    "Magic" numbers in Smale's 7th problem

    Smale's 7-th problem concerns N-point configurations on the 2-dim sphere which minimize the logarithmic pair-energy V_0(r) = -ln r averaged over the pairs in a configuration; here, r is the chordal distance between the points forming a pair. More generally, V_0(r) may be replaced by the standardized Riesz pair-energy V_s(r)= (r^{-s} -1)/s, which becomes - ln r in the limit s to 0, and the sphere may be replaced by other compact manifolds. This paper inquires into the concavity of the map from the integers N>1 into the minimal average standardized Riesz pair-energies v_s(N) of the N-point configurations on the 2-sphere for various real s. It is known that v_s(N) is strictly increasing for each real s, and for s<2 also bounded above, hence "overall concave." It is (easily) proved that v_{-2}(N) is even locally strictly concave, and that so is v_s(2n) for s<-2. By analyzing computer-experimental data of putatively minimal average Riesz pair-energies v_s^x(N) for s in {-1,0,1,2,3} and N in {2,...,200}, it is found that {v}_{-1}^x(N) is locally strictly concave, while v_s^x(N) is not always locally strictly concave for s in {0,1,2,3}: concavity defects occur whenever N in C^{x}_+(s) (an s-specific empirical set of integers). It is found that the empirical map C^{x}_+(s), with s in {-2,-1,0,1,2,3}, is set-theoretically increasing; moreover, the percentage of odd numbers in C^{x}_+(s), s in {0,1,2,3}, is found to increase with s. The integers in C^{x}_+(0) are few and far between, forming a curious sequence of numbers, reminiscent of the "magic numbers" in nuclear physics. It is conjectured that the "magic numbers" in Smale's 7-th problem are associated with optimally symmetric optimal-energy configurations.Comment: 109 pages, of which 30 are numerical data tables.     A dynamic multibody model of the physiological knee to predict internal loads during movement in gravitational field

    Obtaining tibio-femoral (TF) contact forces, ligament deformations and loads during daily life motor tasks would be useful to better understand the aetiopathogenesis of knee joint diseases or the effects of ligament reconstruction and knee arthroplasty. However, methods to obtain this information are either too simplified or too computationally demanding to be used for clinical application. A multibody dynamic model of the lower limb reproducing knee joint contact surfaces and ligaments was developed on the basis of magnetic resonance imaging. Several clinically relevant conditions were simulated, including resistance to hyperextension, varus\u2013valgus stability, anterior\u2013posterior drawer, loaded squat movement. Quadriceps force, ligament deformations and loads, and TF contact forces were computed. During anterior drawer test the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) was maximally loaded when the knee was extended (392\ua0N) while the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) was much more stressed during posterior drawer when the knee was flexed (319\ua0N). The simulated loaded squat revealed that the anterior fibres of ACL become inactive after 60\ub0 of flexion in conjunction with PCL anterior bundle activation, while most components of the collateral ligaments exhibit limited length changes. Maximum quadriceps and TF forces achieved 3.2 and 4.2 body weight, respectively. The possibility to easily manage model parameters and the low computational cost of each simulation represent key points of the present project. The obtained results are consistent with in vivo measurements, suggesting that the model can be used to simulate complex and clinically relevant exercises

    Immunohistochemical characterization of the anti-Müllerian hormone receptor type 2 (AMHR-2) in human testes

    Purpose In males, AMH is secreted by immature Sertoli cells; following exposure to endogenous androgens, Sertoli cells undergo a process of maturation which ultimately inhibits AMH expression to undetectable levels in the serum. However, expression of AMH receptor (AMHR-2) has never been studied in human testes, and high intratubular concentrations of AMH have been reported in recent literature. We therefore assessed expression of AMHR-2 in several testicular tissue samples by immunohistochemistry (IHC). Methods The IHC method was first validated on tissue samples from healthy human testis (n = 2) and from marmoset ovary (n = 1). The same method was then used for assessment on testicular histopathology specimens from patients with mixed atrophy (MA, n = 2), spermatogenetic arrest (SA, n = 2), Sertoli cell-only syndrome (SCO, n = 1), Klinefelter syndrome (KS, n = 1), and nonseminomatous germ cell tumors (NSGCT, n = 1). Tissue samples from two subjects at different pubertal stages (AndroProtect (AP), aged 5 and 14 years) with hematological malignancies were also retrieved. Results In adult men, AMHR-2 was expressed on peritubular mesenchymal cells, with patterns closely mirroring alpha-smooth muscle actin expression. Similar patterns were preserved in almost all conditions; however, in nonseminomatous germ cell tumors the tissue architecture was lost, including AMHR-2 expression. More positive and diffuse staining was observed in tissue samples from prepubertal testes. Conclusions In specimens from both healthy and affected testes, AMHR-2 expression appears weaker in adult than in prepubertal tissue sections. The persistence of AMHR-2 expression seemingly hints at a possible effect of intratesticular AMH on the tubular walls

