    Methodology for tidal turbine representation in ocean circulation model

    The present method proposes the use and adaptation of ocean circulation models as an assessment tool framework for tidal current turbine (TCT) array layout optimization. By adapting both momentum and turbulence transport equations of an existing model, the present TCT representation method is proposed to extend the actuator disc concept to 3-D large-scale ocean circulation models. Through the reproduction of experimental flume tests and grid dependency tests, this method has shown its numerical coherence as well as its ability to simulate accurately both momentum and turbulent turbine-induced perturbations in both near and far wakes in a relatively short period of computation time. Consequently the present TCT representation method is a very promising basis for the development of a TCT array layout optimization tool

    GEOSPATIAL-BASED ENVIRONMENTAL MODELLING FOR COASTAL DUNE ZONE MANAGEMENT

    Tomaintain biodiversity and ecological functionof coastal dune areas, itis important that practical and effective environmentalmanagemental strategies are developed. Advances in geospatial technologies offer a potentially very useful source of data for studies in this environment. This research project aimto developgeospatialdata-basedenvironmentalmodellingforcoastaldunecomplexestocontributetoeffectiveconservationstrategieswithparticularreferencetotheBuckroneydunecomplexinCo.Wicklow,Ireland.Theprojectconducteda general comparison ofdifferent geospatial data collection methodsfor topographic modelling of the Buckroney dune complex. These data collection methodsincludedsmall-scale survey data from aerial photogrammetry, optical satellite imagery, radar and LiDAR data, and ground-based, large-scale survey data from Total Station(TS), Real Time Kinematic (RTK) Global Positioning System(GPS), terrestrial laser scanners (TLS) and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS).The results identifiedthe advantages and disadvantages of the respective technologies and demonstrated thatspatial data from high-end methods based on LiDAR, TLS and UAS technologiesenabled high-resolution and high-accuracy 3D datasetto be gathered quickly and relatively easily for the Buckroney dune complex. Analysis of the 3D topographic modelling based on LiDAR, TLS and UAS technologieshighlighted the efficacy of UAS technology, in particular,for 3D topographicmodellingof the study site.Theproject then exploredthe application of a UAS-mounted multispectral sensor for 3D vegetation mappingof the site. The Sequoia multispectral sensorused in this researchhas green, red, red-edge and near-infrared(NIR)wavebands, and a normal RGB sensor. The outcomesincludedan orthomosiac model, a 3D surface model and multispectral imageryof the study site. Nineclassification strategies were usedto examine the efficacyof UAS-IVmounted multispectral data for vegetation mapping. These strategies involved different band combinations based on the three multispectral bands from the RGB sensor, the four multispectral bands from the multispectral sensor and sixwidely used vegetation indices. There were 235 sample areas (1 m × 1 m) used for anaccuracy assessment of the classification of thevegetation mapping. The results showed vegetation type classification accuracies ranging from 52% to 75%. The resultdemonstrated that the addition of UAS-mounted multispectral data improvedthe classification accuracy of coastal vegetation mapping of the Buckroney dune complex

    Too much of a good thing? The role of detailed UAV imagery in characterising large-scale badland drainage characteristics in South-eastern Spain

    Some arid and semi-arid areas experience high erosion rates as a consequence of their geological and climatic conditions. This can lead to the development of badland environments characterized by very high drainage densities and the occurrence of a range of distinctive landforms indicative of fluvial dissection. These occur along a spectrum of scales and vary from small-scale arroyos or ramblas to large-scale rills and gullies. Drainage networks comprising the larger landforms can be easily identified using traditional remote-sensing methods, such as satellite or aerial imagery, and are therefore amenable to morphometric analyses. The smaller landforms however are not so easily detected. As a result, studies to date have been largely restricted to their direct field observation which is problematic due to their inherent inaccessibility, often on steep, unstable slopes. However, with the advent and popularization of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, those landforms and geomorphological characteristics, which were once invisible to remotely-sensed aerial data can be incorporated into more detailed research. By using one of the most extensively studied badland locations in Europe – the Tabernas Desert in South-Eastern Spain – this article describes the characterization of a large-scale drainage basin (294 m2) using high definition orthophotography and digital elevation model collected from an unmanned rotorcraft and processed using structure from motion software. Results provide an extremely detailed three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the study site, and solve one of the inherent issues working with such large scales, namely the significant difference between 2D and 3D measurements. The article concludes by comparing the results obtained with the UAV with those obtained using existing remotely-sensed imagery and by exploring the challenges experienced when working with bespoke high-resolution aerial imagery, such as when too much detail becomes an issue, and the role of this increasing resolution of observation in geomorphological and hydrological analysis

