    Combustion of Soya Oil and Diesel Oil Mixtures for Use in Thermal Energy Production

    Producción CientíficaIn August 2005, Spain approved the Plan for Renewable Energy Sources for the period 2005-2010 (P.E.R.), including co-combustion installations. Co-combustion in the P.E.R. aims to increase power output by 12,185.3 GWh in five years and shows great interest in studies of the combustion of mixtures of fossil and bio-combustible fuels. This paper presents studies of the co-combustion of soya oil and diesel for thermal heating. The paper begins with a characterization of soya oil as well as mixtures of this oil, with diesel, as fuels. The combustion of the soya oil mixtures and diesel is made in an installation, where the pressure of injection as well as the air volume of the burner can be changed. The obtained results inside to be the environmental average legislation and a greater efficiency of combustion is found. The conclusions show that the use of mixtures of soya oil and Diesel for producing thermal energy in conventional equipment is feasible

    A note on the combustion of blends of diesel and soya, sunflower and rapeseed vegetable oils in a light boiler

    Producción CientíficaThis paper deals with the study of the vegetable oils (VO) used as fuel for heating. The properties of sunflower, rape and soya oils are studied and these are compared with the properties of C-diesel fuel (used for heating domestic purposes in Spain). The mixtures of VO and diesel are studied and characterized and, finally, the results of a series of combustion trials of the mixtures in a conventional heating installation with a mechanical pulverization burner are presented. The results show that viscosity of VO limits the use of blends up to 40% of them, and the oxygen present in their structures contributes to an efficiency gai

    A novel deep learning based hippocampus subfield segmentation method

    [EN] The automatic assessment of hippocampus volume is an important tool in the study of several neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Specifically, the measurement of hippocampus subfields properties is of great interest since it can show earlier pathological changes in the brain. However, segmentation of these subfields is very difficult due to their complex structure and for the need of high-resolution magnetic resonance images manually labeled. In this work, we present a novel pipeline for automatic hippocampus subfield segmentation based on a deeply supervised convolutional neural network. Results of the proposed method are shown for two available hippocampus subfield delineation protocols. The method has been compared to other state-of-the-art methods showing improved results in terms of accuracy and execution time.This research was supported by the Spanish DPI2017-87743-R grant from the Ministerio de Economia, Industria y Competitividad of Spain.     A contribution to the study of plant development evolution based on gene co-expression networks

    Phototrophic eukaryotes are among the most successful organisms on Earth due to their unparalleled efficiency at capturing light energy and fixing carbon dioxide to produce organic molecules. A conserved and efficient network of light-dependent regulatory modules could be at the bases of this success. This regulatory system conferred early advantages to phototrophic eukaryotes that allowed for specialization, complex developmental processes and modern plant characteristics. We have studied light-dependent gene regulatory modules from algae to plants employing integrative-omics approaches based on gene co-expression networks. Our study reveals some remarkably conserved ways in which eukaryotic phototrophs deal with day length and light signaling. Here we describe how a family of Arabidopsis transcription factors involved in photoperiod response has evolved from a single algal gene according to the innovation, amplification and divergence theory of gene evolution by duplication.     Ditch 1 from Perdigões within the traditions of Late Prehistoric monumental architecture in the middle Guadiana basin (4th-3rd millennia cal BC)

    Traditional approaches to the Late Prehistory in the middle Guadiana basin (south-western Iberia), have subsumed a variety of site types under a unifying category labelled ‘settlement site’. That included ‘walled enclosures’, ‘ditched enclosures’ and ‘pit sites’. However, they are very different in their form and features, the formation of archaeological deposits and their chronology. This suggests that more fine-tuned analyses, in which the emergence and evolution of every type of site is studied on its own, could be fruitful. In the present paper, ditch 1 from Perdigões (Reguengos de Monsaraz, Portugal) will be put in the wider context of the process of monumentalisation of the middle Guadiana landscapes in the 4th and 3rd millennia cal bc. From the perspective outlined above, we shall make a first attempt to set forth the genealogy of walled enclosures, pit sites and ditched enclosures in the region.Las lecturas históricas tradicionales sobre la Prehistoria Reciente realizadas en la cuenca media del Guadiana (so de Iberia) han unificado bajo un mismo concepto de ‘poblado’ o ‘asentamiento’ yacimientos muy distintos en su morfología, en la formación del registro arqueológico o en su cronología. Bajo ese etiquetado se han incluido tanto los yacimientos de hoyos como los recintos de fosos y/o los recintos murados/ fortificados. Sin embargo, todos ellos son muy diferentes en su forma y características, la formación de depósitos arqueológicos y su cronología. Esto sugiere que un análisis más preciso, en el que la aparición y la evolución de cada tipo de sitio se estudie por sí solo, podría ser fructífero. En el presente artículo se sitúa el Foso 1 de Perdigões (Reguengos de Monsaraz, Portugal) en el contexto más amplio del proceso de monumentalización de los paisajes del Medio Guadiana durante el iv y el iii milenio cal ac.     Performance evaluation for 68Ga and 18F of the ARGUS small-animal PET scanner based on the NEMA NU-4 standard

