    Análise da sustentabilidade do processo de transformação da paisagem no concelho de Alter do Chão.

    O uso sustentável do território é uma premissa nas políticas de ordenamento do território. Considera-se que a utilização do território é sustentável quando esta é realizada de acordo com a sua aptidão, considerada como a faculdade que determinada porção do território tem para produzir bens ou prestar serviços de forma equilibrada. Com este trabalho pretendeu-se analisar a transformação da paisagem no concelho de Alter do Chão entre 1990 e 2007, bem como avaliar a adequabilidade da ocupação do território às suas potencialidades numa óptica de sustentabilidade. Para o efeito, procedeu-se ao cruzamento dos temas relativos à ocupação do solo com os dados da potencialidade dos solos, obtendo-se desta forma a adequabilidade do uso. Finalmente, analisou-se a influência das políticas agro-florestais na transformação da paisagem. Constatou-se que, no período em apreço a ocupação do território esteve genericamente de acordo com as potencialidades de uso identificadas, tendo-se, no entanto, verificado um aumento das áreas sub-exploradas. No concelho ocorreu uma modificação de uso agrícola para uma ocupação de matos e pastagens naturais. Em 1990 a área afecta ao uso agrícola era superior a 43%. Em 2007 esta área diminuiu para cerca de 22%. Esta alteração de uso resultou da reconversão de áreas agrícolas para usos associados a um regime de exploração mais extensivo, que alguns agricultores efectuaram, aproveitando os benefícios da alteração da PAC (Política Agrícola Comum), beneficiando a não produção em alguns casos. A metodologia utilizada, ao permitir determinar a adequabilidade da estrutura circunstancial de uso face à matriz edáfica, assume uma utilidade para gestão futura, consistindo numa ferramenta a considerar no ordenamento e gestão do território.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Influence of culinary process on free and bound (poly)phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity of artichoke

    Artichokes are an important source of (poly)phenolic compounds, mainly caffeoylquinic acids, which consumption has been associated with health benefits. However, heat treatments have shown to affect the amounts of these bioactive food compounds. In the present study the influence of culinary techniques (boiling, griddling, and frying) on the total (poly)phenolic content of artichokes (Cynara Scolymus cv. Blanca de Tudela) was evaluated by LC-MS/MS. Additionally, the antioxidant capacity of cooked artichokes was evaluated by spectrophotometric methods. A total of 31 (poly)phenols were identified and quantified, being caffeoylquinic acids the most abundant compounds in raw artichokes accounting for more than 95% of total (poly)phenolic compounds. With the different culinary techniques, these compounds suffered degradation but also redistribution, probably due to isomerization and hydrolysis reactions. Frying and griddling showed the lowest content of (poly)phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity suggesting thermal degradation. Boiling also provoked losses, which were mainly due to leaching of phenolic compounds into the water. However, it was the heat treatment that best preserved (poly)phenolic compounds in artichokes

    Preventing and addressing the stress reactions of health care workers caring for patients with COVID-19: Development of a digital platform (Be + against COVID)

    Background: COVID-19 became a major public health concern in March 2020. Due to the high rate of hospitalizations for COVID-19 in a short time, health care workers and other involved staff are subjected to a large workload and high emotional distress. Objective: The objective of this study is to develop a digital tool to provide support resources that might prevent and consider acute stress reactions in health care workers and other support staff due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: The contents of the digital platform were created through an evidence-based review and consensus conference. The website was built using the Google Blogger tool. The Android version of the app was developed in the Java and XML languages using Android Studio version 3.6, and the iOS version was developed in the Swift language using Xcode version 11.5. The app was evaluated externally by the Andalusian Agency for Healthcare Quality. Results: We detected the needs and pressing situations of frontline health care workers, and then, we proposed a serial of recommendations and support resources to address them. These resources were redesigned using the feedback received. A website in three different languages (Spanish, English, and Portuguese) and a mobile app were developed with these contents, and the AppSaludable Quality Seal was granted to the app. A specific self-report scale to measure acute stress and additional tools were included to support the health care workforce. This instrument has been used in several Latin American countries and has been adapted considering cultural differences. The resources section of the website was the most visited with 18, 516 out of 68, 913 (26.9%) visits, and the “Self-Report Acute Stress Scale” was the most visited resource with 6468 out of 18, 516 (34.9%) visits. Conclusions: The Be + against COVID platform (website and app) was developed and launched to offer a pool of recommendations and support resources, which were specifically designed to protect the psychological well-being and the work morale of health care workers. This is an original initiative different from the usual psychological assistance hotlines

