporting the subjective ratings to evaluate the perceived quality of the proposed coded content against the references. Statistical analysis is carried out in the thesis to assess the validity of the subjective ratings and determine the best performing test cases
