First detection in gamma-rays of a young radio galaxy: Fermi-LAT observations of the Compact Symmetric Object PKS 1718-649

We report the Îł\gamma-ray detection of a young radio galaxy, PKS 1718−-649, belonging to the class of Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs), with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the {\it Fermi} satellite. The third {\it Fermi} Gamma-ray LAT catalog (3FGL) includes an unassociated Îł\gamma-ray source, 3FGL J1728.0−-6446, located close to PKS 1718−-649. Using the latest Pass 8 calibration, we confirm that the best fit 1σ1 \sigma position of the Îł\gamma-ray source is compatible with the radio location of PKS 1718−-649. Cross-matching of the Îł\gamma-ray source position with the positions of blazar sources from several catalogs yields negative results. Thus, we conclude that PKS 1718−-649 is the most likely counterpart to the unassociated LAT source. We obtain a detection test statistics TS∌36\sim 36 (>>5σ\sigma) with a best fit photon spectral index Γ=\Gamma=2.9±\pm0.3 and a 0.1-100 GeV photon flux density F0.1−100GeV=F_{\rm 0.1-100GeV}=(11.5±\pm0.3)×10−9\times{\rm 10^{-9}} ph cm−2^{-2} s−1^{-1}. We argue that the linear size (∌\sim2 pc), the kinematic age (∌\sim100 years), and the source distance (z=0.014z=0.014) make PKS 1718−-649 an ideal candidate for Îł\gamma-ray detection in the framework of the model proposing that the most compact and the youngest CSOs can efficiently produce GeV radiation via inverse-Compton scattering of the ambient photon fields by the radio lobe non-thermal electrons. Thus, our detection of the source in Îł\gamma-rays establishes young radio galaxies as a distinct class of extragalactic high-energy emitters, and yields an unique insight on the physical conditions in compact radio lobes interacting with the interstellar medium of the host galaxy.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

The Court affirmed the district court’s order granting the motion to dismiss and determined that deed of trust trustees engaged in nonjudicial foreclosure would not be required to be licensed. The Court settled the conflicting provisions of NRS 107 governing the nonjudicial foreclosure process and NRS 649 governing agencies engaged in debt collection in Nevada by determining the comprehensive and specific scheme of NRS 107 for deed of trust trustees exercised authority over the generalized nature of NRS 649 governing debt collecting agency licensing requirements for nonjudicial foreclosures. Therefore, under NRS 107 deed of trust trustees are not required to be licensed for nonjudicial foreclosures

Vapor–Liquid Equilibria of Nitrogen + Diethyl Ether and Nitrogen + 1,1,1,2,2,4,5,5,5-Nonafluoro-4-(trifluoromethyl)-3-pentanone by Experiment, Peng–Robinson and PC-SAFT Equations of State

The saturated liquid line of the systems nitrogen (N2) + diethyl ether and N2 + 1,1,1,2,2,4,5,5,5-nonafluoro-4-(trifluoromethyl)-3-pentanone (Novec 649) is measured along three isotherms, that is, 390, 420, and 450 K and 360, 390, and 420 K, respectively. The employed gas solubility apparatus, based on the synthetic method, allows to measure points up to the critical region of these mixtures. The experimental data are used to correlate the Peng–Robinson and PC-SAFT equations of state (EOS). For the parametrization of the system, N2 + diethyl ether the Peng–Robinson EOS is combined with the Huron–Vidal mixing rule and the non-random two-liquid (NRTL) excess Gibbs energy model; for the system N2 + Novec 649 the quadratic mixing rule is used

A new “Romen” Empire : Toni Morrison's love and the classics

    Get PDF
An important but little-studied feature of Toni Morrison's novels is their ambivalent relationship with classical tradition. Morrison was a classics minor while at Howard University, and her deployment of the cultural practices of ancient Greece and Rome is fundamental to her radical project. Indeed, the works' revisionary classicism extends far beyond the scope of established criticism, which has largely confined itself to the engagement with Greek tragedy in Beloved, with the Demeter/Kore myth in The Bluest Eye and with allusions to Oedipus and Odysseus in Song of Solomon.1 Morrison repeatedly subverts the central role that Greece and Rome have played in American self-definition and historiography. In Paradise, for example, the affinity between the Oven in Ruby and the Greek koine hestia or communal hearth critiques the historical Founding Fathers' insistence on their new nation's analogical relationship with the ancient republics. And in their densely allusive rewritings of slavery, the Civil War and its aftermath, Beloved and Jazz expose the dependence of the “Old South” on classical pastoral tradition. It should come as no surprise, therefore, that in her most recent novel – Love (2003) – Morrison further develops the transformative engagement with America's Graeco-Roman inheritance that characterizes all of her previous fiction

Assessment of Organic Fertilizer Usage by Garden Egg Farmers in Enugu State, Nigeria

    Get PDF
The study was undertaken to assess organic fertilizer usage by garden egg farmers in Enugu State, Nigeria. The multistage sampling technique was used to select 80 garden egg farmers. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis were used to analyse data for the study. The mean age of respondents was 39 years. Fifty-five percent (55 %) of respondents were married. The majority (97.5 %) of the respondents used farmyard manure while the average cost of organic fertilizer was N57372.73. A lesser percentage (7.5 %) of respondents in the study applied over 2000 kg of organic fertilizer per hectare with 40 % applying twice per season. The perceived benefit of organic fertilizer was: improvement of soil fertility (2.95 ± 1.12), environment-friendly (2.99 ± 1.23). A constraint identified in the use of organic fertilizer was: slow effect (2.12 ± 1.43), Odorous nature (2.06 ± 1.28) and difficulty in the collection and handling of organic fertilizer (2.72 ± 1.03). The study among other things recommends that farmers be granted credits and extension services that will teach them the required skills in the handling and use of organic fertilizer

Determination of activation volumes of reversal in perpendicular media

    Get PDF
We discuss a method for the determination of activation volumes of reversal in perpendicular media. This method does not require correction for the self-demagnetizing field normally associated with these media. This is achieved by performing time dependence measurements at a constant level of magnetization. From the difference in time taken for the magnetization to decay to a fixed value at two fields-separated by a small increment DeltaH, the activation volume can be determined. We report data for both CoCrPt alloy films and a multilayer film, typical of those materials under consideration for use as perpendicular media. We find activation volumes that are consistent with the hysteresis curves of the materials. The activation volume scales qualitatively with the exchange coupling. The alloy films have significantly lower activation volumes, implying that they would be capable of supporting a higher data density