    Rings and bars: unmasking secular evolution of galaxies

    Secular evolution gradually shapes galaxies by internal processes, in contrast to early cosmological evolution which is more rapid. An important driver of secular evolution is the flow of gas from the disk into the central regions, often under the influence of a bar. In this paper, we review several new observational results on bars and nuclear rings in galaxies. They show that these components are intimately linked to each other, and to the properties of their host galaxy. We briefly discuss how upcoming observations, e.g., imaging from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S4G), will lead to significant further advances in this area of research.Comment: Invited review at "Galaxies and their Masks", celebrating Ken Freeman's 70-th birthday, Sossusvlei, Namibia, April 2010.     Mediterranean diet and invasive breast cancer risk in the predimed trial

Dietary factors may play a role in the risk of breast cancer. Some observational cohort studies have suggested that the Mediterranean diet may reduce the risk of breast cancer but no randomized controlled trial had investigated this issue. We aimed to evaluate the effect of two interventions with Mediterranean diet on the primary prevention of breast cancer in a randomized controlled trial. [Methods]: The PREDIMED study (Prevención con Dieta Mediterránea) is a randomized, singleblind, and controlled trial conducted in Spanish primary healthcare centres. Out of 4,282 women recruited (aged 60 to 80 years), 1,478 were assigned to a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil, 1,288 to a Mediterranean diet supplemented with mixed nuts and 1,393 to a control diet (advice to reduce dietary fat). Primary analyses were performed on an intention-to-treat basis. Poisson regression analyses were used to assess the relationship between the nutritional intervention and the incidence of confirmed invasive breast cancer. [Results]: After a median of 4.3 years after randomization, participants in both Mediterranean diet groups (extra-virgin olive oil or nuts) had a 55% relative reduction (95%CI: 9% to 78%) in the risk of invasive breast cancer compared with participants assigned to a control group (with the recommendation to follow a low-fat diet). Observed rates (per 1000 person-years) were 1.14, 1.82 and 2.90 for the Mediterranean diet with extra-virgin olive oil group, the Mediterranean diet supplemented with nuts group and the control group, respectively. The multivariable-adjusted rate ratios versus the control group were 0.34 (95% CI: 0.14 to 0.83) for the Mediterranean diet with extra-virgin olive oil group, and 0.60 (95% CI: 0.26 to 1.35) for the Mediterranean diet supplemented with nuts group. [Conclusions]: This is the first large randomized trial assessing the role of a dietary pattern on breast cancer incidence. Our results suggest that an intervention promoting adherence to the Mediterranean dietary pattern, specially when it is supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil, may contribute to a substantial reduction in the incidence of invasive breast cancer risk in women 60 years and older. However, a longer follow-up of our participants is needed to obtain more precise estimates

    Culture-independent assessment of the diazotrophic Bradyrhizobium communities in the Pampa and Atlantic Forest Biomes localities in southern Brazil

    The isolation of rhizobial strains from the root and stem nodules remains a commonly used method despite its limitations as it enables the identification of mainly dominant symbiotic groups within rhizobial communities. To overcome these limitations, we used genus-specific nifD primers in a cultureindependent assessment of Bradyrhizobium communities inhabiting soils in southern Brazil. The majority of nifD sequences were generated from DNA isolated from tropical-lowland pasture soils, although some soil samples originated from the Campos de Cima da Serra volcanic plateau. In the nifD tree, all the bradyrhizobial sequences comprised 38 clades, including 18 new clades. The sequences generated in this study were resolved into 22 clades and 21 singletons. The nifD bradyrhizobial assemblage contained Azorhizobium and a-proteobacterial methylotrophic genera, suggesting that these genera may have acquired their nif loci from Bradyrhizobium donors. The most common in the lowland pasture soils subclade III.3D branch comprises the isolates of mainly an American origin. On the other hand, subclade III.4, which was earlier detected in Brazil among Bradyrhizobium isolates nodulating native lupins, appears more common in the Campos de Cima da Serra soils. The second-largest group, Clade XXXVIII, has not yet been reported in culture-dependent studies, while another common group called Clade I represents a symbiovar predominating in Australia.     Avoiding lodging in irrigated spring wheat. II. Genetic variation of stem and root structural properties

