    BlogForever D2.6: Data Extraction Methodology

    This report outlines an inquiry into the area of web data extraction, conducted within the context of blog preservation. The report reviews theoretical advances and practical developments for implementing data extraction. The inquiry is extended through an experiment that demonstrates the effectiveness and feasibility of implementing some of the suggested approaches. More specifically, the report discusses an approach based on unsupervised machine learning that employs the RSS feeds and HTML representations of blogs. It outlines the possibilities of extracting semantics available in blogs and demonstrates the benefits of exploiting available standards such as microformats and microdata. The report proceeds to propose a methodology for extracting and processing blog data to further inform the design and development of the BlogForever platform

    Do peers see more in a paper than its authors?

    Recent years have shown a gradual shift in the content of biomedical publications that is freely accessible, from titles and abstracts to full text. This has enabled new forms of automatic text analysis and has given rise to some interesting questions: How informative is the abstract compared to the full-text? What important information in the full-text is not present in the abstract? What should a good summary contain that is not already in the abstract? Do authors and peers see an article differently? We answer these questions by comparing the information content of the abstract to that in citances-sentences containing citations to that article. We contrast the important points of an article as judged by its authors versus as seen by peers. Focusing on the area of molecular interactions, we perform manual and automatic analysis, and we find that the set of all citances to a target article not only covers most information (entities, functions, experimental methods, and other biological concepts) found in its abstract, but also contains 20% more concepts. We further present a detailed summary of the differences across information types, and we examine the effects other citations and time have on the content of citances

    Improving Retrieval Accuracy in Main Content Extraction from HTML Web Documents

    The rapid growth of text based information on the World Wide Web and various applications making use of this data motivates the need for efficient and effective methods to identify and separate the “main content” from the additional content items, such as navigation menus, advertisements, design elements or legal disclaimers. Firstly, in this thesis, we study, develop, and evaluate R2L, DANA, DANAg, and AdDANAg, a family of novel algorithms for extracting the main content of web documents. The main concept behind R2L, which also provided the initial idea and motivation for the other three algorithms, is to use well particularities of Right-to-Left languages for obtaining the main content of web pages. As the English character set and the Right-to-Left character set are encoded in different intervals of the Unicode character set, we can efficiently distinguish the Right-to-Left characters from the English ones in an HTML file. This enables the R2L approach to recognize areas of the HTML file with a high density of Right-to-Left characters and a low density of characters from the English character set. Having recognized these areas, R2L can successfully separate only the Right-to-Left characters. The first extension of the R2L, DANA, improves effectiveness of the baseline algorithm by employing an HTML parser in a post processing phase of R2L for extracting the main content from areas with a high density of Right-to-Left characters. DANAg is the second extension of the R2L and generalizes the idea of R2L to render it language independent. AdDANAg, the third extension of R2L, integrates a new preprocessing step to normalize the hyperlink tags. The presented approaches are analyzed under the aspects of efficiency and effectiveness. We compare them to several established main content extraction algorithms and show that we extend the state-of-the-art in terms of both, efficiency and effectiveness. Secondly, automatically extracting the headline of web articles has many applications. We develop and evaluate a content-based and language-independent approach, TitleFinder, for unsupervised extraction of the headline of web articles. The proposed method achieves high performance in terms of effectiveness and efficiency and outperforms approaches operating on structural and visual features.Das rasante Wachstum von textbasierten Informationen im World Wide Web und die Vielfalt der Anwendungen, die diese Daten nutzen, macht es notwendig, effiziente und effektive Methoden zu entwickeln, die den Hauptinhalt identifizieren und von den zusätzlichen Inhaltsobjekten wie z.B. Navigations-Menüs, Anzeigen, Design-Elementen oder Haftungsausschlüssen trennen. Zunächst untersuchen, entwickeln und evaluieren wir in dieser Arbeit R2L, DANA, DANAg und AdDANAg, eine Familie von neuartigen Algorithmen zum Extrahieren des Inhalts von Web-Dokumenten. Das grundlegende Konzept hinter R2L, das auch zur Entwicklung der drei weiteren Algorithmen führte, nutzt die Besonderheiten der Rechts-nach-links-Sprachen aus, um den Hauptinhalt von Webseiten zu extrahieren. Da der lateinische Zeichensatz und die Rechts-nach-links-Zeichensätze durch verschiedene Abschnitte des Unicode-Zeichensatzes kodiert werden, lassen sich die Rechts-nach-links-Zeichen leicht von den lateinischen Zeichen in einer HTML-Datei unterscheiden. Das erlaubt dem R2L-Ansatz, Bereiche mit einer hohen Dichte von Rechts-nach-links-Zeichen und wenigen lateinischen Zeichen aus einer HTML-Datei zu erkennen. Aus diesen Bereichen kann dann R2L die Rechts-nach-links-Zeichen extrahieren. Die erste Erweiterung, DANA, verbessert die Wirksamkeit des Baseline-Algorithmus durch die Verwendung eines HTML-Parsers in der Nachbearbeitungsphase des R2L-Algorithmus, um den Inhalt aus Bereichen mit einer hohen Dichte von Rechts-nach-links-Zeichen zu extrahieren. DANAg erweitert den Ansatz des R2L-Algorithmus, so dass eine Sprachunabhängigkeit erreicht wird. Die dritte Erweiterung, AdDANAg, integriert eine neue Vorverarbeitungsschritte, um u.a. die Weblinks zu normalisieren. Die vorgestellten Ansätze werden in Bezug auf Effizienz und Effektivität analysiert. Im Vergleich mit mehreren etablierten Hauptinhalt-Extraktions-Algorithmen zeigen wir, dass sie in diesen Punkten überlegen sind. Darüber hinaus findet die Extraktion der Überschriften aus Web-Artikeln vielfältige Anwendungen. Hierzu entwickeln wir mit TitleFinder einen sich nur auf den Textinhalt beziehenden und sprachabhängigen Ansatz. Das vorgestellte Verfahren ist in Bezug auf Effektivität und Effizienz besser als bekannte Ansätze, die auf strukturellen und visuellen Eigenschaften der HTML-Datei beruhen