    Aerobic growth of Rhodococcus aetherivorans BCP1 using selected naphthenic acids as the sole carbon and energy sources

    Naphthenic acids (NAs) are an important group of toxic organic compounds naturally occurring in hydrocarbon deposits. This work shows that Rhodococcus aetherivorans BCP1 cells not only utilize a mixture of eight different NAs (8XNAs) for growth but they are also capable of marked degradation of two model NAs, cyclohexanecarboxylic acid (CHCA) and cyclopentanecarboxylic acid (CPCA) when supplied at concentrations from 50 to 500 mgL-1. The growth curves of BCP1 on 8XNAs, CHCA, and CPCA showed an initial lag phase not present in growth on glucose, which presumably was related to the toxic effects of NAs on the cell membrane permeability. BCP1 cell adaptation responses that allowed survival on NAs included changes in cell morphology, production of intracellular bodies and changes in fatty acid composition. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis of BCP1 cells grown on CHCA or CPCA showed a slight reduction in the cell size, the production of EPS-like material and intracellular electron-transparent and electron-dense inclusion bodies. The electron-transparent inclusions increased in the amount and size in NA-grown BCP1 cells under nitrogen limiting conditions and contained storage lipids as suggested by cell staining with the lipophilic Nile Blue A dye. Lipidomic analyses revealed significant changes with increases of methyl-branched (MBFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) examining the fatty acid composition of NAs-growing BCP1 cells. PUFA biosynthesis is not usual in bacteria and, together with MBFA, can influence structural and functional processes with resulting effects on cell vitality. Finally, through the use of RT (Reverse Transcription)-qPCR, a gene cluster (chcpca) was found to be transcriptionally induced during the growth on CHCA and CPCA. Based on the expression and bioinformatics results, the predicted products of the chcpca gene cluster are proposed to be involved in aerobic NA degradation in R. aetherivorans BCP1. This study provides first insights into the genetic and metabolic mechanisms allowing a Rhodococcus strain to aerobically degrade NAs

    Sign-alternating interaction mediated by strongly correlated lattice bosons

    We reveal a generic mechanism of generating sign-alternating intersite interactions mediated by strongly correlated lattice bosons. The ground-state phase diagram of the two-component hard-core Bose–Hubbard model on a square lattice at half-integer filling factor for each component, obtained by worm algorithm Monte Carlo simulations, is strongly modified by these interactions and features the solid+superfluid (SF) phase for strong asymmetry between the hopping amplitudes. The new phase is a direct consequence of the effective nearest-neighbor repulsion between \u27heavy\u27 atoms mediated by the \u27light\u27 SF component. Due to their sign-alternating character, mediated interactions lead to a rich variety of yet to be discovered quantum phases

    El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo contextualizar contenidos curriculares de química: incursionando en el área de bioquímica, como elementos básicos de la formación en química del estudiante; proporcionando información general sobre las propiedades de la vitamina C que permitan al estudiante, como ciudadano, tener libertad de elección frente a la vasta publicidad que se ofrece, entre otros, en los medios masivos de comunicación; aplicando su cultura científica a situaciones de la vida cotidiana y, por lo tanto, valorando la importancia de la educación científica para poder ser capaz de conocer mejor lo que consume y poder opinar en forma crítica sobre ello. Se presentan técnicas sencillas para investigar la presencia de vitamina C en alimentos de uso común. Se discuten distintas estrategias de presentación y tratamiento del tema en los distintos niveles escolares con objetivos diferentes y se analizan cambios en la metodología de trabajo en el aula. Este trabajo fue presentado bajo la modalidad de taller en el XV Congreso Nacional e Internacional de Profesores de Química y los resultados y conclusiones a las que se arribaron fueron ampliamente satisfactorias, ya que permitieron una revalorización de la tarea educativa buscando un currículo más abierto donde el estudiante se sienta partícipe de su proceso de aprendizaje y encuentre contenidos científicos útiles para su vida.This paper attempts to contextualise chemistry curricula contents, entering the field of biochemistry, as basic elements for the formation of chemistry in the student by providing general information on the properties of C vitamin that allows the student, as a citizen, the freedom to choose in front of the huge publicity offered to them, among others, by the mass media. They can apply their scientific culture to everyday life, thus assessing how important scientific education is to be able to better know what is consumed and give a critical opinion. We present simple techniques to find C vitamin in commonly used food. We discuss different strategies to present and deal with this subject at different school levels with different aims, and we analyse the changes in the classroom working methodology. This paper was presented as a workshop in the 15th National and International Congress of Chemistry Professors and its results and conclusion were highly satisfactory, as they allowed revaluing the educational task aiming at a more open curriculum where the student feels part of his learning process and finds scientific contents useful in his everyday life

    Fluid Restriction Dehydration Increase Core Temperature During Endurance Exercise Compared to Exercise Induced Dehydration

This study aimed to evaluate the difference in heart rate and core temperature during aerobic exercise between two forms of dehydration: exercise-induced (EI) and fluid restricted (FR). Twenty-two subjects (N = 22; 83.35 ± 13.92 kg) completed the current study, performing a familiarization session, a pre-experimental exercise session, and two exercise testing sessions. The EI exercise trial (81.52 ± 13.72 kg) was conducted after performing exercise in a hot environment to lose three to four percent of body weight and partial rehydration. The FR exercise trial (81.53 ± 14.14 kg) was completed after 12 hours of fluid restriction. During both exercise sessions, subjects pedaled against a set resistance of 130 watts for 30 minutes. The main effect of hydration on Tc was significant, F(1, 18) = 4.474, p = .049, ηp2 = .199 (Figure 2) with core temperature being greater during the FR trial compared to the EI trial (FR = 37.58 ± .06°C vs. EI = 37.31 ± .11°C). No significant interaction was found between hydration and time for HR, F(2, 42) = 0.120, p = .887, ηp2 = .006. The main effect of time on HR was significant, F(2, 42) = 119.664, p \u3c .001, ηp2 = .851. Fluid restriction was associated with an increase in core temperature. An increased core temperature may negatively influence performance, and care should be taken to ensure proper hydration

    Fingerprint Adversarial Presentation Attack in the Physical Domain

    With the advent of the deep learning era, Fingerprint-based Authentication Systems (FAS) equipped with Fingerprint Presentation Attack Detection (FPAD) modules managed to avoid attacks on the sensor through artificial replicas of fingerprints. Previous works highlighted the vulnerability of FPADs to digital adversarial attacks. However, in a realistic scenario, the attackers may not have the possibility to directly feed a digitally perturbed image to the deep learning based FPAD, since the channel between the sensor and the FPAD is usually protected. In this paper we thus investigate the threat level associated with adversarial attacks against FPADs in the physical domain. By materially realising fakes from the adversarial images we were able to insert them into the system directly from the “exposed” part, the sensor. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first proof-of-concept of a fingerprint adversarial presentation attack. We evaluated how much liveness score changed by feeding the system with the attacks using digital and printed adversarial images. To measure what portion of this increase is due to the printing itself, we also re-printed the original spoof images, without injecting any perturbation. Experiments conducted on the LivDet 2015 dataset demonstrate that the printed adversarial images achieve ∼ 100% attack success rate against an FPAD if the attacker has the ability to make multiple attacks on the sensor (10) and a fairly good result (∼ 28%) in a one-shot scenario. Despite this work must be considered as a proof-of-concept, it constitutes a promising pioneering attempt confirming that an adversarial presentation attack is feasible and dangerous

The General Social Survey can be accessed here: https://gss.norc.org/.We analyze differences in mode of transportation to work by sexual orientation, using the American Community Survey 2008-2019. Working individuals in same-sex couples are significantly less likely to drive to work than working men and women in different-sex couples. This gap is particularly stark among men: on average, almost 12 percentage point (or 13%) lower likelihood of driving to work for men in same-sex couples. Working individuals in same-sex couples are also more likely to use public transport, walk, or bike to work. Men and women are 7 and 3 percentage points more likely, respectively, to take public transportation to work than those in different-sex couples. Working men are also more likely to work from home-while working women are less likely-than those in different-sex couples. These differences persist after controlling for demographic characteristics, partner's characteristics, location, fertility, marital status, occupation or industry, and family income. Additional evidence from the General Social Survey 2008-2018 suggests that these disparities by sexual orientation may be due to lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals valuing the environment more than straight individuals
