    The measurement of reinstatement backfill properties

    The Home Committee Report, published in 1985, identified the need for the reinstatement of service trench backfill to be performed to a higher and more reliable standard. This end was perceived as desirable, not only to improve road quality and safety, but also to increase the protection afforded to utility apparatus, thereby reducing the number of excavations required for its repair and replacement. The replacement of existing method specifications with a performance specification, based on the testing of an appropriate property of the reinstated material, is one possible means of improving the quality of reinstatement works. The Clegg meter is finding increasing usage for the purpose of compaction measurement. This device is simple to use and measures the decceleration response of a mass in collision with the ground surface. The decelartaion response is characterised by the Impact Value. The sampled volume is, however, very small in relation to the volume of material compacted and, for full evaluation, each compacted layer must be individually tested prior to the placing of the subsequent layer. The ideal test would be non-intrusive and operable from the final surface of the granular backfill; wave transmission velocity measurements are thus a potential technique. The propagation of sinusoidally excited Rayleigh-type surface waves is identified as the most promising method of measurement for reinstatement backfill quality. Experimental measurements of particle displacement at depth lend credence to the classical assumption that the depth of propagation of Rayleigh-type surface waves is equal to one-half the wavelength (z = Îł/2).Included in this thesis is a review of the salient aspects of reinstatement works and a presentation of the necessary theory of wave propagation. The experimental results presented relate to tests on two sand materials compacted using different levels of compactive effort in all above-ground laboratory based trench and also to tests conducted on a crushed limestone aggregate under field conditions. Results from a short programme of field-based case studies are also presented. In addition to the surface wave velocity and Impact Value results, values for dry density and CBR are also presented. The data generally show a good correlation with compactive effort, whether defined simply as the number of passes/layer (N(_p)) or by a new parameter, the ratio of N(_p) to the mean layer thickness (N(_p)/h). Sensitivity analyses indicate that the Impact Value is a more sensitive measure of the degree of compaction than are either the surface wave velocity or the dry density. Conversion of the surface wave velocity results to shear modulus values, using measured density values, gives a sensitivity to compactive effort that is broadly comparable to that of the Impact Value. A novel technique for the analysis of Rayleigh-type surface wave attenuation data is presented. This allows the calculation of the material attenuation coefficient while obviating the need for potentially erroneous estimates as to the state of the attenuation curve, close to the source of vibration, to be made

    Comparison of Deep-Water Viromes from the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea

    The aim of this study was to compare the composition of two deep-sea viral communities obtained from the RomancheFracture Zone in the Atlantic Ocean (collected at 5200 m depth) and the southwest Mediterranean Sea (from 2400 m depth)using a pyro-sequencing approach. The results are based on 18.7% and 6.9% of the sequences obtained from the AtlanticOcean and the Mediterranean Sea, respectively, with hits to genomes in the non-redundant viral RefSeq database. Theidentifiable richness and relative abundance in both viromes were dominated by archaeal and bacterial viruses accountingfor 92.3% of the relative abundance in the Atlantic Ocean and for 83.6% in the Mediterranean Sea. Despite characteristicdifferences in hydrographic features between the sampling sites in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, 440 virusgenomes were found in both viromes. An additional 431 virus genomes were identified in the Atlantic Ocean and 75 virusgenomes were only found in the Mediterranean Sea. The results indicate that the rather contrasting deep-sea environmentsof the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea share a common core set of virus types constituting the majority of bothvirus communities in terms of relative abundance (Atlantic Ocean: 81.4%; Mediterranean Sea: 88.7%)

