Letter counting: a stem cell for Cryptology, Quantitative Linguistics, and Statistics
Counting letters in written texts is a very ancient practice. It has
accompanied the development of Cryptology, Quantitative Linguistics, and
Statistics. In Cryptology, counting frequencies of the different characters in
an encrypted message is the basis of the so called frequency analysis method.
In Quantitative Linguistics, the proportion of vowels to consonants in
different languages was studied long before authorship attribution. In
Statistics, the alternation vowel-consonants was the only example that Markov
ever gave of his theory of chained events. A short history of letter counting
is presented. The three domains, Cryptology, Quantitative Linguistics, and
Statistics, are then examined, focusing on the interactions with the other two
fields through letter counting. As a conclusion, the eclectism of past
centuries scholars, their background in humanities, and their familiarity with
cryptograms, are identified as contributing factors to the mutual enrichment
process which is described here

Aloe succotrina (Asphodelaceae)
Aloe succotrina has a very long and complex taxonomic and nomenclatural history with wrong synonymy that is rivalled by few other aloes. This is mostly due to early authors wrongly assuming that this plant is from the Island of Socotra (Reynolds 1950). It has been in cultivation in Europe for over three hundred years, so consequently it is rather surprising that this iconic fynbos species has not featured in this journal until now

Three-body resonance in meteoroid streams
Mean-motion resonances play an important role in the evolution of various
meteoroid streams. Previous works have studied the effects of two-body
resonances in different comets and streams. These already established two-body
resonances were mainly induced either by Jovian or Saturnian effects but not
both at the same time. Some of these resonances have led to spectacular meteor
outbursts and storms in the past. In this work, we find a new resonance
mechanism involving three bodies -- i.e. meteoroid particle, Jupiter and
Saturn, in the Perseid meteoroid stream. Long-term three-body resonances are
not very common in real small bodies in our solar system although they can
mathematically exist at many resonant sweet spots in an abstract sense in any
dynamical system. This particular resonance combination in the Perseid stream
is such that it is close to the ratio of 1:4:10 if the orbital periods of
Perseid particle, Saturn and Jupiter are considered respectively. These
resonant Perseid meteoroids stay resonant for typically about 2 kyr. Highly
compact dust trails due to this unique resonance phenomenon are present in our
simulations. Some past and future years are presented where three-body resonant
meteoroids of different sizes (or subject to different radiation pressures) are
computed to come near the Earth. This is the first theoretical example of an
active and stable three-body resonance mechanism in the realm of meteoroid
streams.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables; Accepted in MNRA
Pastoral Power and Governmentality: From Therapy to Self Help
An examination of the practice of self-examination in Scottish Presbyterianism shows the value of following the later Foucault in the examination of religion as a social practice. His attention to the influence of pastoral power on governmentality is shown to have been embedded in a Roman Catholic heritage leading to a stress on the confessional. By contrast, an examination of one aspect of Protestant pastoral power indicates the genealogy of practices of self-help. An historical examination of both the structure of the Scottish church and the diaries of believers indicates the emphasis placed in this tradition on accountability. This focus then influenced developments in the United States; attention to this tradition opens up questions for contemporary practices