One disadvantage of 68Ga versus 18F is its larger positron range, which deteriorates the effective spatial resolution and the overall image quality. In this work we present a performance evaluation of the ARGUS smallanimal positron emission tomography (PET) scanner for two positron emitters, 68Ga and 18F. These experiments followed the procedure based on the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) NU 4-2008 standard. We show how the use of 68Ga may affect the NEMA performance of the system in terms of image quality and spatial resolution. The recovery coefficients (RC) measured in the image-quality phantom ranged from 0.17 to 0.72 for 68Ga and from 0.28 to 0.92 for 18F, using iterative image reconstruction methods and applying all corrections. Under the same conditions the image noise (%STD) in a uniform region was 17.0% for 68Ga and 15.1% for 18F. The respective spillover ratios (SOR) were 0.13 and 0.09 in air, and 0.21 and 0.12 in water. Attenuation correction yielded an improvement of the SOR close to 50% for both radionuclides in the air-filled region. This work evaluates the image reconstruction methods and corrections available in the ARGUS PET for 68Ga and 18F to assess the influence of their physical properties on the NEMA parameters.Publicad

    Peso al nacimiento en ecosistemas de altura. Noroeste argentino: Susques

    Human populations living in high altitude ecosystems have had to adapt to the environmental stress that characterized these mediums. One of these adaptations seems to be birth weight reduction. In this paper, 300 births, registered between 1996 and 2002 in the andean department of Susques (3.600 m), northwest of the Republic of Argentine are analyzed. Their weight, sex, mother age and parity are known. Results show that birth weight is smaller in Susques than in zones of lower altitude of the same county. Very low weight newborns percentage is very small as founded in the rest of the county. On the contrary, low weight babies in the studied population shows higher frecuencies than those of the regions situated in altitudes lower than 2.500 m.s.n.m. The birth weight increase with the parity and the mother's age and it presents a significant sexual dimorphism. But these variables don’t explain, by themselves, the observed newborns ponderal variation, that should change because of other tipical factors of the estudied environment influence.Las condiciones ambientales que caracterizan los ecosistemas de altura suponen un entorno estresante al que biológicamente han debido adaptarse las poblaciones que habitan en ellos. Una de estas adaptaciones parece ser la reducción del peso al nacer. En el presente trabajo se analizan 300 nacimientos, registrados entre 1996 y 2002 en la localidad andina de Susques (3.600 m.s.n.m.), en el noroeste de la República Argentina, de los que se conoce: peso y sexo del neonato, paridad y edad de la madre. Los resultados muestran que el peso al nacimiento es menor en Susques que en zonas de menor altitud de la misma provincia. El porcentaje de recién nacidos con muy bajo peso encontrado en la población estudiada es muy pequeño al igual que en el resto de Jujuy, a diferencia del bajo peso que muestra frecuencias superiores en relación a las regiones ubicadas en altitudes inferiores a los 2.500 m.s.n.m. El peso al nacer presenta un dimorfismo sexual significativo y se ve incrementada con la paridad y edad de la madre. Sin embargo, estas variables por sí solas no explican la variación ponderal observada en los neonatos la cual, por tanto, debe responder a otros factores propios del medio estudiado

    Effects of saline reclaimed waters and deficit irrigation on Citrus physiology assessed by UAV remote sensing

    The aim of our research was to discover the effects of the long-term irrigation with saline reclaimed (RW) and transfer (TW) water and different irrigation strategies: control (C) and regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) on yield and fruit quality of grapefruit at harvest and during cold storage. TW-RDI treatment decreased tree canopy (TC) and crop load, resulting in a 21% reduction of fruit yield. Regarding fruit quality, RW notably decreased peel thickness at harvest (about 8%); however, this difference was not remained during cold storage. Sugar/acid ratio was mainly increased by RDI, but also by RW, due to an important increase in soluble solid content (11% of average value for TW-RDI, RW-C and RW-RDI). In addition, RDI combined with RW, significantly increased the number of fruits in small category 5 at the end of cold storage.     Correlations between Elastic, Calorimetric, and Polar Properties of Ferroelectric PbSc0.5Ta0.5O3 (PST)

    Calorimetric, elastic, and polar properties of ferrolectric lead scandium tantalate PbSc0.5Ta0.5O3 (PST) with 65% cation order have been investigated in the vicinity of the paraelectric-ferroelectric transition at Ttrans = 295K. Comparison of temperature dependencies of the excess specific heat and elastic properties indicate that both anomalies stem from ther- mal fluctuations of order parameters in three dimensions. These fluctuations are consistent with tweed microstructure. This transition is driven by several coupled thermodynamic order parameters, as evidenced by a strongly non-linear scaling of the excess entropy with the squared ferroelectric polarization.National Natural Science Foundation of China (51850410520, 51320105014 and 51621063