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for monitoring soil erosion in Morocco

    This article presents an environmental remote sensing application using a UAV that is specifically aimed at reducing the data gap between field scale and satellite scale in soil erosion monitoring in Morocco. A fixed-wing aircraft type Sirius I (MAVinci, Germany) equipped with a digital system camera (Panasonic) is employed. UAV surveys are conducted over different study sites with varying extents and flying heights in order to provide both very high resolution site-specific data and lower-resolution overviews, thus fully exploiting the large potential of the chosen UAV for multi-scale mapping purposes. Depending on the scale and area coverage, two different approaches for georeferencing are used, based on high-precision GCPs or the UAV’s log file with exterior orientation values respectively. The photogrammetric image processing enables the creation of Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) and ortho-image mosaics with very high resolution on a sub-decimetre level. The created data products were used for quantifying gully and badland erosion in 2D and 3D as well as for the analysis of the surrounding areas and landscape development for larger extents

    Vegetation Dynamics in Ecuador

    Global forest cover has suffered a dramatic reduction during recent decades, especially in tropical regions, which is mainly due to human activities caused by enhanced population pressures. Nevertheless, forest ecosystems, especially tropical forests, play an important role in the carbon cycle functioning as carbon stocks and sinks, which is why conservation strategies are of utmost importance respective to ongoing global warming. In South America the highest deforestation rates are observed in Ecuador, but an operational surveillance system for continuous forest monitoring, along with the determination of deforestation rates and the estimation of actual carbon socks is still missing. Therefore, the present investigation provides a functional tool based on remote sensing data to monitor forest stands at local, regional and national scales. To evaluate forest cover and deforestation rates at country level satellite data was used, whereas LiDAR data was utilized to accurately estimate the Above Ground Biomass (AGB; carbon stocks) at catchment level. Furthermore, to provide a cost-effective tool for continuous forest monitoring of the most vulnerable parts, an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) was deployed and equipped with various sensors (RBG and multispectral camera). The results showed that in Ecuador total forest cover was reduced by about 24% during the last three decades. Moreover, deforestation rates have increased with the beginning of the new century, especially in the Andean Highland and the Amazon Basin, due to enhanced population pressures and the government supported oil and mining industries, besides illegal timber extractions. The AGB stock estimations at catchment level indicated that most of the carbon is stored in natural ecosystems (forest and pĂĄramo; AGB ~98%), whereas areas affected by anthropogenic land use changes (mostly pastureland) lost nearly all their storage capacities (AGB ~2%). Furthermore, the LiDAR data permitted the detection of the forest structure, and therefore the identification of the most vulnerable parts. To monitor these areas, it could be shown that UAVs are useful, particularly when equipped with an RGB camera (AGB correlation: RÂČ > 0.9), because multispectral images suffer saturation of the spectral bands over dense natural forest stands, which results in high overestimations. In summary, the developed operational surveillance systems respective to forest cover at different spatial scales can be implemented in Ecuador to promote conservation/ restoration strategies and to reduce the high deforestation rates. This may also mitigate future greenhouse gas emissions and guarantee functional ecosystem services for local and regional populations

    On the use of smartphones as novel photogrammetric water gauging instruments: Developing tools for crowdsourcing water levels

