    Climate warming, euxinia and carbon isotope perturbations during the Carnian (Triassic) Crisis in South China

    The Carnian Humid Episode (CHE), also known as the Carnian Pluvial Event, and associated biotic changes are major enigmas of the Mesozoic record in western Tethys. We show that the CHE also occurred in eastern Tethys (South China), suggestive of a much more widespread and probably global climate perturbation. Oxygen isotope records from conodont apatite indicate a double-pulse warming event. The CHE coincided with an initial warming of 4 °C. This was followed by a transient cooling period and then a prolonged ~7 °C warming in the later Carnian (Tuvalian 2). Carbon isotope perturbations associated with the CHE of western Tethys occurred contemporaneously in South China, and mark the start of a prolonged period of carbon cycle instability that persisted until the late Carnian. The dry-wet transition during the CHE coincides with the negative carbon isotope excursion and the temperature rise, pointing to an intensification of hydrologic cycle activities due to climatic warming. While carbonate platform shutdown in western Tethys is associated with an influx of siliciclastic sediment, the eastern Tethyan carbonate platforms are overlain by deep-water anoxic facies. The transition from oxygenated to euxinic facies was via a condensed, manganiferous carbonate (MnO content up to 15.1 wt%), that records an intense Mn shuttle operating in the basin. Significant siliciclastic influx in South China only occurred after the CHE climatic changes and was probably due to foreland basin development at the onset of the Indosinian Orogeny. The mid-Carnian biotic crisis thus coincided with several phenomena associated with major extinction events: a carbonate production crisis, climate warming, δ 13 C oscillations, marine anoxia, biotic turnover and flood basalt eruptions (of the Wrangellia Large Igneous Province)

    Exceptionally Slow Rise in Differential Reflectivity Spectra of Excitons in GaN: Effect of Excitation-induced Dephasing

    Femtosecond pump-probe (PP) differential reflectivity spectroscopy (DRS) and four-wave mixing (FWM) experiments were performed simultaneously to study the initial temporal dynamics of the exciton line-shapes in GaN epilayers. Beats between the A-B excitons were found \textit{only for positive time delay} in both PP and FWM experiments. The rise time at negative time delay for the differential reflection spectra was much slower than the FWM signal or PP differential transmission spectroscopy (DTS) at the exciton resonance. A numerical solution of a six band semiconductor Bloch equation model including nonlinearities at the Hartree-Fock level shows that this slow rise in the DRS results from excitation induced dephasing (EID), that is, the strong density dependence of the dephasing time which changes with the laser excitation energy.Comment: 8 figure

    Quantization of adiabatic pumped charge in the presence of superconducting lead

    We investigate the parametric electron pumping of a double barrier structure in the presence of a superconducting lead. The parametric pumping is facilitated by cyclic variation of the barrier heights x1x_1 and x2x_2 of the barriers. In the weak coupling regime, there exists a resonance line in the parameter space (x1,x2)(x_1,x_2) so that the energy of the quasi-bound state is in line with the incoming Fermi energy. Levinson et al found recently that the pumped charge for each pumping cycle is quantized with Q=2eQ=2e for normal structure when the pumping contour encircles the resonance line. In the presence of a superconducting lead, we find that the pumped charge is quantized with the value 2e2e

    We investigate the parametric pumping of a hybrid structure consisting of a normal quantum dot, a normal lead and a superconducting lead. Using the time dependent scattering matrix theory, we have derived a general expression for the pumped electric current and heat current. We have also derived the relationship among the instantaneous pumped heat current, electric current, and shot noise. This gives a lower bound for the pumped heat current in the hybrid system similar to that of the normal case obtained by Avron et al

    We investigate a non-adiabatic parametric quantum pump consists of a nonmagnetic scattering region connected by two ferromagnetic leads. The presence of ferromagnetic leads allows electrons with different spins to experience different potential landscape. Using this effect we propose a quantum spin pump that drives spin-up electrons to flow in one direction and spin-down electrons to flow in opposite direction. As a result, the spin pump can deliver a spin current with vanishing charge current

    Co-existence of lung carcinoma metastasis and enchondroma in the femur of a patient with Ollier disease

