    A holistic multi-scale approach to using 3D scanning technology in accident reconstruction

    Three-dimensional scanning and documentation methods are becoming increasingly employed by law enforcement personnel for crime scene and accident scene recording. Three-dimensional documentation of the victim’s body in such cases is also increasingly used as the field of forensic radiology and imaging is expanding rapidly. These scanning technologies enable a more complete and detailed documentation than standard autopsy. This was used to examine a fatal pedestrian-vehicle collision where the pedestrian was killed by a van whilst crossing the road. Two competing scenarios were considered for the vehicle speed calculation: the pedestrian being projected forward by the impact or the pedestrian being carried on the vehicle’s bonnet. In order to assist with this, the impact area of the accident vehicle was scanned using laser surface scanning, the victim was scanned using postmortem CT and micro-CT and the data sets were combined to virtually match features of the vehicle to injuries on the victim. Micro-CT revealed additional injuries not previously detected, lending support to the pedestrian-carry theory

    The use of 3D scanning systems is becoming increasingly popular and an essential tool for manufacturers for inspection and measurement. With such systems being utilised on the manufacturing shop floor due to their portability and ease of use, it is no doubt that such systems are designed to address a variety of users whom, with minimal training can operate the equipment. Due to continuing demands of high-quality products there is the need for manufacturers of 3D scanning systems to develop technologies that deliver fast and accurate information. However, one of the key challenges lies not in the training of people to use the equipment, but to develop engineers who can produce traceable, accurate and precise results with a declared statement of confidence quantifying the quality of the measurement. This statement of the quality of the output results relies on employing a set of workflow actions that involve planning, capture, processing and analysis, and finally output.     Tato práce se v první části zabývá rozdělením 3D skenerů, vysvětluje některé principy jejich fungování. V druhé části jsou podrobněji rozebrány některé metody, konkrétně jsou to 3D skenování za pomocí laserové technologie a 3D skenování využívající strukturované světlo. U obou těchto metod je popsán postup procesu měření a jsou srovnány některé komerčně dostupné skenery. V závěru jsou tyto dvě metody porovnány.In the first part of this thesis there is a task of taxonomy of the 3D scanners. It explains some principles of the 3D scanners functioning. Then in the second part there are described two particular technologies of the 3D scanning in the more complex way. In the chapters of both of these methods there is described procedure of scanning and compared several commercially available sensors. In the end there is comparison of these two methods.

    3D Scanning System for Automatic High-Resolution Plant Phenotyping

    Thin leaves, fine stems, self-occlusion, non-rigid and slowly changing structures make plants difficult for three-dimensional (3D) scanning and reconstruction -- two critical steps in automated visual phenotyping. Many current solutions such as laser scanning, structured light, and multiview stereo can struggle to acquire usable 3D models because of limitations in scanning resolution and calibration accuracy. In response, we have developed a fast, low-cost, 3D scanning platform to image plants on a rotating stage with two tilting DSLR cameras centred on the plant. This uses new methods of camera calibration and background removal to achieve high-accuracy 3D reconstruction. We assessed the system's accuracy using a 3D visual hull reconstruction algorithm applied on 2 plastic models of dicotyledonous plants, 2 sorghum plants and 2 wheat plants across different sets of tilt angles. Scan times ranged from 3 minutes (to capture 72 images using 2 tilt angles), to 30 minutes (to capture 360 images using 10 tilt angles). The leaf lengths, widths, areas and perimeters of the plastic models were measured manually and compared to measurements from the scanning system: results were within 3-4% of each other. The 3D reconstructions obtained with the scanning system show excellent geometric agreement with all six plant specimens, even plants with thin leaves and fine stems.Comment: 8 papes, DICTA 201

    3D scanning of cultural heritage with consumer depth cameras

    Three dimensional reconstruction of cultural heritage objects is an expensive and time-consuming process. Recent consumer real-time depth acquisition devices, like Microsoft Kinect, allow very fast and simple acquisition of 3D views. However 3D scanning with such devices is a challenging task due to the limited accuracy and reliability of the acquired data. This paper introduces a 3D reconstruction pipeline suited to use consumer depth cameras as hand-held scanners for cultural heritage objects. Several new contributions have been made to achieve this result. They include an ad-hoc filtering scheme that exploits the model of the error on the acquired data and a novel algorithm for the extraction of salient points exploiting both depth and color data. Then the salient points are used within a modified version of the ICP algorithm that exploits both geometry and color distances to precisely align the views even when geometry information is not sufficient to constrain the registration. The proposed method, although applicable to generic scenes, has been tuned to the acquisition of sculptures and in this connection its performance is rather interesting as the experimental results indicate

The project solutions recommended in this report offers impartial product information on the current appropriate 3D scanning technology that potentially could improve efficiency of data capturing, design and manufacture of interior and exterior spaces, boats, vehicles and other similar constructions for creating and installing flexible coverings and indoor and outdoor structures