    The term global climate change is omnipresent since the beginning of the last decade. Changes in the global climate are associated with an increase in heavy rainfalls that can cause nearly unpredictable flash floods. Consequently, spatio-temporally high-resolution monitoring of rivers becomes increasingly important. Water gauging stations continuously and precisely measure water levels. However, they are rather expensive in purchase and maintenance and are preferably installed at water bodies relevant for water management. Small-scale catchments remain often ungauged. In order to increase the data density of hydrometric monitoring networks and thus to improve the prediction quality of flood events, new, flexible and cost-effective water level measurement technologies are required. They should be oriented towards the accuracy requirements of conventional measurement systems and facilitate the observation of water levels at virtually any time, even at the smallest rivers. A possible solution is the development of a photogrammetric smartphone application (app) for crowdsourcing water levels, which merely requires voluntary users to take pictures of a river section to determine the water level. Today’s smartphones integrate high-resolution cameras, a variety of sensors, powerful processors, and mass storage. However, they are designed for the mass market and use low-cost hardware that cannot comply with the quality of geodetic measurement technology. In order to investigate the potential for mobile measurement applications, research was conducted on the smartphone as a photogrammetric measurement instrument as part of the doctoral project. The studies deal with the geometric stability of smartphone cameras regarding device-internal temperature changes and with the accuracy potential of rotation parameters measured with smartphone sensors. The results show a high, temperature-related variability of the interior orientation parameters, which is why the calibration of the camera should be carried out during the immediate measurement. The results of the sensor investigations show considerable inaccuracies when measuring rotation parameters, especially the compass angle (errors up to 90° were observed). The same applies to position parameters measured by global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers built into smartphones. According to the literature, positional accuracies of about 5 m are possible in best conditions. Otherwise, errors of several 10 m are to be expected. As a result, direct georeferencing of image measurements using current smartphone technology should be discouraged. In consideration of the results, the water gauging app Open Water Levels (OWL) was developed, whose methodological development and implementation constituted the core of the thesis project. OWL enables the flexible measurement of water levels via crowdsourcing without requiring additional equipment or being limited to specific river sections. Data acquisition and processing take place directly in the field, so that the water level information is immediately available. In practice, the user captures a short time-lapse sequence of a river bank with OWL, which is used to calculate a spatio-temporal texture that enables the detection of the water line. In order to translate the image measurement into 3D object space, a synthetic, photo-realistic image of the situation is created from existing 3D data of the river section to be investigated. Necessary approximations of the image orientation parameters are measured by smartphone sensors and GNSS. The assignment of camera image and synthetic image allows for the determination of the interior and exterior orientation parameters by means of space resection and finally the transfer of the image-measured 2D water line into the 3D object space to derive the prevalent water level in the reference system of the 3D data. In comparison with conventionally measured water levels, OWL reveals an accuracy potential of 2 cm on average, provided that synthetic image and camera image exhibit consistent image contents and that the water line can be reliably detected. In the present dissertation, related geometric and radiometric problems are comprehensively discussed. Furthermore, possible solutions, based on advancing developments in smartphone technology and image processing as well as the increasing availability of 3D reference data, are presented in the synthesis of the work. The app Open Water Levels, which is currently available as a beta version and has been tested on selected devices, provides a basis, which, with continuous further development, aims to achieve a final release for crowdsourcing water levels towards the establishment of new and the expansion of existing monitoring networks.Der Begriff des globalen Klimawandels ist seit Beginn des letzten Jahrzehnts allgegenwĂ€rtig. Die VerĂ€nderung des Weltklimas ist mit einer Zunahme von