The increase in urban land and the continuous increment of road network experienced by littoral
zones contribute to the loss, degradation and isolation of both terrestrial and aquatic habitats in
which amphibians spend the different stages of their life cycle. The aim of this study is to explain
the relationship between the characteristics of 17 seasonal ponds located in the Atlantic littoral of
Cádiz province (SW Spain), the land uses in their surroundings, the road network, and the diversity
of amphibian species. Our results show that amphibian richness is higher in larger ponds with
longer hydroperiods, surrounded by forest and scrubland, and away from the nearest road. Roads,
and in particular secondary roads, have a great and negative impact on amphibian richness because
the shorter the distance between the pond and the road was, the fewer breeding species
were found. From the data obtained in this study, we have classified the ponds according to their
status of conservation. This classification demonstrates that 94% of the studied ponds require immediate
measures to be taken in order to reduce the negative impact of habitat fragmentation
caused by roads. Finally, in order to maintain healthy amphibian populations at the long term,
forests and scrublands surrounding ponds must be protected, and connectivity among ponds, as
well as with the terrestrial habitats in the vicinity, must be ensured. Preventing amphibians from
road kills during their migration movements can be achieved by means of constructing underpasses
and tunnels in hot spots.
Broadband transverse susceptibility in multiferroic Y-type hexaferrite Ba0.5Sr1.5Zn2Fe12O22
Producción CientíficaNoncollinear spin systems with magnetically induced ferroelectricity from changes in spiral magnetic ordering have attracted significant interest in recent research due to their remarkable magnetoelectric effects with promising applications. Single phase multiferroics are of great interest for these new multifunctional devices, being Y-type hexaferrites good candidates, and among them the ZnY compounds due to their ordered magnetic behaviour over room temperature. Polycrystalline Y type hexaferrites with composition Ba0.5Sr1.5Zn2Fe2O22 (BSZFO) were sintered in 1050 °C–1250 °C temperature range. Transverse susceptibility measurements carried out on these BSZFO samples in the temperature range 80–350 K with DC fields up to ± 5000 Oe reveal different behaviour depending on the sintering temperature. Sample sintered at 1250 °C is qualitatively different, suggesting a mixed Y and Z phase like CoY hexaferrites. Sintering at lower temperatures produce single phase Y-type, but the transverse susceptibility behaviour of the sample sintered at 1150 °C is shifted at temperatures 15 K higher. Regarding the DC field sweeps the observed behaviour is a peak that shifts to lower values with increasing temperature, and the samples corresponding to single Y phase exhibit several maxima and minima in the 250 K–330 K range at low DC applied field as a result of the magnetic field induced spin transitions in this compound.Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades; Agencia Estatal de Investigación with FEDER (MAT2016-80784-P
Porous Titanium for Biomedical Applications: Evaluation of the Conventional Powder Metallurgy Frontier and Space-Holder Technique
Titanium and its alloys are reference materials in biomedical applications because of
their desirable properties. However, one of the most important concerns in long-term prostheses
is bone resorption as a result of the stress-shielding phenomena. Development of porous titanium
for implants with a low Young’s modulus has accomplished increasing scientific and technological
attention. The aim of this study is to evaluate the viability, industrial implementation and potential
technology transfer of different powder-metallurgy techniques to obtain porous titanium with
stiffness values similar to that exhibited by cortical bone. Porous samples of commercial pure titanium
grade-4 were obtained by following both conventional powder metallurgy (PM) and space-holder
technique. The conventional PM frontier (Loose-Sintering) was evaluated. Additionally, the technical
feasibility of two different space holders (NH4HCO3 and NaCl) was investigated. The microstructural
and mechanical properties were assessed. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of titanium porous
structures with porosities of 40% were studied by Finite Element Method (FEM) and compared with
the experimental results. Some important findings are: (i) the optimal parameters for processing
routes used to obtain low Young’s modulus values, retaining suitable mechanical strength; (ii) better
mechanical response was obtained by using NH4HCO3 as space holder; and (iii) Ti matrix hardening
when the interconnected porosity was 36–45% of total porosity. Finally, the advantages and limitations