    Events are frequently discussed in natural language, and their accurate identification is central to language understanding. Yet they are diverse and complex in ontology and reference; computational processing hence proves challenging. News provides a shared basis for communication by reporting events. We perform several studies into news event reference. One annotation study characterises each news report in terms of its update and topic events, but finds that topic is better consider through explicit references to background events. In this context, we propose the event linking task which—analogous to named entity linking or disambiguation—models the grounding of references to notable events. It defines the disambiguation of an event reference as a link to the archival article that first reports it. When two references are linked to the same article, they need not be references to the same event. Event linking hopes to provide an intuitive approximation to coreference, erring on the side of over-generation in contrast with the literature. The task is also distinguished in considering event references from multiple perspectives over time. We diagnostically evaluate the task by first linking references to past, newsworthy events in news and opinion pieces to an archive of the Sydney Morning Herald. The intensive annotation results in only a small corpus of 229 distinct links. However, we observe that a number of hyperlinks targeting online news correspond to event links. We thus acquire two large corpora of hyperlinks at very low cost. From these we learn weights for temporal and term overlap features in a retrieval system. These noisy data lead to significant performance gains over a bag-of-words baseline. While our initial system can accurately predict many event links, most will require deep linguistic processing for their disambiguation

    Towards Comparative Web Content Mining using Object Oriented Model

    Web content data are heterogeneous in nature; usually composed of different types of contents and data structure. Thus, extraction and mining of web content data is a challenging branch of data mining. Traditional web content extraction and mining techniques are classified into three categories: programming language based wrappers, wrapper (data extraction program) induction techniques, and automatic wrapper generation techniques. First category constructs data extraction system by providing some specialized pattern specification languages, second category is a supervised learning, which learns data extraction rules and third category is automatic extraction process. All these data extraction techniques rely on web document presentation structures, which need complicated matching and tree alignment algorithms, routine maintenance, hard to unify for vast variety of websites and fail to catch heterogeneous data together. To catch more diversity of web documents, a feasible implementation of an automatic data extraction technique based on object oriented data model technique, 00Web, had been proposed in Annoni and Ezeife (2009). This thesis implements, materializes and extends the structured automatic data extraction technique. We developed a system (called WebOMiner) for extraction and mining of structured web contents based on object-oriented data model. Thesis extends the extraction algorithms proposed by Annoni and Ezeife (2009) and develops an automata based automatic wrapper generation algorithm for extraction and mining of structured web content data. Our algorithm identifies data blocks from flat array data structure and generates Non-Deterministic Finite Automata (NFA) pattern for different types of content data for extraction. Objective of this thesis is to extract and mine heterogeneous web content and relieve the hard effort of matching, tree alignment and routine maintenance. Experimental results show that our system is highly effective and it performs the mining task with 100% precision and 96.22% recall value
