The UNAM-KIAS Catalog of Isolated Galaxies

A new catalog of isolated galaxies from The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (DR5) is presented. 1520 isolated galaxies were found in 1.4 steradians of sky. The selection criteria in this so called UNAM-KIAS catalog was implemented from a variation on the criteria developed by Karachentseva 1973 including full redshift information. Through an image processing pipeline that takes advantage from the high resolution (~ 0.4 ''/pix) and high dynamic range of the SDSS images, a uniform g band morphological classification for all these galaxies is presented. We identify 80% (SaSm) spirals (50% later than Sbc types) on one hand, and a scarce population of early-type E(6.5%) and S0(8%) galaxies amounting to 14.5% on the other hand. This magnitude-limited catalog is ~ 80% complete at 16.5, 15.6, 15.0, 14.6 and 14.4 magnitudes in the ugriz bands respectively. Some representative physical properties including SDSS magnitudes and color distributions, color-color diagrams, absolute magnitude-color, and concentration-color diagrams as a function of morphological type are presented. The UNAM-KIAS Morphological Atlas is also released along with this paper. For each galaxy of type later than Sa, a mosaic is presented that includes: (1) a g-band logarithmic image, (2) a g band filtered-enhanced image where a Gaussian kernel of various sizes was applied and (3) an RGB color image from the SDSS database. For E/S0/Sa galaxies, in addition to the images in (1), (2) and (3), plots of r band surface brightness and geometric profiles (ellipticity, Position Angle PA and A4/B4 coefficients of the Fourier series expansions of deviations of a pure ellipse) are provided...Comment: 40 pages, 17 figures and 3 table

L-Citrulline and its effect in endurance sports, a sistematic review

En los últimos años, el estudio del suplemento L-Citrulina ha cobrado importancia debido a sus posibles efectos sobre el rendimiento deportivo. La L-Citrulina es un aminoácido no esencial que se obtiene a través de fuentes tanto vegetales como animales. Es precursor del Óxido Nítrico y de la Arginina, que intervienen de forma protagonista durante el ciclo de la urea. Estos factores presuponen que el consumo de este suplemento podrá tener ciertos beneficios sobre el rendimiento deportivo. Por lo tanto, el objetivo de este estudio fue el de realizar una revisión sistemática con la que comprobar la eficacia de la L-Citrulina o el Malato de L-Citrulina sobre varios parámetros determinantes en el rendimiento deportivo: potencia, resistencia, trabajo, así como en las siguientes otras variables: percepción subjetiva del esfuerzo y factores fisiológicos. El estudió estuvo centrado en deportes de resistencia en concreto. Para ello, se realizó una búsqueda de la literatura existente hasta la fecha de aquellos estudios que analizaban el rendimiento deportivo en deportes de resistencia tras el consumo de L-Citrulina. Se obtuvieron un total de 7 trabajos con los que se realizó esta revisión sistemática. Tras el análisis de los trabajos encontrados, se podría decir que la L-Citrulina o Malato de L-Citrulina tiene un efecto positivo sobre el rendimiento deportivo. Sin embargo, se debería de establecer un consenso en la estandarización de los test realizados en los estudios para poder afirmar con evidencia significativa que este suplemento tiene una afectación clara sobre el rendimiento de los deportistas.In the last years, the study of L-Citrulline as a supplement has been gaining interest due to its possible applications over the performance in sports. L-Citrulline is a non-essential aminoacid which can be obtained from vegetable or animal sources. This supplement is a precursor of Nitric Oxide, Arginine and has a principal role in the urea cycle. These factors presuppose that the consume of this ergogenic aid could have positive effects over the sport performance. The purpose of this study was to make a systematic review with which verify the efficacy of L-Citrulline or Citrulline Malate over various determinants parameters over the sport performance and other variables such as perception of effort and physiological factors in endurance sports. To achieve this objective, a research of the existent studies referred to the analysis of the sport performance after the consumption L-Citrulline was made. Finally, 7 studies were obtained and used to make this systematic review. After the analysis of the collected data it can be said that L-Citrulline or Citrulline Malate might have a positive impact over the sport performance. Nevertheless, a consensus must be made in order to achieve the standardization of the protocols and test used in the different studies to say that this supplement has a significant positive impact over the athletes performance

Standardization of activated sludge for biodegradation tests

Activated sludges are an inoculum source commonly used in biodegradation studies, as wastewater treatment facilities constitute an entry point to the environment for many chemicals. In this paper, the main issues relating to the use of activated sludge in biodegradability tests are presented. Special attention is also devoted to discussing the factors affecting both the activity of the microbial communities and the test results. After a short survey of the state of the art of microbiology of activated sludge, the paper focuses on the methods used to reduce the variations in the diversity, quality and quantity of these communities. Finally, use of surrogates as reference materials in biodegradability tests is discussed

