Aim: To evaluate the solvent efficacy of an experimental substance based on the Myrciaria dubia (camu-camu) essential oil in root canal re-treatment procedures. Materials and methods: Sixty polylactic acid tubes (PLA) were used and divided into five groups (distilled water, M. dubia oil (camu-camu), xylene, orange peel, and eucalyptus oil). In each group, 12 tubes were filled with a temporary restorative material (Coltosol®). The upper and the middle part were filled with gutta-percha. A total of 0.1 mL solvent was added depending on the study group and left for 5 minutes. Once the solvent was placed, the samples were taken to the Instron 3382 machine. The force used to penetrate the spreader into the 5 mm depth was recorded in Newton (N). The Kruskal–Wallis test and Dunn’s post hoc test were used for multiple comparisons (p < 0.05). Statistical analysis was performed using Stata® v.15.0 package. Results: We found significant statistical differences when comparing all solvents (p = 0.001), obtaining 14.02 N for the experimental substance. The results of the superficial dissolution depth and the force used to penetrate the spreader to 5 mm revealed that the M. dubia oil (camu-camu) was the solvent that significantly softened the gutta-percha the most (p < 0.05). These values were followed by xylene and orange peel oil. We also found that the solvent with the lowest efficacy was eucalyptus oil. Conclusion: The M. dubia (camu-camu) essential oil had more softening power than other solutions in the study. Clinical significance: The efficacy of the M. dubia (camu-camu) essential oil is relevant as it is a nonharmful solvent that would not harm the periapical tissue and would reduce the time of endodontic re-treatments procedures, which is beneficial for patients.

    Experimental analysis of T 1 imaging with a single-scan, multiple-point, inversion-recovery technique

Look and Locker's single-scan, multiple-point, T 1 determination technique modified for imaging applications was evaluated experimentally for its accuracy and reliability with respect to the pulse sequence parameters. in particular. to the interpulse delay, T D , and the tip angle, Α. T 1 imaging experiments were performed with a 0.5-T imaging system on a phantom which consisted of an array of vials containing 2% agarose gels doped with various amount of Mn 2+ using different combinations of the parameter set { T D . Α}. T 1 , results obtained with this technique were compared with those measured by a conventional inversion-recovery procedure using the same spectrometer. Strategic choice of pulse sequence parameters to minimize experimental errors and the criteria for these choices will be discussed. © 1992 Academic Press, Inc.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/38487/1/1910250212_ftp.pd

Why Music Therapists Choose to Work with a Clinical Population: An International Pilot Survey

    Get PDF
    (1) Background: Throughout their career, music therapists make decisions regarding the clinical population they choose to work with. Though such decisions can have broad implications on the professional development of the music therapist, not much is known about the reasons for making these decisions and whether they are affected by demographic or professional factors. (2) Methods: In this pilot study, we surveyed 439 music therapists from six countries (i.e., Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Israel, Spain, and Switzerland) using an online questionnaire. We asked the respondents to explain why they chose to work with their main clienteles, and we examined whether their reasons were connected to demographic factors such as country of origin, gender, and seniority, and professional factors such as experience as a music therapist and population one works with. (3) Results: The category analysis of these responses pointed at nine distinct reasons that could be grouped into "practical reasons", "reasons of connection", and "innovation". There were differences in reasoning between music therapists from different countries, and with different degrees of seniority, but not between male and female music therapists. (4) Discussion: The implications on training programs and on policy makers are discussed as well as the importance of this subject to the development of music therapists' professional identity

Long-Pulsed Nd:YAG Laser Treatment of Warts: Report on a Series of 369 Cases

    Get PDF
Various treatment methods have been adopted in the management of warts; however, there is still no consensus on first-line treatment. This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser in the treatment of warts. Over the course of 1 yr, 369 patients with recalcitrant or untreated warts were exposed to a long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser. The following parameters were used: spot size, 5 mm; pulse duration, 20 msec; and fluence, 200 J/cm2. No concomitant topical treatment was used. In all, 21 patients were lost during follow up; hence, the data for 348 patients were evaluated. The clearance rate was 96% (336 of the 348 treated warts were eradicated). The clearance rate of verruca vulgaris after the first treatment was very high (72.6%), whereas the clearance rate of deep palmopantar warts after the first treatment was low (44.1%). During a median follow-up period of 2.24 months (range, 2-10 months), 11 relapses were seen (recurrence rate, 3.27%). In conclusion, long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser is safe and effective for the removal or reduction of warts and is less dependent on patient compliance than are other treatment options