of the PM techniques employed, towards an industrial implementation, were discussed.Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness of Spain Grant MAT2015-71284-PJunta de Andalucía Grant P12-TEP-1401Comisión Nacional de Investigación, Científica y Tecnológica (CONICYT) of the Chilean government project FONDECYT 1116086
Fracture toughness of cemented carbides obtained by electrical resistance sintering
The unique combination of hardness, toughness and wear resistance exhibited by WC-Co cemented carbides (hardmetals) has made them a preeminent material choice for extremely demanding applications, such as metal cutting/forming tools or mining bits, in which improved and consistent performance together with high reliability are required. The high fracture toughness values exhibited by hardmetals are mainly due to ductile ligament bridging and crack deflection (intrinsic to carbides). In this work two WC-Co grades obtained by using the electric resistance sintering technique are studied. The relationships between the process parameters (cobalt volume fraction, sintering current and time, die materials, etc.), the microstructural characteristics (porosity, cobalt volume fraction, carbide grain size, binder thickness and carbide contiguity) and mechanical properties (Vickers hardness and fracture toughness) are established and discussed. Also the presence of microstructural anisotropy and residual stresses is studied. The sintering process at 7 kA, 600 ms and 100 MPa, in an alumina die, followed by a treatment of residual stress relief (800 °C, 2 h in high vacuum), allows to obtain WC-Co pellets with the best balance between an homogeneous microstructure and mechanical behaviour.EU for funding this research with in the framework of the EU 7th Framework FoF.NMP.2013-10 608729 EFFIPRO Projec
Mandibular ameloblastoma. A review of the literature and presentation of six cases
Ameloblastoma is a benign odontogenic tumour of epithelial origin without induction in the connective tissue. In treating this type of tumour, it is important to assess the clinical type (solid,
multicystic, unicystic, peripheral), localisation, and size of the tumour as well as age of the patient. Articles have recently been published with the purpose of providing updated knowledge
and therapeutic approaches to ameloblastoma. We present six cases of patients with localised mandibular ameloblastoma who were treated during the last seven years. We present data on
clinical appearance, histological characteristics, and therapeutic approach that was used, which included excision of the lesion, perilesional drilling of the bone, or block resection, according
to the type of ameloblastoma. Lastly, we analysed follow-up measures and the rate of recurrence in these patients. The aim of this paper is to review the concepts relating to ameloblastoma
that have been published recently and to assess their influence on the clinical attitude taken when facing this pathology, using our experience with ameloblastoma as a starting point to illu strate this discussion
Broadband transverse susceptibility in multiferroic Y-type hexaferrite Ba0.5Sr1.5Co2Fe2O22
Producción CientíficaSingle phase multiferroics in which ordered magnetism and ferroelectricity coexist, are of great interest for new multifunctional devices, and among them Y-type hexaferrites are good candidates. Transverse susceptibility measurements, which have been proved to be a versatile tool to study singular properties of bulk and nanoparticle magnetic systems, have been carried out with a broadband system on polycrystalline Y type hexaferrites with composition Ba0.5Sr1.5Co2Fe2O22, optimal to exhibit multiferroic properties. In the temperature range 80–350 K transverse susceptibility measurements with DC fields up to ±5000 Oe reveal different behaviour depending on the sintering temperature. The thermal evolution of the anisotropy field peak exhibits four regions with different slopes: positive in 80–130 K, negative in 130–200 K, constant in 200–280 K and negative in 280–350 K, which can be considered a signature of spin transitions in this compound.Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades; Agencia Estatal de Investigación with FEDER ( project MAT2016-80784-P
Effect of the Vitrification of Human Oocytes on the Binding Capacity and Acrosome Status of Human Sperm
To know the molecular aspects that occur in the process of human sperm binding to the human zona pellucida (ZP) is one of the great challenges of reproduction biology. Moreover knowing if the fertilization process may be affected by cryopreservation of female gametes is still another issue discussed in the literature. Based on this, the main objective of this study was to determine whether the oocyte vitrification may alter the interaction of sperm with the glycocalyx of ZP and show whether these oocytes lost the ability to induce the acrosome reaction in sperm. According to our results the oocyte closed vitrification method (S3) does not alter the ability of the sperm binding to the zona pellucida, and their ability to induce the acrosome reaction.
