A Novel Feature Selection Method for Uncertain Features: An Application to the Prediction of Pro-/Anti- Longevity Genes

Understanding the ageing process is a very challenging problem for biologists. To help in this task, there has been a growing use of classification methods (from machine learning) to learn models that predict whether a gene influences the process of ageing or promotes longevity. One type of predictive feature often used for learning such classification models is Protein-Protein Interaction (PPI) features. One important property of PPI features is their uncertainty, i.e., a given feature (PPI annotation) is often associated with a confidence score, which is usually ignored by conventional classification methods. Hence, we propose the Lazy Feature Selection for Uncertain Features (LFSUF) method, which is tailored for coping with the uncertainty in PPI confidence scores. In addition, following the lazy learning paradigm, LFSUF selects features for each instance to be classified, making the feature selection process more flexible. We show that our LFSUF method achieves better predictive accuracy when compared to other feature selection methods that either do not explicitly take PPI confidence scores into account or deal with uncertainty globally rather than using a per-instance approach. Also, we interpret the results of the classification process using the features selected by LFSUF, showing that the number of selected features is significantly reduced, assisting the interpretability of the results. Prioritizing positive feature values: a new hierarchical feature selection method

In this work, we address the problem of feature selection for the classification task in hierarchical and sparse feature spaces, which characterise many real-world applications nowadays. A binary feature space is deemed hierarchical when its binary features are related via generalization-specialization relationships, and is considered sparse when in general the instances contain much fewer “positive” than “negative” feature values. In any given instance, a feature value is deemed positive (negative) when the property associated with the feature has been (has not been) observed for that instance. Although there are many methods for the traditional feature selection problem in the literature, the proper treatment to hierarchical feature structures is still a challenge. Hence, we introduce a novel hierarchical feature selection method that follows the lazy learning paradigm – selecting a feature subset tailored for each instance in the test set. Our strategy prioritizes the selection of features with positive values, since they tend to be more informative – the presence of a relatively rare property is usually a piece of more relevant information than the absence of that property. Experiments on different application domains have shown that the proposed method outperforms previous hierarchical feature selection methods and also traditional methods in terms of predictive accuracy, selecting smaller feature subsets in general

A construção social da ordem e da subversão nos discursos da (e sobre a) população em situação de rua de Belo Horizonte

Tomando como pano de fundo a ideia da formação de um mercado mundial de cidades e sua implicação na produção de um espaço urbano contemporâneo redutor da diversidade, o presente artigo procura revelar a construção social das noções de ordem e subversão nos discursos da população em situação de rua de Belo Horizonte (MG) e dos atores implicados (sociedade domiciliada, entidades de auxílio, representantes da municipalidade, polícia e comerciantes), a partir do quadro teórico-metodológico da análise do discurso francesa. Realizou-se uma observação participante, enfatizando-se as práticas subversivas das pessoas em situação de rua como uma forma de problematizar a associação entre ordem e normalidade e a relação da sociedade com o que ela considera um descartável urbano. Entende-se, portanto, a subversão como uma práxis política necessária para impulsionar a transformação social na direção de uma convivência humana mais afeita à diversidade cultural

RESOLUÇÃO DE PROBLEMAS NA EDUCAÇÃO MATEMÁTICA: CONSTITUIÇÃO DE GRUPOS DE PESQUISA ATUANTES NO BRASIL

In this paper, we aim to analyze/describe how research groups are formed in problem solving active in Brazil, clearing up their leaders, foundation time, geographic regions, states of the federation, higher education institutions, the prevailing fields, research lines, and application sectors. The theoretical contributions are linked to the specific literature on problem solving in mathematics education and the descriptive research survey with a quantitative-qualitative approach. The database consulted was the directory of research groups in Brazil, on August 22, 2022, under the search command “Problem Solving”. From 44 resulting groups, we validated a total number of 24 in the Mathematics education inquiry region. The main results showed an amount of 44 leaders, a predominance of groups with collective leadership (20 groups), and an average foundation of 8,6 years, the long-lived one lasting 30 years of actuation and a significant part having between 2 and 5 years (11 groups), appearing, mainly in 2019 (4 groups). The groups are located in 22 institutions, concentrated in the Southeast and Northeast regions with 10 and 6 groups, respectively, and show a predominant link in the Human Sciences/Education field. Concerning the research lines, the groups have one, two, or even three themes in the core of problem-solving and act, above all, in Basic Education. We point out the need for this collective of researchers to create research networks in order to consolidate the theme to envision the founding of a working group at the International Seminar on Research in Mathematics Education. Neste artigo, objetivamos analisar/descrever como estão constituídos os grupos de pesquisa em Resolução de Problemas atuantes no Brasil, evidenciando seus líderes, tempo de fundação, regiões geográficas, unidades da federação, Instituições de Ensino Superior, áreas predominantes, linhas de investigação e setores de aplicação. Os aportes teórico-metodológicos vinculam-se à literatura específica de Resolução de Problemas na Educação Matemática e à pesquisa descritiva survey com abordagem quanti-qualitativa. O banco de dados consultado foi o Diretório dos Grupos de Pesquisa no Brasil, na data de 22 de agosto de 2022, sob o comando de busca “Resolução de Problemas”. Dos 44 grupos resultantes, validamos um total de 24 na região de inquérito da Educação Matemática. Os resultados principais apontaram um acumulado de 44 líderes, predomínio de grupos com liderança coletiva (20 grupos) e média de fundação de 8,6 anos, tendo o mais longevo 30 anos de atuação e grande parte possuindo entre 2 e 5 anos (11 grupos), surgindo, principalmente, em 2019 (4 grupos). Os grupos estão alocados em 22 instituições, concentrados nas regiões Sudeste e Nordeste, com 10 e 6 grupos, respectivamente, e apresentam vínculo predominante na área das Ciências Humanas/Educação. Sobre as linhas de pesquisa, os grupos possuem uma, duas e/ou até três temáticas no cerne da Resolução de Problemas e atuam, sobretudo, na Educação Básica. Argumentamos pela necessidade desse coletivo de pesquisadores formarem redes de pesquisa no trato de consolidar a temática e vislumbrar a fundação de um Grupo de Trabalho no Seminário Internacional de Pesquisa em Educação Matemática

