    Transonic CFD applications at Boeing

    The use of computational methods for three dimensional transonic flow design and analysis at the Boeing Company is presented. A range of computational tools consisting of production tools for every day use by project engineers, expert user tools for special applications by computational researchers, and an emerging tool which may see considerable use in the near future are described. These methods include full potential and Euler solvers, some coupled to three dimensional boundary layer analysis methods, for transonic flow analysis about nacelle, wing-body, wing-body-strut-nacelle, and complete aircraft configurations. As the examples presented show, such a toolbox of codes is necessary for the variety of applications typical of an industrial environment.     Privacy-Protecting Energy Management Unit through Model-Distribution Predictive Control

    The roll-out of smart meters in electricity networks introduces risks for consumer privacy due to increased measurement frequency and granularity. Through various Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring techniques, consumer behavior may be inferred from their metering data. In this paper, we propose an energy management method that reduces energy cost and protects privacy through the minimization of information leakage. The method is based on a Model Predictive Controller that utilizes energy storage and local generation, and that predicts the effects of its actions on the statistics of the actual energy consumption of a consumer and that seen by the grid. Computationally, the method requires solving a Mixed-Integer Quadratic Program of manageable size whenever new meter readings are available. We simulate the controller on generated residential load profiles with different privacy costs in a two-tier time-of-use energy pricing environment. Results show that information leakage is effectively reduced at the expense of increased energy cost. The results also show that with the proposed controller the consumer load profile seen by the grid resembles a mixture between that obtained with Non-Intrusive Load Leveling and Lazy Stepping.Comment: Accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid 2017, special issue on Distributed Control and Efficient Optimization Methods for Smart Gri

    Exploring Vanadium Chemical Transferrin Mimetic Compounds for Insulin Enhancement

    Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is caused by a lack of insulin production (Type 1) or the body’s cells’ inability to properly receive it, also known as insulin resistance (Type 2), resulting in greatly elevated levels of blood glucose. Vanadium(IV) and vanadium(V) ions are believed to enhance insulin activity by inhibition of protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B). PTP1B is normally responsible for downregulating the insulin signaling, but in DM type 2, PTP1B activity is overexpressed leading to the insulin signaling blocking. The most promising V(IV) compounds are designed for oral delivery: they are absorbed into the gut and delivered into the bloodstream where they are bound by the iron transporting protein serum transferrin (sTf). STf delivers the compound into cells via endocytosis, where vanadium can bind PTP1B. A limitation of these compounds is their poor stability at the stomach acidic conditions in which they undergo a significant amount of dissociation, resulting in a very inefficient gut absorption. This study explores the use of a chemical transferrin mimetic (cTfm) ligand to create V(IV) and V(V) compounds featuring excellent acidic pH stability for improved gut absorption. The cTfm-V(IV,V) compounds are expected to be labile in the pH of the bloodstream and thus the vanadium species can be quickly ligand exchanged with sTF. The cTfm ligand N,N\u27-di(o-hydroxybenzyl)ethylenediamine-N,N\u27-diacetic acid (HBED) was used to synthesize VO(IV)HBED and VO(V)HBED which demonstrated great aqueous stability in the 1-4 pH range. Aborda la subjetividad e intersubjetividad de las pacientes en su realidad cotidiana y contexto sociocultural.
