A Note on the Optimal Structure of Production
We analyze the advantages of centralization and decentralization in industries in
which production takes place in several stages and the costs are privately observed
by the agents in charge of production. We demonstrate that "informational diseconomies"
arise when uncorrelated information is concentrated in the hands of a
single agent. These diseconomies arise when the stages of production are different
activities with different cost supports.Publicad
Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries. Impact assessment of multi-annual plans for Southern hake, angler fish and Nephrops (STECF-11-06)
A joint ICES / STECF meeting was held in Hamburg 20-24 June 2011, to prepare an impact assessment for Southern hake, Nerphrops and Angler fish and Baltic cod and an Evaluations of existing plans for Kattegat, North Sea, West of Scotland and Irish Sea cod. The meeting involved STECF, ICES scientists dealing with Economy and Biology and included Observers (Commission staff, Managers, Stakeholders). Three separate reports to the STECF were prepared by the EWG-11- 07, one on the Impact Assessment of Southern hake, Nerphrops and Angler fish (STECF 11-06) and the second on the Impact Assessments for Baltic cod (STECF 11-05) and the third on the Evaluation of Cod in Kattegat, North Sea, West of Scotland and Irish Sea (STECF 11-07). All reports were reviewed by the STECF during its 37th plenary meeting held from 11 to 15 July 2011 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Bio-economic multi‐stock reference points as a tool to overcome the drawbacks of landing obligation
A Separation Logic for Fictional Sequential Consistency
To improve performance, modern multiprocessors and pro- gramming languages typically implement relaxed memory models that do not require all processors/threads to observe memory operations in the same order. To relieve programmers from having to reason directly about these relaxed behaviors, languages often provide efficient synchro- nization primitives and concurrent data structures with stronger high- level guarantees about memory reorderings. For instance, locks usually ensure that when a thread acquires a lock, it can observe all memory operations of the releasing thread, prior to the release. When used cor- rectly, these synchronization primitives and data structures allow clients to recover a fiction of a sequentially consistent memory model.
In this paper we propose a new proof system, iCAP-TSO, that captures this fiction formally, for a language with a TSO memory model. The logic supports reasoning about libraries that directly exploit the relaxed memory model to achieve maximum efficiency. When these libraries pro- vide sufficient guarantees, the logic hides the underlying complexity and admits standard separation logic rules for reasoning about their more high-level clients
Gravitational Energy of Kerr and Kerr Anti-de Sitter Space-times in the Teleparallel Geometry
In the context of the Hamiltonian formulation of the teleparallel equivalent
of general relativity we compute the gravitational energy of Kerr and Kerr
Anti-de Sitter (Kerr-AdS) space-times. The present calculation is carried out
by means of an expression for the energy of the gravitational field that
naturally arises from the integral form of the constraint equations of the
formalism. In each case, the energy is exactly computed for finite and
arbitrary spacelike two-spheres, without any restriction on the metric
parameters. In particular, we evaluate the energy at the outer event horizon of

Star Models with Dark Energy
We have constructed star models consisting of four parts: (i) a homogeneous
inner core with anisotropic pressure (ii) an infinitesimal thin shell
separating the core and the envelope; (iii) an envelope of inhomogeneous
density and isotropic pressure; (iv) an infinitesimal thin shell matching the
envelope boundary and the exterior Schwarzschild spacetime. We have analyzed
all the energy conditions for the core, envelope and the two thin shells. We
have found that, in order to have static solutions, at least one of the regions
must be constituted by dark energy. The results show that there is no physical
reason to have a superior limit for the mass of these objects but for the ratio

Gravitational Collapse: Expanding and Collapsing Regions
We investigate the expanding and collapsing regions by taking two well-known
spherically symmetric spacetimes. For this purpose, the general formalism is
developed by using Israel junction conditions for arbitrary spacetimes. This
has been used to obtain the surface energy density and the tangential pressure.
The minimal pressure provides the gateway to explore the expanding and
collapsing regions. We take Minkowski and Kantowski-Sachs spacetimes and use
the general formulation to investigate the expanding and collapsing regions of

Bioeconomic multistock reference points as a tool for overcoming the drawbacks of the landing obligation
The landing obligation policy was one of the major innovations introduced in the last Common Fisheries Policy reform in Europe. It is foreseen that the policy will affect the use of fishing opportunities and hence the economic performance of the fleets. The problem with fishing opportunities could be solved if single-stock total allowable catches (TACs) could be achieved simultaneously for all the stocks. In this study, we evaluate the economic impact of the landing obligation policy on the Spanish demersal fleet operating in the Iberian Sea region. To generate TAC advice, we used two sets of maximum sustainable yield (MSY) reference points, the single-stock MSY reference points defined by ICES and a set of multistock reference points calculated simultaneously using a bioeconomic optimization model. We found that the impact of the landing obligation is time and fleet dependent and highly influenced by assumptions about fleet dynamics. At fishery level, multistock reference points mitigate the decrease in the net present value generated by the implementation of the landing obligation. However at fleet level, the effect depends on the fleet itself and the period. To ensure the optimum use of fishing opportunities, the landing obligation should be accompanied by a management system that guarantees consistency between single-stock TACs. In this regard, multistock reference points represent an improvement over those currently in use. However, further investigation is necessary to enhance performance both at fleet level and in the long term.Versión del edito
The response of benthic foraminifera to pollution and environmental stress in Ria de Aveiro (N Portugal)
This work evaluates the quality of the sediment in Ria de Aveiro, a coastal lagoon located at N of Portugal that is under strong anthropic influence, and the effects of the contamination on benthic foraminifera. The initial approach for measuring pollution was done through the load pollution index (LPI), based on As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn concentrations, and determined by total digestion of the sediments (TDS). This information was complemented by conducting a metal fractionation technique (sequential chemical extraction - SCE) in some of the most contaminated samples in order to define the relevance of different metal bearing- phases (exchangeable cations adsorbed by clay and co-precipitated with carbonates, absorbed by organic matter and retained in the mineralogical phase) and to evaluate the toxic heavy metal availability. Multivariable statistical analyses were carried out taking into consideration the geochemical results, as well as the biotic (percentage of species/groups of species; foraminifer abundance and diversity) and abiotic variables, such as sediment content in mud, total organic carbon (TOC) and Eh. SCE results show that most of the element concentration in the sediments is retained in the resistant mineralogical phase. However, the higher bioavailability of some toxic elements, such as As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn, found in Laranjo Bay, Aveiro City, Aveiro Harbours and Espinheiro Channel, have a generic negative impact on benthic foraminifera of the Aveiro lagoon. Differential sensitivity of benthic foraminifera to high concentrations of heavy metals may exist. quinqueloculina seminulum, for instance, seems to be more tolerant to higher bioavailable concentrations of Pb and Cu than Ammonia tepida or Haynesina germanica. Both species were previously considered to be the most heavy metal-tolerant foraminifer species.
