    Interactive Visual Analytics for Large-scale Particle Simulations

    Particle based model simulations are widely used in scientific visualization. In cosmology, particles are used to simulate the evolution of dark matter in the universe. Clusters of particles (that have special statistical properties) are called halos. From a visualization point of view, halos are clusters of particles, each having a position, mass and velocity in three dimensional space, and they can be represented as point clouds that contain various structures of geometric interest such as filaments, membranes, satellite of points, clusters, and cluster of clusters. The thesis investigates methods for interacting with large scale data-sets represented as point clouds. The work mostly aims at the interactive visualization of cosmological simulation based on large particle systems. The study consists of three components: a) two human factors experiments into the perceptual factors that make it possible to see features in point clouds; b) the design and implementation of a user interface making it possible to rapidly navigate through and visualize features in the point cloud, c) software development and integration to support visualization

    The document presents a numerical model of rocks and soils using spherical Discrete Elements, also called Distinct Elements. The motion of spherical elements is described by means of equations of rigid body dynamics. Explicit integration in time yields high computational efficiency. Spherical elements interact among one another with contact forces, both in normal and tangential directions. Efficient contact search scheme based on the octree structures has been implemented. Special constitutive model of contact interface taking into account cohesion forces allows us to model fracture and decohesion of materials. Numerical simulation predicts wear of rock cutting tools. The developed numerical algorithm of wear evaluation allows us us to predict evolution of the shape of the tool caused by wear. Results of numerical simulation are validated by comparison with experimental data.Postprint (published version

    Highly Parallel Geometric Characterization and Visualization of Volumetric Data Sets

    Volumetric 3D data sets are being generated in many different application areas. Some examples are CAT scans and MRI data, 3D models of protein molecules represented by implicit surfaces, multi-dimensional numeric simulations of plasma turbulence, and stacks of confocal microscopy images of cells. The size of these data sets has been increasing, requiring the speed of analysis and visualization techniques to also increase to keep up. Recent advances in processor technology have stopped increasing clock speed and instead begun increasing parallelism, resulting in multi-core CPUS and many-core GPUs. To take advantage of these new parallel architectures, algorithms must be explicitly written to exploit parallelism. In this thesis we describe several algorithms and techniques for volumetric data set analysis and visualization that are amenable to these modern parallel architectures. We first discuss modeling volumetric data with Gaussian Radial Basis Functions (RBFs). RBF representation of a data set has several advantages, including lossy compression, analytic differentiability, and analytic application of Gaussian blur. We also describe a parallel volume rendering algorithm that can create images of the data directly from the RBF representation. Next we discuss a parallel, stochastic algorithm for measuring the surface area of volumetric representations of molecules. The algorithm is suitable for implementation on a GPU and is also progressive, allowing it to return a rough answer almost immediately and refine the answer over time to the desired level of accuracy. After this we discuss the concept of Confluent Visualization, which allows the visualization of the interaction between a pair of volumetric data sets. The interaction is visualized through volume rendering, which is well suited to implementation on parallel architectures. Finally we discuss a parallel, stochastic algorithm for classifying stem cells as having been grown on a surface that induces differentiation or on a surface that does not induce differentiation. The algorithm takes as input 3D volumetric models of the cells generated from confocal microscopy. This algorithm builds on our algorithm for surface area measurement and, like that algorithm, this algorithm is also suitable for implementation on a GPU and is progressive

    A Multiple Level-of-Detail 3D Data Transmission Approach for Low-Latency Remote Visualisation in Teleoperation Tasks

Advances in the development of highly accurate 3D cameras able to provide high-quality point clouds appear to be a feasible solution for generating live, up-to-date virtual environments. Unfortunately, the exceptional accuracy and high density of these data represent a burden for communications requiring a large bandwidth affecting setups where the local and remote systems are particularly geographically distant. This paper presents a multiple level-of-detail (LoD) compression strategy for 3D data based on tree-like codification structures capable of compressing a single data frame at multiple resolutions using dynamically configured parameters. The level of compression (resolution) of objects is prioritised based on: (i) placement on the scene; and (ii) the type of object. For the former, classical point cloud fitting and segmentation techniques are implemented; for the latter, user-defined prioritisation is considered. The results obtained are compared using a single LoD (whole-scene) compression technique previously proposed by the authors. Results showed a considerable improvement to the transmitted data size and updated frame rate while maintaining low distortion after decompression

    QuadStack: An Efficient Representation and Direct Rendering of Layered Datasets

    We introduce QuadStack, a novel algorithm for volumetric data compression and direct rendering. Our algorithm exploits the data redundancy often found in layered datasets which are common in science and engineering fields such as geology, biology, mechanical engineering, medicine, etc. QuadStack first compresses the volumetric data into vertical stacks which are then compressed into a quadtree that identifies and represents the layered structures at the internal nodes. The associated data (color, material, density, etc.) and shape of these layer structures are decoupled and encoded independently, leading to high compression rates (4× to 54× of the original voxel model memory footprint in our experiments). We also introduce an algorithm for value retrieving from the QuadStack representation and we show that the access has logarithmic complexity. Because of the fast access, QuadStack is suitable for efficient data representation and direct rendering. We show that our GPU implementation performs comparably in speed with the state-of-the-art algorithms (18-79 MRays/s in our implementation), while maintaining a significantly smaller memory footprint

    Numerical modelling of additive manufacturing process for stainless steel tension testing samples

    Nowadays additive manufacturing (AM) technologies including 3D printing grow rapidly and they are expected to replace conventional subtractive manufacturing technologies to some extents. During a selective laser melting (SLM) process as one of popular AM technologies for metals, large amount of heats is required to melt metal powders, and this leads to distortions and/or shrinkages of additively manufactured parts. It is useful to predict the 3D printed parts to control unwanted distortions and shrinkages before their 3D printing. This study develops a two-phase numerical modelling and simulation process of AM process for 17-4PH stainless steel and it considers the importance of post-processing and the need for calibration to achieve a high-quality printing at the end. By using this proposed AM modelling and simulation process, optimal process parameters, material properties, and topology can be obtained to ensure a part 3D printed successfully
