    Nondiegetic YouTube Advertising: An Eye-Tracking Investigation

    YouTube is an online media site with over one billion hours of user-generated content, and a monthly worldwide viewership averaging over six billion hours. This volume motivates advertisers to reach out to this enormous audience. Advertisers wish to capture the attention of an audience, avoid causing annoyance, and minimize intrusiveness. In this study, a YouTube video tutorial has been used to create five conditions testing reactions to nondiegetic advertising. Participants will be shown one of five versions of the tutorial. Each version includes either no advertisements, or one of the following: A TrueView video advertisement that is not skipped, a TrueView video advertisement that is skipped, a banner advertisement that is not cancelled, or a banner advertisement that is cancelled. Both type and level of intrusiveness of the ad have been manipulated. During viewing, eye-tracking analyses will monitor fixations in specified look zones, and elsewhere onscreen, testing ad attraction and distraction. After viewing, participants will complete a questionnaire designed to elicit their reactions to the advertisement, and ascertain the effect that the advertisement may have had upon their memory/recall, whether or not the level of intrusiveness decreased their enjoyment of the tutorial video, and other advertising and video outcomes.https://engagedscholarship.csuohio.edu/u_poster_2013/1008/thumbnail.jp

    Relative spins and excitation energies of superdeformed bands in 190Hg: Further evidence for octupole vibration

    An experiment using the Eurogam Phase II gamma-ray spectrometer confirms the existence of an excited superdeformed (SD) band in 190Hg and its very unusual decay into the lowest SD band over 3-4 transitions. The energies and dipole character of the transitions linking the two SD bands have been firmly established.     There has been much recent interest in nuclear fission, due in part to a new appreciation of its relevance to astrophysics, stability of superheavy elements, and fundamental theory of neutrino interactions. At the same time, there have been important developments on a conceptual and computational level for the theory.     Ten practical realities for institutional animal care and use committees when evaluating protocols dealing with fish in the field

    Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee’s (IACUCs) serve an important role in ensuring that ethical practices are used by researchers working with vertebrate taxa including fish. With a growing number of researchers working on fish in the field and expanding mandates of IACUCs to regulate field work, there is potential for interactions between aquatic biologists and IACUCs to result in unexpected challenges and misunderstandings. Here we raise a number of issues often encountered by researchers and suggest that they should be taken into consideration by IACUCs when dealing with projects that entail the examination of fish in their natural environment or other field settings. We present these perspectives as ten practical realities along with their implications for establishing IACUC protocols. The ten realities are: (1) fish are diverse; (2) scientific collection permit regulations may conflict with IACUC policies; (3) stakeholder credibility and engagement may constrain what is possible; (4) more (sample size) is sometimes better; (5) anesthesia is not always needed or possible; (6) drugs such as analgesics and antibiotics should be prescribed with care; (7) field work is inherently dynamic; (8) wild fish are wild; (9) individuals are different, and (10) fish capture, handling, and retention are often constrained by logistics. These realities do not imply ignorance on the part of IACUCs, but simply different training and experiences that make it difficult for one to understand what happens outside of the lab where fish are captured and not ordered/purchased/reared, where there are engaged stakeholders, and where there is immense diversity (in size, morphology, behaviour, life-history, physiological tolerances) such that development of rigid protocols or extrapolation from one species (or life-stage, sex, size class, etc.) to another is difficult. We recognize that underlying these issues is a need for greater collaboration between IACUC members (including veterinary professionals) and field researchers which would provide more reasoned, rational and useful guidance to improve or maintain the welfare status of fishes used in field research while enabling researchers to pursue fundamental and applied questions related to the biology of fish in the field. As such, we hope that these considerations will be widely shared with the IACUCs of concerned researchers

    Telepresence and Video Games: The Impact of Image Quality

    This study investigates the impact of video game image quality on telepresence. Past research has demonstrated positive associations between television image quality and presence and video game technology and presence. No study to date, however, has examined the presence effects of video games played in high definition, which is becoming increasingly common due to the diffusion of new TV technologies into homes. This paper reports the results of an experiment in which image quality was manipulated. The results of the study provide some support for image quality affecting telepresence. Specifically, higher quality images in video games led to higher levels of immersion. These findings are discussed along with suggestions for future research