    Tumour-to-tumour metastasis is very unusual and has been defined as a tumour metastasis into another histologically different tumour. It is extremely rare in bone. We report a case of lung squamous cell carcinoma metastasized to an enchondroma in the femur of a patient with Ollier disease. A 60-year-old female had a history of a poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. She underwent a video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy, and a follow-up MRI scan showed three lesions in the left distal femur and proximal tibia, which were initially interpreted as metastasis on radiology. Resection of the left proximal tibial lesion was performed, and the pathological findings were consistent with enchondroma with no evidence of metastasis. Subsequent curettage of lesions in the distal left femur revealed metastatic poorly differentiated carcinoma with foci of hyaline cartilage, which was most consistent with metastatic carcinoma in a pre-existing enchondroma. The MRI films were re-reviewed. Characteristic MRI features of enchondroma were found in the lesion in the left proximal tibia and one of the lesions in the left distal femur, while the features of the other lesion in the left distal femur included cortical destruction and extensive oedema in surrounding soft tissue, which were consistent with a malignant tumour. In addition, the enchondroma in the lateral condyle showed blurring and irregular inner margin and adjacent bone oedema, which likely represents a co-existing metastatic tumour and enchondroma. The difference in lineage was confirmed by immunohistochemistry. The final diagnosis was metastatic poorly differentiated carcinoma of the lung into a co-existent enchondroma. The diagnosis can be challenging and could be easily overlooked both radiologically and histologically. Thorough clinical and radiological information is critical for the diagnosis, and despite a very unusual event, awareness of the tumour-to-tumour metastasis phenomenon can avoid an inaccurate diagnosis by the pathologist, therefore preventing inappropriate clinical intervention

    Early Carnian conodont fauna at Yongyue, Zhenfeng area and its implication for Ladinian-Carnian subdivision in Guizhou, South China

    The subdivision of Ladinian and Carnian strata in Guizhou, South China has been a matter of intense debate because of the paucity of age-diagnostic faunas. Here we have carried out a detailed conodont biostratigraphic investigation on the Yangliujing, Zhuganpo and Wayao formations in the Yongyue section of western Guizhou Province. Conodonts are only prolific in the Zhuganpo and Wayao formations. Three genera and twenty species are identified, including two new species Quadralella wanlanensis n. sp. and Quadralella yongyueensis n. sp. They represent a rather endemic fauna of latest Ladinian to early Carnian age. Four conodont zones are established. They are, in the ascending order, the Paragondolella foliata, Quadralella polygnathiformis, Quadralella tadpole, and Quadralella aff. praelindae zones. Thus in the study area, the Zhuganpo Formation is generally of early Carnian (Julian 1) age whilst the Wayao Formation probably extends from the Julian 2 into the late Carnian (Tuvalian substage). The Ladinian–Carnian boundary (LCB) cannot be precisely defined due to the absence of the ammonoid Daxatina Canadensis and the paucity of conodonts. However, the LCB is unlikely lower than the Yangliujing–Zhuganpo formation contact. The Julian 1–Julian 2 (early Carnian) substages boundary is defined in the uppermost Zhuganpo Formation by the occurrence of basal Julian 2 ammonoid Austrotrachyceras ex gr. A. austriacum and is also evidenced by the disappearance of most short-range Julian 1 conodonts in the overlying Wayao Formation

    Charmless BsPP,PV,VVB_s\to PP, PV, VV Decays Based on the six-quark Effective Hamiltonian with Strong Phase Effects II

    We provide a systematic study of charmless BsPP,PV,VVB_s \to PP, PV, VV decays (PP and VV denote pseudoscalar and vector mesons, respectively) based on an approximate six-quark operator effective Hamiltonian from QCD. The calculation of the relevant hard-scattering kernels is carried out, the resulting transition form factors are consistent with the results of QCD sum rule calculations. By taking into account important classes of power corrections involving "chirally-enhanced" terms and the vertex corrections as well as weak annihilation contributions with non-trivial strong phase, we present predictions for the branching ratios and CP asymmetries of BsB_s decays into PP, PV and VV final states, and also for the corresponding polarization observables in VV final states. It is found that the weak annihilation contributions with non-trivial strong phase have remarkable effects on the observables in the color-suppressed and penguin-dominated decay modes. In addition, we discuss the SU(3) flavor symmetry and show that the symmetry relations are generally respected

    We derived a general and exact expression of current for quantum parametric charge pumps in the non-adiabatic regime at finite pumping frequency and finite driving amplitude. The non-perturbative theory predicts a remarkable plateau structure in the pumped current due to multi-photon assisted processes in a double-barrier quantum well pump involving only a {\it single} pumping potential. It also predicts a current reversal as the resonant level of the pump crosses the Fermi energy of the leads