Native breeds of the oaxaqueña Mixteca of México

The Mixteca region is one of the most important areas of the Pacific Mexico with respect to the extensive farming, where the special richness of the Creole population of hens, sheep, goats, cattle, pigs and in a lower wake horses, turkeys and honey bees. Instead of this richness and its socio-economic importance in this region, few scientific studies have been developed about these animals. In this communication, we are developing a description of the most important population existing in this region, pointing out some aspects about their origin, geographical localization, management system, etc. Presently, the lines proposed by FAO for the conservation of the genetic resources is sensitising Mexico and all Latin-America for the conservation of their own resources. In this way, we can stand out the decay of this region in the enclosing of their breed in the international scientific community, what it is shown in the absence of most of them in publications such us the world watch list or the DAD-IS program.La Mixteca es una de las regiones ganaderas extensivas más importantes del México Pacífico, destacada por su gran riqueza en poblaciones criollas de gallinas, ovinos, caprinos, bovinos, porcinos y en menor medida equinos, pavos y abejas. A pesar de esta riqueza y de su importante repercusión socio-económica en esta región, son escasos los estudios científicos realizados sobre estos animales. En este trabajo se realiza una descripción de las principales poblaciones existentes, precisando algunos aspectos sobre su origen, ubicación geográfica, sistema de manejo, producción y opciones de futuro. En la actualidad las líneas impuestas por el programa global de la FAO para la conservación de los recursos genéticos está sensibilizando a México y a toda América Latina en pro de la conservación de sus propios recursos. En este sentido cabe destacar el retraso de esta región en incorporar sus razas a la comunidad científica internacional, lo que queda demostrado por la ausencia de la mayoría de ellos en publicaciones como el World Watch List o el programa DAD-IS

Cierre quirúrgico en flexión versus extensión en artroplastias totales de rodilla

Se ha realizado un estudio prospectivo de 44 pacientes con gonartrosis primaria que fueron intervenidos con artroplastia total de rodilla con el objeto de determinar las diferencies en cuanto a la movilidad final de la rodilla dependiendo del cierre quirúrgico en flexión o en extensión. Se formaron dos grupos con similares características de homogeneidad respecto al sexo, edad, peso corporal y arco de movilidad previa, no existiendo diferencies significativas entre los grupos en la valoración preoperatoria. En el primer grupo se incluyeron 22 pacientes donde se había realizado la sutura de la cápsula articular y del plano muscular y cutáneo en flexión de 70º a 90º; el segundo grupo estaba formado por otros 22 pacientes en los que se realizó la sutura con la rodilla en extensión completa. En todos los pacientes se implantó el mismo modelo artroplástico y todos siguieron el mismo protocolo de rehabilitación postoperatoria. La evaluación clínica se realizó en el momento del alta hospitalaria, al mes, tres y seis meses, siguiendo la escala del Hospital for Special Surgery. Se apreció un arco de movilidad y puntuación clínica mayor en el grupo de rodillas suturadas en extensión, con una diferencia estadísticamente significativa, en los controles realizados en el alta hospitalaria y al mes de la intervención. A los seis meses no se apreciaron diferencias entre ambos grupos. La posición de la rodilla en el cierre quirúrgico de una artroplastia no afecta a su funcionalidad.In a prospective study, 44 patients with primary osteoarthritis of the knee undergoing total knee arthroplasty were compared to determine whether surgical closure of the entire wound in flexion had any effect on the postoperative range of motion over a period of six months. In twenty-two patients the knee was surgically closed in 70º to 90º flexion. In the second group of 22 patients, knees were closed in extension. There was no significant difference between groups respect to age, gender, weight and preoperative range of motion. All of the patients were operated on by the same team of surgeons and with the same type of prosthesis. Both groups of patients received a standardized exercise program during their hospitalization. All patients were evaluated following the parameters of the Hospital for Special Surgery score at discharge from the hospital, at first month, third and sixth month after operation. At all the intervals, both the flexion measurements and function scores were better in the flexion closure group, although we only found statically significant difference at discharge and at the first month postoperatively. On maximum entropy priors and a most likely likelihood in auditing

There are two basic questions auditors and accountants must consider when developing test and estimation applications using Bayes' Theorem: What prior probability function should be used and what likelihood function should be used. In this paper we propose to use a maximum entropy prior probability function MEP with the most likely likelihood function MLL in the Quasi-Bayesian QB model introduced by McCray (1984). It is defined on an adequate parameter. Thus procedure only needs an expected value of θ0 known (in this paper the expected tainting) to obtain a MEP all an auditor or accountant need to supply are the range, as with any other prior, and the expected tainting, θ0. We will see some practical applications of the methodology proposed about internal control evaluation in auditing

Osteonecrosis del platillo tibial interno: A propósito de dos casos

Presentamos dos casos de osteonecrosis idiomática del platillo tibial interno que aparecieron en mujeres. En ellas se dieron las características clínicas habituales de la enfermedad (inicio súbito de dolor intenso en rodilla sin traumatismo previo claramente diferenciado y marcada sensibilidad local en la zona interna de la rodilla) junto a radiografías iniciales normales ó con leves cambios degenerativos (gammagrafía ósea y/ó resonancia magnética nuclear.) En las dos pacientes el proceso evolucionó hacia una gonalgia intensa resistente a la medicación y con cambios degenerativos asociados y fue necesaria la implantación de sendas artroplastias totales de rodilla.We report two cases of osteonocrosis of the medial tibial plateau with typical symptoms (sudden onset of pain at the knee, and marked tenderness over the medial tibial plateau). Initial roentgenograms are within normal limits or showed mild degenerative joint changes, being necessary a magnetic resonance imaging to achieve a diagnosis. The two cases we report didn't follow the typical evolution of the process (which is self-limiting in a period of 6 to 12 months), being necessary in both of them, a total knee replacement