    Normative EMG activation patterns of school-age children during gait

    Gait analysis is widely used in clinics to study walking abnormalities for surgery planning, definition of rehabilitation protocols, and objective evaluation of clinical outcomes. Surface electromyography allows the study of muscle activity non-invasively and the evaluation of the timing of muscle activation during movement. The aim of this study was to present a normative dataset of muscle activation patterns obtained from a large number of strides in a population of 100 healthy children aged 6-11 years. The activity of Tibialis Anterior, Lateral head of Gastrocnemius, Vastus Medialis, Rectus Femoris and Lateral Hamstrings on both lower limbs was analyzed during a 2.5-min walk at free speed. More than 120 consecutive strides were analyzed for each child, resulting in approximately 28,000 strides. Onset and offset instants were reported for each observed muscle. The analysis of a high number of strides for each participant allowed us to obtain the most recurrent patterns of activation during gait, demonstrating that a subject uses a specific muscle with different activation modalities even in the same walk. The knowledge of the various activation patterns and of their statistics will be of help in clinical gait analysis and will serve as reference in the design of future gait studie

    From Double Chooz to Triple Chooz - Neutrino Physics at the Chooz Reactor Complex

    We discuss the potential of the proposed Double Chooz reactor experiment to measure the neutrino mixing angle sin⁥22Ξ13\sin^2 2\theta_{13}. We especially consider systematical uncertainties and their partial cancellation in a near and far detector operation, and we discuss implications of a delayed near detector startup. Furthermore, we introduce Triple Chooz, which is a possible upgrade scenario assuming a second, larger far detector, which could start data taking in an existing cavern five years after the first far detector. We review the role of the Chooz reactor experiments in the global context of future neutrino beam experiments. We find that both Double Chooz and Triple Chooz can play a leading role in the search for a finite value of sin⁥22Ξ13\sin^2 2\theta_{13}. Double Chooz could achieve a sensitivity limit of ∌2⋅10−2\sim 2 \cdot 10^{-2} at the 90%~confidence level after 5~years while the Triple Chooz setup could give a sensitivity below 10−210^{-2}.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figure

    An identifying code of a (di)graph GG is a dominating subset CC of the vertices of GG such that all distinct vertices of GG have distinct (in)neighbourhoods within CC. In this paper, we classify all finite digraphs which only admit their whole vertex set in any identifying code. We also classify all such infinite oriented graphs. Furthermore, by relating this concept to a well known theorem of A. Bondy on set systems we classify the extremal cases for this theorem

    This thematic set of papers is intended to raise awareness of the types, nature, effects and impacts of geohazards in Central China. The papers will be published in this and subsequent issues of QJEGH and demonstrate the significant impacts that are wrought on the lives and livelihoods of those who live and work in the mountainous areas of Central China. China is all too often in the news as a result of geohazards that have a severe impact on lives and livelihoods. The mountainous terrain of Central China is subject to frequent hazards of high intensity with recent examples such as the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake and the 2010 Zhouqu debris flow. Rapid economic development brings with it expansion of urban centres and infrastructure networks, which not only increases the exposure of the population to natural processes in a dynamic environment, but can also lead to further strains on a landscape that is only marginally stable. Frequent geohazard events have sparked much research in an effort to better understand processes and material properties that can be used to inform and implement effective strategies to mitigate against the negative consequences of these geohazards

    Optical measurements were performed on thin films of Rbx_{x}C60_{60}, identified by X-ray diffraction as mostly x=1x=1 material. The samples were subjected to various heat treatments, including quenching and slow cooling from 400K. The dramatic increase in the transmission of the quenched samples, and the relaxation towards the transmission observed in slow cooled samples provides direct evidence for the existence of a metastable insulating phase.     Singular solutions of fully nonlinear elliptic equations and applications

    We study the properties of solutions of fully nonlinear, positively homogeneous elliptic equations near boundary points of Lipschitz domains at which the solution may be singular. We show that these equations have two positive solutions in each cone of Rn\mathbb{R}^n, and the solutions are unique in an appropriate sense. We introduce a new method for analyzing the behavior of solutions near certain Lipschitz boundary points, which permits us to classify isolated boundary singularities of solutions which are bounded from either above or below. We also obtain a sharp Phragm\'en-Lindel\"of result as well as a principle of positive singularities in certain Lipschitz domains.Comment: 41 pages, 2 figure
