Renewal of Grammatical Forms in the History of English

    Get PDF
[Abstract] In the development of English, new relative pronouns (whwords) were introduced, while the relative pronouns used in Old English (se/seþe) underwent various restrictions of morphological nature (case, gender and number marking), thus tending to become progressively less frequently used. This paper attempts to describe the distribution of pronominal relativizers in Old and Middle English and reconstruct the conditions for their renewal

    Get PDF
Considering that the first period in the life of a child is the most important for his / her development, it is considered to have trained professionals for the dental care of kids from 0 to 3 years old. They should also be aware of the special attention that children need during their development stage in order to prevent and detect the affective, motor, cognitive and relational alterations. The concepts of “development organizers" are constituted as a basic instrument to build a useful odontopediatric approach. Therefore, it is considered to establish more productive and less traumatic treatment patterns for the child.Fil: Suárez, Cristina Gabriela. Universidad Nacional de Cuyo. Facultad de Odontologí

Social Realism and Censorship in the Spanish novel (1954-1962)

    Get PDF
This paper aims to expose the relationship between the tenets and the practice of the social realist novel in Spain between 1954 and 1962 and the context of book censorship during Francoist dictatorship. Some theoretical explanations on social Realism by the authors themselves will be analysed under the perspective of their needs to overcome censorship. Censors’ responses to some of the most representative novels of this decade will be explained too as factors which determined the hegemony of Realism in the literary field and its later decadence

Effect of amaranth proteins on the RAS system: In vitro, in vivo and ex vivo assays

    Get PDF
The aim of this work was to analyse the hypotensive effect of amaranthprotein/peptides on spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). The mechanism of action of these peptides was studied in vivo and ex vivo. We also tested the effect of protection against gastrointestinal digestion (GID) exerted by an O:W emulsion on the integrity of the antihypertensive peptides. All samples tested produced a decrease in blood pressure (SBP). The animals treated with emulsion (GE) and emulsion+peptide (GE+VIKP) showed the most significant reduction in the SBP (42±2 mmHg and 35±2 mmHg, respectively). The results presented suggest that after GID, a variety of peptides with biological activities were released or were resistant to this process. These peptides play a role in the regulation of the SBP by acting on plasma ACE, plasma renin and the vascular system. These results support the use of amaranth protein/peptides in the elaboration of functional foods for hypertensive individuals.Fil: Suárez, Santiago. Provincia de Buenos Aires. Gobernación. Language contact in Gibraltar English: A pilot study with ICE-GBR

    Get PDF
The variety of English used in Gibraltar has been in contact with a number of European languages, such as Spanish, Italian, Hebrew and Arabic (Moyer, 1998: 216; Suárez-Gómez, 2012: 1746), for more than 300 years. Studies of this variety have traditionally been based on interviews and observation (e.g. Moyer, 1993, 1998; Cal Varela, 1996; Levey, 2008 2015; Weston, 2011, 2013, etc.), and a detailed morphosyntactic description is yet to be published. In this context, the compilation of a reliable Gibraltar corpus using the standards of the International Corpus of English (ICE) will constitute a landmark in the analysis of this lesser known variety of English. In the present paper we describe the ICE project and the current state of the compilation of ICE-GBR. In addition, we present a detailed comparison between the section on press news reports of ICE-GB (standard British English) and ICE-GBR, with the aim of identifying morphosyntactic features that reveal the influence of language contact with Spanish in this territory. We explore variables such as the choice of relativizer (assuming a higher preference for that in GBR, in agreement with Spanish que, the most frequent relativizer, Brucart, 1999: 490), the use of titles and pseudo-titles preceding proper names (which, as shown by Hundt and Kabatek, 2015, are very frequent in English journalese and extremely infrequent in Spanish), and the frequency of the passive voice (expected to be lower in ICE-GBR), among others. A preliminary analysis of these variables reveals that the influence of Spanish on the variety of English used in the Gibraltarian press, at the morphosyntactic level, is almost non-existent, limited to occasional cases of code-switching between the two varieties. We hypothesize that a possible explanation for this strong exonormative allegiance to British English, at least in press news reports, can be found in a strong editorial pressure to reflect the prestigious parent-variety.The authors gratefully acknowledge the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (grants FFI2014-53930-P and FFI2014-51873-REDT)

Manufacturing firms’ export activity: Business and financial cycles overlaps!

    Get PDF
This paper models how the business and financial cycles interact in firms’ export activity. Specifically, we study the influence of macroeconomic variables on the decision to export and on the volume of exports, being controlled by firms’ characteristics. A distinction is made between the firms’ export activity in reaction to increases in external demand after improvements in national competitiveness, and firms’ exporting in response to a reduction in aggregate internal demand. The decision to export depends positively on the countries’ competitiveness variables, and the volume of exports also depends positively on national competitiveness and negatively on growth of internal demand. We also find a positive influence of the leverage of the economy on extensive and intensive export activity. Our results suggest that the financial cycle overlaps with the business cycle in influencing firm export activity decisions

Thermal 3D CFD Simulation with Active Transparent Façade in Buildings

    Get PDF
In recent years active façades have acquired greater importance given their capacity to improve the energy efficiency of buildings. One such type is the so-called Active Transparent Façade (ATF). A 3D numerical model based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and the Finite Element Method (FEM) has been generated to simulate the thermal performance of buildings equipped with this type of façade. This model is introduced for general application and allows the design parameters to be adapted for this system. The case study of Le Corbusier’s proposal for the City of Refuge in Paris, the clearest example of previous use of an ATF is examined. In addition, a proposal is presented for the energy improvement of Le Corbusier’s original solution. In order to do so, the conditions for the supply of air into the ATF cavity and in the mechanical ventilation system are assessed to guarantee comfort conditions