IPESE: UMA ANÁLISE DA PERFORMANCE SOCIOECONÔMICA DOS MUNICÍPIOS BAIANOS

The Index of Socioeconomic Performance – IPESE is an indicator that aims to measure the capacity and the quality in offering basic services to the population in each municipality in Bahia. The index is the result of the association of three dimensions: health, education and economy, separated in 16 different indicators. The IPESE is the result of an arithmetic mean of the obtained values in the three components: Index of Health Status – INS, Index of Education Status – INE, and Index of Economics and Finances – IEF. The result of the municipality shows its position inside the IPESE, which goes from 0 to 1, and the higher results indicate the best performances. The database used to the IPESE calculation, are administrative records available in DATASUS, IBGE and MTE/Caged/Rais. The presented results for the 417 municipalities in Bahia for 2012, indicate that a good part of the municipalities are medium/low level, considering the established goals in the indicators, showing that there’s still a notable space for a government acting through public policies to decrease socioeconomic inequalities.O Índice de Performance Socioeconômica – IPESE, é um indicador que tem por objetivo medir a capacidade dos municípios baianos em ofertar serviços básicos à sua população e a qualidade destes serviços prestados. O índice é resultado da agregação de três dimensões: saúde, educação e economia, desmembradas em um conjunto de 16 indicadores. O IPESE é o produto da média aritmética dos valores obtidos nos três índices componentes: Índice do Nível de Saúde – INS, Índice do Nível de Educação – INE e Índice de Economia e Finanças – IEF. O resultado do indicador de um município aponta a posição relativa deste no IPESE, variando entre 0 e 1, e os valores mais elevados indicam os melhores desempenhos. Os dados utilizados para cálculo são de registros administrativos disponíveis no DATASUS, IBGE e MTE/Caged/Rais. Os resultados apresentados para os 417 municípios baianos, em 2012, indicam que boa parte dos municípios está em nível médio / baixo, considerando as metas estabelecidas nos indicadores, demonstrando que ainda há um espaço considerável para a atuação do estado por meio de políticas públicas a fim de mitigar as desigualdades socioeconômicas. Ações de enfermagem na cardiopatia congênita

The aim was to analyze the nurses' coping in the treatment of congenital heart disease. This is an exploratory-descriptive literature study of qualitative origin, carried out in an electronic database of Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), Database in Nursing (BDENF) and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) with a time frame of the last five years in Portuguese and English. A sample of 7 studies was obtained, all published in nursing journals, among the findings was the fundamental role of nursing action in the process of congenital heart disease. It is concluded that a newborn, admitted to an Intensive Care Unit, due to congenital heart disease, is predisposed to several other problems, causing some risks, requiring nursing care aimed at possible diagnoses that are affected.Objetivou-se analisar o enfrentamento do enfermeiro no tratamento da cardiopatia congênita. Trata-se de um estudo da literatura de caráter exploratório-descritivo e de origem qualitativa, realizada em banco de dados eletrônicos Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS), Banco de Dados em Enfermagem (BDENF) e Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) com recorte temporal dos últimos cinco anos em português e inglês. Obteve-se uma amostra de 7 estudos, todos publicados em revistas de enfermagem, entre os achados foi notório o papel fundamental da ação da enfermagem no processo da cardiopatia congênita. Conclui-se que um recém-nascido, internado em uma Unidade de Terapia Intensiva, em decorrência de cardiopatia congênita, está predisposto a diversos outros problemas, acarretando alguns riscos, sendo necessário um cuidado de enfermagem voltado aos possíveis diagnósticos que são acometidos