Starkregenereignissen verbunden, die nahezu unvorhersehbare Sturzfluten verursachen können. Folglich gewinnt die raumzeitlich hochaufgelöste Überwachung von FließgewĂ€ssern zunehmend an Bedeutung. Pegelmessstationen erfassen kontinuierlich und prĂ€zise WasserstĂ€nde, sind jedoch in Anschaffung und Wartung sehr teuer und werden vorzugsweise an wasserwirtschaftlich-relevanten GewĂ€ssern installiert. Kleinere GewĂ€sser bleiben hĂ€ufig unbeobachtet. Um die Datendichte hydrometrischer Messnetze zu erhöhen und somit die VorhersagequalitĂ€t von Hochwasserereignissen zu verbessern, sind neue, kostengĂŒnstige und flexibel einsetzbare Wasserstandsmesstechnologien erforderlich. Diese sollten sich an den Genauigkeitsanforderungen konventioneller Messsysteme orientieren und die Beobachtung von WasserstĂ€nden zu praktisch jedem Zeitpunkt, selbst an den kleinsten FlĂŒssen, ermöglichen. Ein Lösungsvorschlag ist die Entwicklung einer photogrammetrischen Smartphone-Anwendung (App) zum Crowdsourcing von WasserstĂ€nden mit welcher freiwillige Nutzer lediglich Bilder eines Flussabschnitts aufnehmen mĂŒssen, um daraus den Wasserstand zu bestimmen. Heutige Smartphones integrieren hochauflösende Kameras, eine Vielzahl von Sensoren, leistungsfĂ€hige Prozessoren und Massenspeicher. Sie sind jedoch fĂŒr den Massenmarkt konzipiert und verwenden kostengĂŒnstige Hardware, die nicht der QualitĂ€t geodĂ€tischer Messtechnik entsprechen kann. Um das Einsatzpotential in mobilen Messanwendungen zu eruieren, sind Untersuchungen zum Smartphone als photogrammetrisches Messinstrument im Rahmen des Promotionsprojekts durchgefĂŒhrt worden. Die Studien befassen sich mit der geometrischen StabilitĂ€t von Smartphone-Kameras bezĂŒglich gerĂ€teinterner TemperaturĂ€nderungen und mit dem Genauigkeitspotential von mit Smartphone-Sensoren gemessenen Rotationsparametern. Die Ergebnisse zeigen eine starke, temperaturbedingte VariabilitĂ€t der inneren Orientierungsparameter, weshalb die Kalibrierung der Kamera zum unmittelbaren Messzeitpunkt erfolgen sollte. Die Ergebnisse der Sensoruntersuchungen zeigen große Ungenauigkeiten bei der Messung der Rotationsparameter, insbesondere des Kompasswinkels (Fehler von bis zu 90° festgestellt). Selbiges gilt auch fĂŒr Positionsparameter, gemessen durch in Smartphones eingebaute EmpfĂ€nger fĂŒr Signale globaler Navigationssatellitensysteme (GNSS). Wie aus der Literatur zu entnehmen ist, lassen sich unter besten Bedingungen Lagegenauigkeiten von etwa 5 m erreichen. Abseits davon sind Fehler von mehreren 10 m zu erwarten. Infolgedessen ist von einer direkten Georeferenzierung von Bildmessungen mittels aktueller Smartphone-Technologie abzusehen. Unter BerĂŒcksichtigung der gewonnenen Erkenntnisse wurde die Pegel-App Open Water Levels (OWL) entwickelt, deren methodische Entwicklung und Implementierung den Kern der Arbeit bildete. OWL ermöglicht die flexible Messung von WasserstĂ€nden via Crowdsourcing, ohne dabei zusĂ€tzliche AusrĂŒstung zu verlangen oder auf spezifische Flussabschnitte beschrĂ€nkt zu sein. Datenaufnahme und Verarbeitung erfolgen direkt im Feld, so dass die Pegelinformationen sofort verfĂŒgbar sind. Praktisch nimmt der Anwender mit OWL eine kurze Zeitraffersequenz eines Flussufers auf, die zur Berechnung einer Raum-Zeit-Textur dient und die Erkennung der Wasserlinie ermöglicht. Zur Übersetzung der Bildmessung in den 3D-Objektraum wird aus vorhandenen 3D-Daten des zu untersuchenden Flussabschnittes ein synthetisches, photorealistisches Abbild der Aufnahmesituation erstellt. Erforderliche NĂ€herungen der Bildorientierungsparameter werden von Smartphone-Sensoren und GNSS gemessen. Die Zuordnung von Kamerabild und synthetischem Bild erlaubt die Bestimmung der inneren und Ă€ußeren Orientierungsparameter mittels rĂ€umlichen RĂŒckwĂ€rtsschnitt. Nach Rekonstruktion der Aufnahmesituation lĂ€sst sich die im Bild gemessene 2D-Wasserlinie in den 3D-Objektraum projizieren und der vorherrschende Wasserstand im Referenzsystem der 3D-Daten ableiten. Im Soll-Ist-Vergleich mit konventionell gemessenen Pegeldaten zeigt OWL ein erreichbares Genauigkeitspotential von durchschnittlich 2 cm, insofern synthetisches und reales Kamerabild einen möglichst konsistenten Bildinhalt aufweisen und die Wasserlinie zuverlĂ€ssig detektiert werden kann. In der vorliegenden Dissertation werden damit verbundene geometrische und radiometrische Probleme ausfĂŒhrlich diskutiert sowie LösungsansĂ€tze, auf der Basis fortschreitender Entwicklungen von Smartphone-Technologie und Bildverarbeitung sowie der zunehmenden VerfĂŒgbarkeit von 3D-Referenzdaten, in der Synthese der Arbeit vorgestellt. Mit der gegenwĂ€rtig als Betaversion vorliegenden und auf ausgewĂ€hlten GerĂ€ten getesteten App Open Water Levels wurde eine Basis geschaffen, die mit kontinuierlicher Weiterentwicklung eine finale Freigabe fĂŒr das Crowdsourcing von WasserstĂ€nden und damit den Aufbau neuer und die Erweiterung bestehender Monitoring-Netzwerke anstrebt

