In this piece of research we examine a structure that linguistically encodes a double negation reading in simple sentences in Catalan. This structure contains a sentential negative adverb and an indefinite which is the complement of a preposition that functions as an adjunct. We claim that words like res can behave as free choice items or as n-words because they cause domain expansion, both in broad domains (in a non-negative context) and in minimal domains (in negative contexts). Formally, we argue that these words bear a morphosyntactic feature that has to be checked by an operator endowed with a feature of the same kind. When res is in an adjoined prepositional phrase, the structure favours the checking of this feature in its Specifier: [[ Neg - s ] res[+s]]. If, in addition, there is a second Neg operator in the sentence, double negation necessarily obtains

A new approach to Negative Concord : Catalan as a case in point

Altres ajuts: acords transformatius de la UABPublished online: 25 August 2023In this paper, we revisit the phenomenon of Negative Concord focusing on the Strict vs. Non-Strict divide. With Catalan as a case in point, we show that Negative Concord Items (NCIs) are not negative quantifiers (NQs) or polarity items (PIs) but inherently negative indefinites by virtue of carrying a negative feature [neg] that contributes a negative semantics to the proposition and is subject to a syntax-phonology constraint that forces it to overtly c-command Tense in compliance with Jespersen's NegFirst principle. We argue that to satisfy such constraint, [neg] can disembody from the NCI via overt Move F(eature) to adjoin at a pre-Infl(ection) position and be Spelled-Out homophonous to the negative marker. The Strict vs. Non-Strict contrast follows from whether [neg] always moves independently from the rest of the NCI via Move F (Strict Negative Concord) or predates, whenever possible, on another movement of the NCI that places [neg] in the required pre-Infl position (Non-Strict Negative Concord) thus not having to disembody

On the status of NCIs : An experimental investigation on so-called Strict NC languages

Altres ajuts: acords transformatius de la UABPublished online by Cambridge University Press: 25 August 2023. First ViewThis paper investigates the status of Negative Concord Items (NCIs) in three so-called Strict Negative Concord (NC) languages (namely, Greek, Romanian, and Russian). An experimental study was designed to gather evidence concerning the speakers' acceptability and interpretation of sequences with argumental NCIs in subject, object, and both positions when dhen/nu/ne were not present. Our results show that NCIs are negative indefinites whose presence in a clausal domain is enough to assign a single negation reading to the whole sequence, thus arguing in support of the hypothesis that in NC structures the minimal semantic requirement to convey single negation is that one or more NCIs encoding a negative feature appear within a sentential domain. We argue that in these structures dhen/nu/ne are the instantiations of a negative feature [neg] disembodied from an indefinite negative NCI in order to obey a syntax-phonology interface constraint

How speakers interpret the negative markers no and no … pas in Catalan

    Get PDF
This paper reports the results of an experimental investigation designed to test the interpretation of the optional doubling of the negative markers no and pas in Expletive Negation (EN) contexts and in preverbal Negative Concord Items (NCI) contexts in Catalan. We show that in EN contexts a negative interpretation of no is preferred to anexpletive one, with non-negative readings being less widespread than expected from what is described in traditional grammars. In NCI contexts the overt presence of no basically contributes to a single negation interpretation, thus confirming the status of Catalan as aNegative Concord language. We also show that, in the absence of discourse environments, pas in both EN and NCI contexts shows a variable interpretation, a characteristic of negative polarity items. Our results indicate that pas does not increase the amount of negative interpretation of no in EN contexts, or of Double Negation in NCI contexts, but is an item dependent on the interpretation of no. We conclude that the strengthening role of Catalan pas (at stage two of Jespersen's cycle), while associated with the expression of metalinguistic negation, does not reverse the truth or falsity of a proposition

Thermal decomposition of CuProp2: In-situ analysis of film and powder pyrolysis

    Get PDF
The thermal decomposition of CuProp2 in the form of film and powder was studied in different atmospheres by means of thermal analysis techniques (TG-MS, TG-IR, EGA), chemical-structural methods (FTIR, XRD, EA) and computational thermochemistry (VASP/PBE). The decomposition mechanism in terms of volatiles evolved was disclosed with the aid of ab-initio modeling; it was found to be dependent on the gas diffusion in and out of the sample and accelerated by a humid atmosphere. In films, the copper redox behavior showed sensitivity to the residual atmosphere. Finally, the role of the metal center is discussed in the frame of a general decomposition mechanism for metal propionates

Epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7-x nanocomposite thin films from colloidal solutions

A methodology of general validity to prepare epitaxial nanocomposite films based on the use of colloidal solutions containing different crystalline preformed oxide nanoparticles (ex situ nanocomposites) is reported. The trifluoroacetate (TFA) metal-organic chemical solution deposition route is used with alcoholic solvents to grow epitaxial YBaCuO (YBCO) films. For this reason stabilizing oxide nanoparticles in polar solvents is a challenging goal. We have used scalable nanoparticle synthetic methodologies such as thermal and microwave-assisted solvothermal techniques to prepare CeO and ZrO nanoparticles. We show that stable and homogeneous colloidal solutions with these nanoparticles can be reached using benzyl alcohol, triethyleneglycol, nonanoic acid, trifluoroacetic acid or decanoic acid as protecting ligands, thereby allowing subsequent mixing with alcoholic TFA solutions. An elaborate YBCO film growth analysis of these nanocomposites allows the identification of the different relevant growth phenomena, e.g. nanoparticles pushing towards the film surface, nanoparticle reactivity, coarsening and nanoparticle accumulation at the substrate interface. Upon mitigation of these effects, YBCO nanocomposite films with high self-field critical currents (J ∼ 3-4 MA cm at 77 K) were reached, indicating no current limitation effects associated with epitaxy perturbation, while smoothed magnetic field dependences of the critical currents at high magnetic fields and decreased effective anisotropic pinning behavior confirm the effectiveness of the novel developed approach to enhance vortex pinning. In conclusion, a novel low cost solution-derived route to high current nanocomposite superconducting films and coated conductors has been developed with very promising features. All authors acknowledge the EU (EU-FP7 NMP-LA-2012-280432 EUROTAPES project). Solution design for low-fluorine trifluoroacetate route to YBa2Cu3O7 films

We present our work in the preparation of metallorganic precursor solutions with reduced fluorine content, able to fulfil the requirements for high-performance superconducting YBCO epitaxial layers as a promising approach to low cost and scalable coated conductors. Six different solutions using different quantities of fluorine and non-fluorine carboxylate precursors with a total amount of fluorine from 10 to 50% that of standard trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) solutions. For stabilization purposes different coordinating agents have been used and the solution rheology has been modified for proper substrate wettability. Thermal decomposition analysis and infrared spectroscopy performed directly in films, have revealed that the decomposition takes place in two consecutive stages around 265 and 310 °C respectively, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis could unveil the chemical reactions taking place in the solution. Using the solutions with 20% fluorine and upon optimization of the growth process parameters, YBCO layers with T and J (77 K) of 90 K and 4 MA cm are obtained. The authors acknowledge the financial support from MICINN (Consolider NANOSELECT, CSD2007-00041, MAT 2011- 28874-C02, MAT2014-51778-C2-2-R also with FEDER support); Generalitat de Catalunya (Pla de Recerca 2014- SGR-753 and XaRMAE), and EU (FP7 NMP-LA-2012- 280432 EUROTAPES project and MP1201 Cost action).Peer Reviewe

    The European-Mediterranean Distributed Accelerometric Data-Base

    Get PDF
International audienceWe created an archive for European acceleration data, based on distributed database of accelerogram waveforms, accessed through the new European Earthquake Data Portal (http://www.seismicportal.eu). Data are open to the scientific and engineering community. Currently the 6 core partners contribute data from 1,379 earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from M1.0 to M7.4. Strong Motion Data are available with epicentral distances up to 1,000 km. Additionally, agencies are encouraged to contribute data. Waveforms included in the database are uniformly processed to create a set of engineering parameters that are used to search the database. In addition to the database, we compiled a survey of the existing accelerometric stations in the Euro-Mediterranean region. We expect this platform to be the basis for growing sharing of European Strong Motion Data in an open environment, in as near to real-time as is possible from network operators
