    The “Behind the Big House” Project / Jodi Skipper, University of Mississippi and Suzanne DavidsonBehind the Big House is a slave dwelling interpretation program in Holly Springs, Mississippi. The program offers a counter-narrative to the Holly Springs Annual Pilgrimage Tour of Historic Homes and Churches, the city’s main tourist attraction which has historically neglected the contributions of enslaved persons. Behind the Big House was initiated by several private property owners who understood that interpreting the structures which housed enslaved persons could help to remedy such omissions. In addition to discussing how historical memory impacts the functions of these sites in the present, Skipper will discuss her role as a Behind the Big House tour guide, and how she incorporates the tour as an applied component in her courses. Slavery and Its Descendants / W. Ralph Eubanks, University of MississippiThe legacy of slavery and its impact across generations of African Americans is often ignored or overlooked, particularly by institutions that benefited from enslaved labor. The University of Mississippi is no exception. Payment records from the 1840s in the archives of the University of Mississippi indicate that Robert Sheegog—who once owned Faulkner’s home Rowan Oak—along with other local slave owners, loaned slaves to the University. This connection between the slaves of Rowan Oak and the building of the University of Mississippi holds the potential to redefine the idea of legacy connections to the University, since inevitably the descendants of several of those slaves are among the university’s alumni. This paper will discuss the on-going work of the University of Mississippi’s slavery research group and the possible outcomes of planned genealogical research to find the descendants of the slaves from Faulkner’s Rowan Oak who built the university.The University of Mississippi Slavery Research Group / Jeffrey Jackson and Charles K. Ross, University of MississippiIn this presentation, we present the story of the University of Mississippi Slavery Research Group focusing on its origins and the various factors that led to its formation. We highlight some of the groups’ most significant recent efforts to better understand how antebellum slavery shaped the formation of the University of Mississippi and life in North Mississippi generally and we discuss some of our initial projects and initiatives that seek to remember, memorialize and interpret the lives of enslaved people for our students, our local community, and our nation.Interpreting Slavery at Burns Belfry and Rowan Oak / George McDaniel, Burns-Belfry African American History MuseumCaroline Barr was a foundational figure in the life of William Faulkner. As he called her, “Mammy Callie,” she had worked for the Falkner family since he was a young boy. Her house and her story demand a further interpretation beyond the gates of Rowan Oak. Using her as a point of departure, this talk will explore African American history within the larger context of the town of Oxford. It will also look at the ways in which that history is being interpreted today and how that interpretation can be improved through building connections between different historical sites. This connectivity allows for a deeper understanding of African American history in Oxford and the world in which Faulkner lived and wrote

    The implementation research institute: Training mental health implementation researchers in the United States

    Abstract Background The Implementation Research Institute (IRI) provides two years of training in mental health implementation science for 10 new fellows each year. The IRI is supported by a National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) R25 grant and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Fellows attend two annual week-long trainings at Washington University in St. Louis. Training is provided through a rigorous curriculum, local and national mentoring, a ‘learning site visit’ to a federally funded implementation research project, pilot research, and grant writing. Methods This paper describes the rationale, components, outcomes to date, and participant experiences with IRI. Results IRI outcomes include 31 newly trained implementation researchers, their new grant proposals, contributions to other national dissemination and implementation research training, and publications in implementation science authored by the Core Faculty and fellows. Former fellows have obtained independent research funding in implementation science and are beginning to serve as mentors for more junior investigators. Conclusions Based on the number of implementation research grant proposals and papers produced by fellows to date, the IRI is proving successful in preparing new researchers who can inform the process of making evidence-based mental healthcare more available through real-world settings of care and who are advancing the field of implementation science

    Achirality in the low temperature structure and lattice modes of tris(acetylacetonate)iron(iii)

    Tris(acetylacteonate) iron(III) is a relatively ubiquitous mononuclear inorganic coordination complex. The bidentate nature of the three acetylacteonate ligands coordinating around a single centre inevitably leads to structural isomeric forms, however whether or not this relates to chirality in the solid state has been questioned in the literature. Variable temperature neutron diffraction data down to T = 3 K, highlights the dynamic nature of the ligand environment, including the motions of the hydrogen atoms. The Fourier transform of the molecular dynamics simulation based on the experimentally determined structure was shown to closely reproduce the low temperature vibrational density of states obtained using inelastic neutron scattering

    Deposition of mercury in forests across a montane elevation gradient: Elevational and seasonal patterns in methylmercury inputs and production

    Global mercury contamination largely results from direct primary atmospheric and secondary legacy emissions, which can be deposited to ecosystems, converted to methylmercury, and bioaccumulated along food chains. We examined organic horizon soil samples collected across an elevational gradient on Whiteface Mountain in the Adirondack region of New York State, USA to determine spatial patterns in methylmercury concentrations across a forested montane landscape. We found that soil methylmercury concentrations were highest in the midelevation coniferous zone (0.39 ± 0.07 ng/g) compared to the higher elevation alpine zone (0.28 ± 0.04 ng/g) and particularly the lower elevation deciduous zone (0.17 ± 0.02 ng/g), while the percent of total mercury as methylmercury in soils decreased with elevation. We also found a seasonal pattern in soil methylmercury concentrations, with peak methylmercury values occurring in July. Given elevational patterns in temperature and bioavailable total mercury (derived from mineralization of soil organic matter), soil methylmercury concentrations appear to be driven by soil processing of ionic Hg, as opposed to atmospheric deposition of methylmercury. These methylmercury results are consistent with spatial patterns of mercury concentrations in songbird species observed from other studies, suggesting that future declines in mercury emissions could be important for reducing exposure of mercury to montane avian species.Key PointsTotal mercury and methylmercury concentrations and fluxes are examined across an elevational gradient on an Adirondack, New York mountainMethylmercury concentrations across the elevational gradient are greatest in midelevation coniferous zonesSoil methylmercury concentrations are driven by the internal processing of mercury, rather than external inputs of methylmercuryPlain Language SummaryOnce mercury is emitted into the atmosphere by anthropogenic sources, it can be deposited onto the Earth’s surface. This mercury can then be converted to its toxic form of methylmercury by microbes in the soil and can accumulate in birds, altering physiology, behavior, and reproduction. We examined soils from Whiteface Mountain in the Adirondack region of New York State, USA to determine patterns in the production of methylmercury. We found that methylmercury in soils was highest in the mid‐elevation coniferous forests of the mountain and that the concentration appeared to be driven by soil microbes rather than direct deposition of mercury from the atmosphere. The finding of peak methylmercury at mid‐elevations was consistent with previous studies showing peak bird mercury concentrations at the same elevation.     A mixed methods multiple case study of implementation as usual in children’s social service organizations: study protocol

    Background Improving quality in children’s mental health and social service settings will require implementation strategies capable of moving effective treatments and other innovations (e.g., assessment tools) into routine care. It is likely that efforts to identify, develop, and refine implementation strategies will be more successful if they are informed by relevant stakeholders and are responsive to the strengths and limitations of the contexts and implementation processes identified in usual care settings. This study will describe: the types of implementation strategies used; how organizational leaders make decisions about what to implement and how to approach the implementation process; organizational stakeholders’ perceptions of different implementation strategies; and the potential influence of organizational culture and climate on implementation strategy selection, implementation decision-making, and stakeholders’ perceptions of implementation strategies. Methods/design This study is a mixed methods multiple case study of seven children’s social service organizations in one Midwestern city in the United States that compose the control group of a larger randomized controlled trial. Qualitative data will include semi-structured interviews with organizational leaders (e.g., CEOs/directors, clinical directors, program managers) and a review of documents (e.g., implementation and quality improvement plans, program manuals, etc.) that will shed light on implementation decision-making and specific implementation strategies that are used to implement new programs and practices. Additionally, focus groups with clinicians will explore their perceptions of a range of implementation strategies. This qualitative work will inform the development of a Web-based survey that will assess the perceived effectiveness, relative importance, acceptability, feasibility, and appropriateness of implementation strategies from the perspective of both clinicians and organizational leaders. Finally, the Organizational Social Context measure will be used to assess organizational culture and climate. Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods data will be analyzed and interpreted at the case level as well as across cases in order to highlight meaningful similarities, differences, and site-specific experiences. Discussion This study is designed to inform efforts to develop more effective implementation strategies by fully describing the implementation experiences of a sample of community-based organizations that provide mental health services to youth in one Midwestern city

    Long-term woodland restoration on lowland farmland through passive rewilding.

    Natural succession of vegetation on abandoned farmland provides opportunities for passive rewilding to re-establish native woodlands, but in Western Europe the patterns and outcomes of vegetation colonisation are poorly known. We combine time series of field surveys and remote sensing (lidar and photogrammetry) to study woodland development on two farmland fields in England over 24 and 59 years respectively: the New Wilderness (2.1 ha) abandoned in 1996, and the Old Wilderness (3.9 ha) abandoned in 1961, both adjacent to ancient woodland. Woody vegetation colonisation of the New Wilderness was rapid, with 86% vegetation cover averaging 2.9 m tall after 23 years post-abandonment. The Old Wilderness had 100% woody cover averaging 13.1 m tall after 53 years, with an overstorey tree-canopy (≄ 8 m tall) covering 91%. By this stage, the structural characteristics of the Old Wilderness were approaching those of neighbouring ancient woodlands. The woody species composition of both Wildernesses differed from ancient woodland, being dominated by animal-dispersed pedunculate oak Quercus robur and berry-bearing shrubs. Tree colonisation was spatially clustered, with wind-dispersed common ash Fraxinus excelsior mostly occurring near seed sources in adjacent woodland and hedgerows, and clusters of oaks probably resulting from acorn hoarding by birds and rodents. After 24 years the density of live trees in the New Wilderness was 132/ha (57% oak), with 390/ha (52% oak) in the Old Wilderness after 59 years; deadwood accounted for 8% of tree stems in the former and 14% in the latter. Passive rewilding of these 'Wilderness' sites shows that closed-canopy woodland readily re-established on abandoned farmland close to existing woodland, it was resilient to the presence of herbivores and variable weather, and approached the height structure of older woods within approximately 50 years. This study provides valuable long-term reference data in temperate Europe, helping to inform predictions of the potential outcomes of widespread abandonment of agricultural land in this region
