    Food Insecurity In San Pedro, Ecuador: The Association Of Food Insecurity With Dietary Diversity And Bmi

    Background: Limited research has examined the association between food insecurity and both dietary diversity and body mass index (BMI) in rural, Ecuador. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted on a sample of 237 patients and family members visiting a primary care community clinic. To determine food security level, the Escala Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Seguridad Alimentaria (ELCSA) was employed. Outcome was measured using the Household Dietary Diversity Score (HDDS) and BMI was deduced using measured height and weight. These measures were then evaluated in their associations with food security level, adjusting for wealth stratum for the HDDS variable. Results: As severity of food insecurity increased, the prevalence of normal weight decreased and the prevalence of overweight increased. However, these findings did not reach statistical significance (p=0.316). A statistically significant association was found between HFI and HDDS: as severity of food insecurity increased, low HDDS increased substantially from 18.2% to 54.7%, while high HDDS decreased from 63.7% to 22.7% (p Conclusions: Future studies should follow the impacts of food insecurity on both dietary diversity and BMI given the ongoing nutrition transition in Ecuador

Centro de Ciencias Fisicas e MatematicasNo presente trabalho investigamos vários aspectos relacionados com a existência de invariantes em sistemas dinâmicos contínuos e não-lineares. Apresentamos relações de recorrência para gerar os termos presentes nas densidades e fluxos da equação de Korteweg-de Vries e nas densidades da equação modificada de Korteweg-de Vries. Nossas relações são baseadas na observação empírica de que, para um dado rank r, o conjunto {P2r} de todas as partições do inteiro 2r contém todos os monômios de {Xr-1} e {Tr}. As relações são facilmente implementáveis em máquinas capazes de efetuar manipulações algébricas. Obtivemos, através de nossas relações de recorrência, quatro novos invariantes para a equação de Korteweg-de Vries e três para a equação modificada de Korteweg-de Vries. Testamos a validade de conjecturas estabelecidas recentemente por Torriani usando análise combinatorial. Além disso, analisamos três métodos encontrados na literatura recente para a obtenção de constante de movimento de equações de evolução não-lineares. São eles: uma relação entre constantes de movimento e equações variacionais; um procedimento para a obtenção de constantes de movimento associadas a cada simetria de Lie da equação diferencial que descreve o sistema; e a obtenção de novas constantes a partir de constantes conhecidas usando os operadores das transformações infinitesimais que deixam a equação de evolução invariante. São feitas aplicações destes métodos a equações conhecidas com ênfase em física atômica e óptica quântica

    El objetivo de este artículo es analizar A Nightmare on Elm Street, entendiendo dicho filme como un texto cultural que, al igual que otros relatos fílmicos slasher, estaba influenciado por el discurso conservador del momento. En esta cinta, las barreras que separan la realidad de la fantasía se difuminan para crear una confusión que impide diferenciar claramente ambos mundos; un hecho que sucedía de manera similar en el mundo real con el asesino en serie, cuya simplificación lo había convertido en un ser de inagotable maldad y deshumanizado. Asimismo, Freddy Krueger, el protagonista de nuestra cinta, reúne una serie de atributos que lo acercan a la realidad del momento, siendo un monstruo aterrador debido a la influencia tan directa que, en aquellos momentos, ejercen en él las tensiones y acontecimientos que estaban sucediendo en el país en aquellos momentos.The aim of this article is to analyze A Nightmare on Elm Street from a Cultural Studies perspective, understanding it as a historical source which offers a deeper knowledge of the eighties. In the United States, those years were marked by a conservative discourse that permeated many products of the popular culture, such as horror movies. Nonetheless, A Nightmare is different from these other movies. The boundaries between fantasy and reality boundaries were blurred to create confusion in order to make it impossible to differentiate between the two worlds. Indeed, this was the same thing that happened in the real world with the serial killer, who was simplified, turned into an evil being without any human traits. Likewise, the protagonist Freddy Krueger displays several attributes that turn him in a frightening monster, a representation directly influenced by the historical tensions and events in the country at that time

    Este trabajo pretende contribuir a una mejor comprensión del proceso de evaluación del desempeño docente en el contexto universitario, evidenciando la inoperancia y poca validez del cuestionario como mecanismo para el perfeccionamiento de la educación superior. El artículo tiene como propósito analizar las perspectivas de los alumnos de licenciatura (pregrado) respecto al cuestionario de opinión con el que valoran periódicamente el desempeño de sus profesores, para juzgar su pertinencia y utilidad como instrumento de evaluación. Se trata de una investigación de corte cualitativo mediante la modalidad de estudio de casos. El caso estuvo representado por las Unidades Xochimilco y Cuajimalpa de la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM). La perspectiva teórica de la evaluación docente también se sitúa en un marco de evaluación cualitativa y comprensiva. Los resultados se agrupan en tres bloques referidos al cuestionario de evaluación docente que los alumnos responden: 1) opiniones del alumnado sobre el cuestionario, 2) usos de los resultados de la evaluación docente, y 3) propuesta para evaluar el desempeño docente. Entre las conclusiones se destaca que el proceso de evaluación está asociado de forma prioritaria con el otorgamiento de estímulos económicos a los profesores y tangencialmente con la mejora de la calidad de la enseñanza. Esta situación discrepa con una visión muy extendida que vincula los resultados de la evaluación docente con el mejoramiento de la educaciónThe purpose of this paper is to contribute to a better understanding of the process of evaluation of teaching performance in the university context, evidencing the ineffectiveness and poor validity of the questionnaire as a mechanism for the improvement of higher education. The paper analyzes the perspectives of undergraduate students about a questionnaire with which they periodically assess the performance of their professors, to judge their relevance and usefulness as an evaluation tool. It is a qualitative research through the case study modality. The case was represented by the Xochimilco and Cuajimalpa Units of the Autonomous Metropolitan University (UAM). The theoretical perspective of teacher evaluation is also placed in a framework of qualitative and comprehensive evaluation. The results are grouped into three blocks referring to the teacher evaluation questionnaire that the students answer: 1) student opinions on the questionnaire, 2) uses of the results of the teacher evaluation, and 3) proposal to evaluate the teaching performance. Among the conclusions, it is emphasized that the evaluation process is associated in a priority way with the granting of economic stimuli to teachers and tangentially with the improvement of the quality of teaching.     “De Manhattan Pa El Bronx:” Dembow as the Sound of dominicanidad Ausente

    This research project begins with the question, what is the role of music in the lives and identities of contemporary Dominicanyorkers? As a Dominicanyorker and a student of sociology, this project begins from the embodied knowledge that Dembow music is actively doing something important in relation to how Dominican migrants and their descendants navigate their Dominican identity and belonging in present-day New York City. I claim that Dembow is the sound of a particular urban condition of diasporic identities, what I call following Dominican studies, “dominicanidad ausente.” To fully understand the role of music in identity development, I use ethnographic research, including interviews, and media content analysis to analyze how urban Dominican sonic practices reconstruct and expand dominicanidad as worldmaking separate from the Dominican Republic. I build upon Lorgia García Peña’s conceptual work to show that dominicanidad ausente is the historical condition of Dominican diasporic identity/identification defined at once by the position of both (1) experiencing one\u27s Dominican identity always in relation with the yearning to return to the Dominican Republic, while (2) actively asserting one’s belonging to a diasporic community in the present and future.
