Suitability of leguminous cover crop pollens as food source for the green lacewing Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae).

Diversification of crops with species that provide suitable pollen for predators may reduce pest population on crops by enhancing predator effectiveness. In this paper we evaluated the suitability of leguminous cover crop pollens to the predatory green lacewing Chrysoperla externa (Hagen). The predator is commonly found in coffee agroecosystems and the plant species tested were pigeon pea and sunn hemp, which are used in organic coffee systems. Newly emerged females and males of C. externa were reared on diets containing pollen of pigeon pea, sunn hemp, or castor bean, used as a control. The reproductive success of C. externa was evaluated when females fed the pollen species and when honey was added to the diets, to verify the predator need for an extra carbohydrate source. Similar intrinsic growth rates were found for females fed on pigeon pea pollen and on sunn hemp pollen but these rates increased significantly when honey was added to the diets. Females fed with pigeon pea pollen plus honey and with sunn hemp pollen plus honey had higher intrinsic growth rates than those fed with castor bean pollen plus honey. Females fed on castor bean pollen only or on honey only, did not oviposit. Leguminous pollen species were equally suitable for C. externa especially when they were complemented with honey. The results suggest that to successfully enhance predator effectiveness, organic coffee plantation should be diversified with plant providing pollen in combination with plant providing nectar

No contexto do ensino de elite, a inclusão educativa parecia um dado adquirido, posto que os alunos, provenientes, sobretudo, das classes dominantes, não só tinham o privilégio do acesso à educação como condições favoráveis para o sucesso escolar. No contexto da escola de massas, o reconhecimento da educação como direito de cidadania revoluciona a escola trazendo para o seu seio uma grande heterogeneidade de discentes, em termos de condição económica e social, género, cultura, raça, etnia, etc., facto que torna mais complexo o trabalho docente no sentido de promover uma ação educativa que, atendendo às necessidades educativas dos alunos, lhes proporcione oportunidades para o almejado sucesso escolar. Se, em Cabo Verde, a inclusão constitui uma opção de política educativa, questionase a sua efetividade ao nível das práticas educativas e analisam-se alguns dos desafios a serem enfrentados na consecução deste desiderato

How do policies shape population’s health in Europe: from welfare regimes to school-based tobacco control programmes

ABSTRACT - Social and health policies are considered essential to reduce morbidity, and inequalities in its distribution. This thesis aimed to better understand (1) why some population groups report higher morbidity rates; (2) the effectiveness of social policies to prevent health inequalities; (3) the effectiveness of health policies to prevent harmful health behaviours; and (4) the costs and cost-effectiveness of their implementation in real practice. We found that depression symptoms mediate the higher self-report of morbidity in Southern European female and low-educated groups. Then, we found that European welfare regimes with stronger social policies were able to attenuate the rise in inequalities in health, in particular during economic downturns. Using the case of tobacco to study the effect of health policies, we observed that smoking bans were ineffective at reducing smoking and smoking inequalities in Geneva. Portuguese adolescents perceived smoking bans as not effective in reducing access to cigarettes and smoking visibility. Both studies highlighted that these bans’ design and weak implementation hindered their effectiveness. The systematic review of the cost-effectiveness of smoking prevention policies targeting adolescents revealed that evidence is scarce and rarely based on real-world data. By assessing the costs and cost-effectiveness of implementation of these in seven European settings, we observed that these strategies are low cost and highly cost-effective. The thesis concludes that social and health policies can reduce inequalities in health and unhealthy lifestyles at a low cost, but attention must be paid to their design, implementation and evaluation regarding the context where they are put in place.RESUMO - As políticas sociais e de saúde são consideradas indispensáveis para a redução da morbimortalidade, e das desigualdades na sua distribuição. Contudo, a evidência da efetividade das políticas sociais, especialmente durante crises económicas, é limitada, assim como a evidência quanto à real efetividade, custos, e custo-efetividade das políticas de saúde. Esta tese teve como objetivo contribuir para a compreensão (1) das desigualdades na morbilidade autorreportada; (2) da efetividade das políticas sociais na prevenção das desigualdades em saúde; (3) da efetividade das políticas de saúde na prevenção de comportamentos de risco; e (4) dos custos e custo-efetividade da sua implementação. Observámos que a maior carga de sintomas depressivos explica as desigualdades no reporte de morbilidade pelos grupos mais vulneráveis do sul da Europa. Observámos também que países com políticas sociais mais estáveis absorveram melhor o efeito da crise económica nas desigualdades em saúde. Analisando as políticas de prevenção do tabagismo, observámos que a proibição parcial de fumo em locais públicos não foi efetiva na prevenção do tabagismo e desigualdades em Genebra. Em Portugal, os adolescentes reportaram limitações das políticas atualmente implementadas quanto à redução no acesso, visibilidade, e oportunidades de fumo. A revisão sistemática da custo-efetividade das políticas de prevenção de tabagismo em adolescentes mostrou que a evidência é escassa, e raramente baseada na realidade. A avaliação económica da sua implementação em sete países Europeus demonstrou baixos custos e elevada custo-efetividade, especialmente quando mais abrangentes, mais consistentemente implementadas, e quando aliadas a fortes medidas fiscais