    Ploughing and grazing alter the spatial patterning of surface soils in a shrub-encroached woodland

    Author's manuscript made available in accordance with the publisher's policy.Grazing is known to affect the spatial patterning of soil resources through biologically-mediated processes such as the removal of plant biomass and deposition of dung. In dense shrublands, grazing is thought to reinforce the concentration of resources around shrubs (fertile island effect) by enhancing the movement of resources from the interspace to the shrub hummocks. Shrub removal practices such as ploughing, which is commonly used to manage dense shrub patches, has unknown impacts on the distribution of soil properties. In this study we examined the effects of two land management practices, grazing and ploughing, on the spatial distribution of surface soil resources. At the unploughed–ungrazed site, the connectivity (autocorrelation range) of shrub cover was about 3.9 m and there was a well-defined pattern in soil labile C that was related to the distribution of the cover of both shrubs and litter. We also observed a strong pattern of biological crust cover and an autocorrelation range of 2.5 m, similar to that of mineralisable and mineral N. At the unploughed–grazed site, the autocorrelation range of both shrub and crust cover was reduced to 1.9 m and 1.8 m, respectively, although the range of litter cover increased to 4.4 m. Under a treatment of grazing without ploughing, the autocorrelation range of soil labile C was less related to litter cover. Whilst ploughing slightly increased the autocorrelation range of both shrub and litter cover at sites that were grazed, it obliterated any spatial pattern in biological soil crusts. We attribute changes in the spatial patterns of soil N under grazing to inputs of animal dung rather than soil crust cover. Our results indicate that grazing alone, or in combination with ploughing, leads to reduced connectivity of shrub and crust cover, reduction in crust patterning, and marked effects on shrub–litter–nutrient spatial relationships. The results reinforce the notion that management of shrublands by grazing and ploughing is likely to have marked effects on the distribution of surface soils

    Hydrology of Green Roofs: Inverse Modelling in MODFLOW 6 for Estimating the Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity of a LECA Storage Layer

    This thesis presents a study on the modelling of green roofs as a stormwater management tool using MODFLOW 6 with the ModelMuse interface. The objective of the research is to evaluate the reliability and capability of MODFLOW 6 as a modelling tool for green roofs and to estimate the hydraulic conductivity of the drainage layer on green roofs. The research work is based on a steady-state experiment conducted on the green roof (4cm of sedum and 15cm of Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate; LECA 0-6mm) at the research facility for green roofs at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU). The roof was constructed in 2018 and monitored since then, with live data logging from eight water head sensors, and recording of run-off, precipitation, temperature, and several other hydrological parameters. The use of MODFLOW 6 to simulate the flow in green roofs is not as common as its use as a simulating tool for groundwater flow. In this thesis, the reliability of MODFLOW to model the flow in green roofs under steady-state conditions was successfully evaluated by matching the modelling result with an analytical solution of the flow equations in the drainage layer of the green roof. In this research work, the model was calibrated for hydraulic conductivity ( ) against the observation data from 8 sensors representing the hydraulic head in the green roof. The calibration processes were carried out using both manual calibrations with the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) as the objective function, and inverse modelling with the Parameter ESTimation (PEST) modelling in MODFLOW 6. The results of this work showed that the model was able to accurately predict the hydraulic conductivity based on the observed hydraulic head in the green roof. Based on the modelling of the steady-state experiment, the hydraulic conductivity of LECA 0-6mm as the drainage layer of the green roof was estimated as . This modelled value closely approximates the laboratory-measured value . Furthermore, It has been found that the lower values of hydraulic conductivity ( ) made the hydraulic head rise higher than the thickness of the drainage layer, while the higher values ( ) made the model dry. Additionally, It was discovered that The calibrated K-value is relatively insensitive to the choice of boundary condition, i.e. the head value at the drain outlet. MODFLOW 6 proved to be a very robust and powerful physical-based modelling tool that was able to effectively simulate the steady flow in the drainage layer of the green roof in this research work. For the transient flow model which simulates the scenario of time-depending precipitation (unsteady-state conditions), MODFLOW 6 should be evaluated and more research should be conducted

    e-Sanctuary: open multi-physics framework for modelling wildfire urban evacuation

    The number of evacuees worldwide during wildfire keep rising, year after year. Fire evacuations at the wildland-urban interfaces (WUI) pose a serious challenge to fire and emergency services and are a global issue affecting thousands of communities around the world. But to date, there is a lack of comprehensive tools able to inform, train or aid the evacuation response and the decision making in case of wildfire. The present work describes a novel framework for modelling wildfire urban evacuations. The framework is based on multi-physics simulations that can quantify the evacuation performance. The work argues that an integrated approached requires considering and integrating all three important components of WUI evacuation, namely: fire spread, pedestrian movement, and traffic movement. The report includes a systematic review of each model component, and the key features needed for the integration into a comprehensive toolkit