    Lodging-related traits were evaluated on the CIMMYT Core spring wheat Germplasm Panel (CIMCOG) in the Yaqui Valley of North-West Mexico during three seasons (2010–2013). Genetic variation was significant for all the lodging-related traits in the cross-year analysis, however, significant G × E interaction due to rank changes or changes in the absolute differences between cultivars were identified. The inconsistences on cultivar performances across seasons particularly reduced the heritability of key characters related to root lodging resistance (anchorage strength). Target characters related to stem lodging resistance (stem strength) showed good heritability values equal or above 0.70. Positive correlations between stem strength and stem diameter and between root plate spread and root strength were found. Selecting for greater stem diameter and wall width, greater root plate spread and shorter plant height could enable breeders to increase lodging resistance by increasing stem strength, root strength and decreasing plant leverage, respectively. Achieving a lodging-proof crop will depend on finding a wider root plate spread and implementing new management strategies. Genetic linkages between lodging traits will not constrain the combination of the key lodging-trait dimensions to achieve a lodging-proof ideotype. However, strong association between stem strength and stem wall width will increase the total biomass cost needed for lodging resistance

    Modeling the Subsurface Structure of Sunspots

    While sunspots are easily observed at the solar surface, determining their subsurface structure is not trivial. There are two main hypotheses for the subsurface structure of sunspots: the monolithic model and the cluster model. Local helioseismology is the only means by which we can investigate subphotospheric structure. However, as current linear inversion techniques do not yet allow helioseismology to probe the internal structure with sufficient confidence to distinguish between the monolith and cluster models, the development of physically realistic sunspot models are a priority for helioseismologists. This is because they are not only important indicators of the variety of physical effects that may influence helioseismic inferences in active regions, but they also enable detailed assessments of the validity of helioseismic interpretations through numerical forward modeling. In this paper, we provide a critical review of the existing sunspot models and an overview of numerical methods employed to model wave propagation through model sunspots. We then carry out an helioseismic analysis of the sunspot in Active Region 9787 and address the serious inconsistencies uncovered by \citeauthor{gizonetal2009}~(\citeyear{gizonetal2009,gizonetal2009a}). We find that this sunspot is most probably associated with a shallow, positive wave-speed perturbation (unlike the traditional two-layer model) and that travel-time measurements are consistent with a horizontal outflow in the surrounding moat.Comment: 73 pages, 19 figures, accepted by Solar Physic

    Patterns of psychological responses among the public during the early phase of COVID-19: A cross-regional analysis

    This study aimed to compare the mediation of psychological flexibility, prosociality and coping in the impacts of illness perceptions toward COVID-19 on mental health among seven regions. Convenience sampled online survey was conducted between April and June 2020 from 9130 citizens in 21 countries. Illness perceptions toward COVID-19, psychological flexibility, prosociality, coping and mental health, socio-demographics, lockdown-related variables and COVID-19 status were assessed. Results showed that psychological flexibility was the only significant mediator in the relationship between illness perceptions toward COVID-19 and mental health across all regions (all ps = 0.001–0.021). Seeking social support was the significant mediator across subgroups (all ps range = <0.001–0.005) except from the Hong Kong sample (p = 0.06) and the North and South American sample (p = 0.53). No mediation was found for problem-solving (except from the Northern European sample, p = 0.009). Prosociality was the significant mediator in the Hong Kong sample (p =0.016) and the Eastern European sample (p = 0.008). These findings indicate that fostering psychological flexibility may help to mitigate the adverse mental impacts of COVID-19 across regions. Roles of seeking social support, problem-solving and prosociality vary across regions. © 2021 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland
