Coupled electric and magnetic dipole formulation for planar arrays of dipolar particles: metasurfaces with various electric and/or magnetic meta-atoms per unit cell

The optical properties of infinite planar array of scattering particles, metasurfaces and metagratings, are attracting special attention lately for their rich phenomenology, including both plasmonic and high-refractive-index dielectric meta-atoms with a variety of electric and magnetic resonant responses. Herein we derive a coupled electric and magnetic dipole (CEMD) analytical formulation to describe the reflection and transmission of such periodic arrays, including specular and diffractive orders, valid in the spectral regimes where only dipolar multipoles are needed. Electric and/or magnetic dipoles with all three orientations arising in turn from a single or various meta-atoms per unit cell are considered. The 2D lattice Green function is rewritten in terms of a 1D (chain) version that fully converges and can be easily calculated. Modes emerging as poles of such lattice Green function can be extracted. This formulation can be applied to investigate a wealth of plasmonic, all-dielectric, and hybrid metasurfaces/metagratings of interest throughout the electromagnetic spectrum.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

Cambios en las formas del comercio y el consumo en Barcelona

This article presents an analysis of the historical evolution of retail forms and infrastructures in the city of Barcelona and of the cosummer patterns of its citizens. First, some antecedents are defined at the very beginnig of xxth Century, looking after to the big transformation of the sixties, the real and late Spanish bourgeois revolution. The next period corresponds to the changes started in 1986, with the integration of Spanish economy into the European Market. An evaluation of the present situation remarks the relevance of the legal constraints and of the relative delay in the development of some modern commercial forms in the City. From the study of some relevants questions on the consumers behaviour a clear conclusion appears relative to the inercia of some local trends in front of the weight of globalization.Este articulo presenta im análisis de la evolución histórica de las formas y equipamientos comerciales de la ciudad de Barcelona y de los hábitos de consumo de sus ciudadanos. Se sientan unos primeros antecedentes a inicios del siglo XX, para detenerse en el impacto de los cambios que se suceden durante los años sesenta, de auténtica revolución burguesa tardía. A continuación se centran los cambios a partir de 1986, fecha clave para iniciar el impacto de la globalización en la economía española. Del análisis de esta evolución se realiza un balance de la situación actual, a partir del marco legal y del retraso relativo en la modernización del equipamiento comercial de Barcelona. Tras plantear algunas cuestiones relevantes acerca del comportamiento de los consumidores barceloneses se concluye una cierta capacidad de resistencia de las formas locales frente a la fuerza del modelo homogeneizante que impone la globalización

Pautas Metodológicas en Hechos 16,25-34 para la Pastoral Familiar de la Parroquia San Juan XXIII

Estos pasos metodológicos se desarrollan en tres capítulos, donde en el primero muestra los referentes contextuales en lo concerniente a las familias y se describen las características de las familias de la comunidad parroquial de San Juan XXIII y la propuesta de la pastoral familiar de la Diócesis de Engativá a la que pertenece la parroquia, pensando en la formación de una pastoral familiar ya que esta parroquia nunca la ha tenido. Dentro de este primer capítulo también se presenta el diseño metodológico de la investigación, con los enfoques cualitativo y cuantitativo, el cual se aplica mediante la técnica de grupo focal, con instrumentos de observación a partir de una encuesta de conocimiento y la historias de vida de los integrantes del grupo focal y el ejercicio de lectura en clave de formación familiar de Hechos 16,25-34, tendiente a la confrontación con el análisis pragmático del mismo con recursos exegéticos. En el segundo capítulo se trazan los referentes teóricos de la investigación, se desarrolla el concepto de familia desde el Magisterio eclesial y el aporte de las disciplinas humanas y sociales. Además, se realiza el estudio exegético-hermenéutico de hechos 16,25-34, con los aportes de la diacronía y sincronía, siguiendo los pasos de la crítica textual, el análisis lingüístico-sintáctico, la semántica de la palabra y la pragmática, para así finalmente darle un enfoque al texto bíblico y su aplicación como resultado de esta investigación

A characterisation and evaluation of urban areas from an energy efficiency approach, using Geographic Information Systems in combination with Life Cycle Assessment methodology

The retrofitting of less energy efficient building stock represents one of the most significant challenges in the transition to a low-carbon economy. Nowadays, the housing sector represents about 40% of the energy consumption in the European Union. In this regard, the level of insulation installed in buildings is directly related to the energy efficiency of the building, and consequently to the urban area. In addition, several studies have shown that a comprehensive perspective of energy efficiency is needed, together with calculating the importance of introducing Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. The purpose of this study is to develop a methodology to: first, measure the energy efficiency level of specific urban areas and their buildings using a geospatial model in an integral perspective; and second, the environmental impact caused by the refurbishment of these building façades using a LCA method. On the one hand, according to a bottom-up framework the quantitative and qualitative characterisation of the building stock façade at the urban scale is possible generating a georeferenced spatial data model of buildings using Geographic Information Systems. On the other hand, the environmental impact of the most usual constructive solutions to refurbishment building façades is calculated using the LCA methodology. The results obtained are merged and interpolated to the urban scale. The methodology is tested for the case study of blocks of flats in Barcelona using the open data of building stock from the Spanish Government. Firstly, this methodology provides more information in regard to urban areas as well as calculating their energy efficiency. Secondly, the study measures the renovation impact of the less efficient buildings. Finally, the results provide the basis for supporting decisions on building stock retrofitting for urban scale from a new approach, especially making the selection between various renovation scenarios much clearer

Ethanol-Induced Oxidative Stress Modifies Inflammation and Angiogenesis Biomarkers in Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells (ARPE-19): Role of CYP2E1 and its Inhibition by Antioxidants

The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) plays a key role in retinal health, being essential for the protection against reactive oxygen species (ROS). Nevertheless, excessive oxidative stress can induce RPE dysfunction, promoting visual loss. Our aim is to clarify the possible implication of CYP2E1 in ethanol (EtOH)-induced oxidative stress in RPE alterations. Despite the increase in the levels of ROS, measured by fluorescence probes, the RPE cells exposed to the lowest EtOH concentrations were able to maintain cell survival, measured by the Cell Proliferation Kit II (XTT). However, EtOH-induced oxidative stress modified inflammation and angiogenesis biomarkers, analyzed by proteome array, ELISA, qPCR and Western blot. The highest EtOH concentration used stimulated a large increase in ROS levels, upregulating the cytochrome P450-2E1 (CYP2E1) and promoting cell death. The use of antioxidants such as N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and diallyl sulfide (DAS), which is also a CYP2E1 inhibitor, reverted cell death and oxidative stress, modulating also the upstream angiogenesis and inflammation regulators. Because oxidative stress plays a central role in most frequent ocular diseases, the results herein support the proposal that CYP2E1 upregulation could aggravate retinal degeneration, especially in those patients with high baseline oxidative stress levels due to their ocular pathology and should be considered as a risk factor.LVG was recipient of a pre-doctoral fellowship (EDUCV-PRE-2015-006).
