High‐Voltage Aqueous Mg‐Ion Batteries Enabled by Solvation Structure Reorganization

    Get PDF
Herein, an eco-friendly and high safety aqueous Mg-ion electrolyte (AME) with a wide electrochemical stability window (ESW) ≈≈ 3.7 V, containing polyethylene glycol (PEG) and low-concentration salt (0.8 m Mg(TFSI)2_2), is proposed by solvation structure reorganization of AME. The PEG agent significantly alters the Mg2+^{2+} solvation and hydrogen bonds network of AMEs and forms the direct coordination of Mg2+^{2+} and TFSI-, thus enhancing the physicochemical and electrochemical properties of electrolytes. As an exemplary material, V2_2O5_5 nanowires are tested in this new AME and exhibit initial high discharge/charge capacity of 359/326 mAh g−1^{-1} and high capacity retention of 80% after 100 cycles. The high crystalline αα-V2_2O5_5 shows two 2-phase transition processes with the formation of ΔΔ-Mg0.6_{0.6}V2_2O5_5 and Mg-rich Mgx_xV2_2O5_5 (x ≈≈1.0) during the first discharge. Mg-rich Mgx_xV2_2O5_5 (x ≈≈ 1.0) phase formed through electrochemical Mg-ion intercalation at room temperature is for the first time observed via XRD. Meanwhile, the cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) in aqueous Mg-ion batteries is revealed for the first time. MgF2_2 originating from the decomposition of TFSI- is identified as the dominant component. This work offers a new approach for designing high-safety, low-cost, eco-friendly, and large ESW electrolytes for practical and novel aqueous multivalent batteries

Enhancing Graphical Model-Based System Design: An Avionics Case Study

    Get PDF
Graphical model-based system design is very appealing. However, there exist many different formalisms, with different semantics---as far as they do have well-defined semantics---and differing capabilities of the accompanying tools. In this paper, we present a case study from the avionics domain and report on the experiences in using different modeling languages and tools. The focus here is on the pragmatics of modeling, i. e., the practical process of building and inspecting graphical models. The underlying application is a high-lift ĂŻÂŹap system, which is highly safety-critical and served as a demonstrator within the Dependable Embedded Components and Systems (DECOS) project that explored the design of distributed dependable systems build on time-triggered architectures. Specifically, we compare a realization in the Safety Critical Application Development Environment (SCADE), a commercial tool from Esterel-Technologies, with a design in the Kiel Integrated Environment for Layout (KIEL), a research tool that allows to explore novel model handling paradigms. Hence we compare traditional graphical drag-and-drop WYSIWYG modeling with alternative, productivity enhancing approaches. We conclude with a brief outlook on future extensions which will tightly integrate with existing tools based on the Eclipse platform

Social Enterprise in Central and Eastern Europe

    Get PDF
In the last two decades, the quest for a widely accepted definition of social enterprise has been a central issue in a great number of publications. The main objective of the ICSEM Project (on which this book is based) was to show that the social enterprise field would benefit much more from linking conceptualisation efforts to the huge diversity of social enterprises than from an additional and ambitious attempt at providing an encompassing definition. Starting from a hypothesis that could be termed "the impossibility of a unified definition", the ICSEM research strategy relied on bottom-up approaches to capture the social enterprise phenomenon in its local and national contexts. This strategy made it possible to take into account and give legitimacy to locally embedded approaches, while simultaneously allowing for the identification of major social enterprise models to delineate the field on common grounds at the international level. Social Enterprise in Central and Eastern Europe – the last volume in a series of four ICSEM-based books on social enterprise worldwide — will serve as a key reference and resource for teachers, researchers, students, experts, policy makers, journalists and others who want to acquire a broad understanding of the social enterprise and social entrepreneurship phenomena as they emerge and develop in this region

Cascading effects from predator removal depend on resource availability in a benthic food web

    Get PDF
We tested joint effects of predator loss and increased resource availability on the grazers’ trophic level and the propagation of trophic interactions in a benthic food web by excluding larger predatory fish from cages and manipulating nutrients in the coastal zone of the Baltic Sea. The combination of nutrient enrichment and excluding larger predators induced an increase in medium-sized predatory fish (three-spined stickleback). The meso-predator fish in turn did not change the total abundance of the invertebrate herbivores, but did cause a substantial shift in their community composition towards the dominance of gastropods by reducing amphipods by 40–60%, while gastropods were left unchanged. The shift in grazer composition generated a 23 times higher producer biomass, but only under nutrient enrichment. Our results show that top-predator declines can substantially shift the species composition at the grazers’ level, but that cascading effects on producers by a trophic cascade strongly depend on resource availability

Modeling of failure probability for reliability and component reuse of electric and electronic equipment

    Get PDF
none2noRecently, the concept of "circular economy", the design for end-of-life, the problem of reduction of waste of electronic and electrical equipment are becoming more and more important. The design of electronic systems for end-of-life considers the possibility of their repair, reuse and recycle, in order to reduce waste. This work proposes a new accurate model of failure probability density, that includes the failure probability of a used component in new equipment. The model has been tested, in conjunction with the International Electrotechnical Commission and Telcordia standard, in real industrial production. Eight years of historical faults have been analyzed and used to derive the fault models of the components. The model and analysis have been used for the analysis of real electronic products. The reuse of components could make an improvement to the reliability of the equipment.openConti M.; Orcioni S.Conti, M.; Orcioni, S

From environmental to sustainability communication: Lessons learnt from the German craft sector

    Get PDF
In Germany, environmental communication is a topic for the chambers of crafts and its members for more than 20 years. During the 1990s, the Federal Association of Chambers of Crafts (ZDH) builds up ten environmental centers all over Germany for improving environmental knowledge of SMEs. Furthermore, 89 special programmes and 280 projects for the crafts were supported by several donor organisations like the German Environmental Foundation (DBU) until December 2004. This paper presents some results of our cross-sectoral evaluation study which had been finished last year. The focus is set on the development from environmental to sustainability communication within the craft sector, showing both chances and risks accompanied by this change. Moreover, our findings on the quality of communication management and our conclusions for steering communication processes with SMEs will be discussed. The guiding question is: what are the lessons learnt from environmental communication in the German craft sector and how can the acceptance and support for sustainability issues of SMEs be improved
