Accurate depth control provided for thermocouple junction locations
Flight reentry experiments define the total heating on a large blunt-nosed body by means of imbedded thermocouples. The thermocouples, installed in a beryllium layered forebody, were designed to provide minimum feasible disturbance of local heat flow with accurate depth control of the thermocouple junction locations

What's the difference between medical and nursing care? The answer is not straightforward, but shortages in the medical workforce mean that nurses are increasingly called on to undertake work that was previously done by doctors (such as undertaking surgery,1 prescribing drugs, performing triage in emergency departments), whereas shortages in the nursing workforce mean that healthcare assistants now do many tasks that nurses are trained to do. This fluidity in professional roles and competencies enables the health workforce to respond to need, but are outcomes for patients being improved? Do these benefits come at an additional cost, and if so, are they worth paying for
Integrating multiple representations: fighting asthma
This paper seeks to engage debates about integrating pluralisms regarding multiple forms/representations and how they might function smoothly if they are closely aligned. This paper offers, narrative poetry with an artistic impression aimed at seeing how these might interact with each other. Like poetry, visual images are unique and can evoke particular kinds of emotional and visceral responses. By offering narrative poetry together with an artistic representation it is not meant to de-value the importance of either, but it is aimed at seeing how these arts-based methods and creative analytical practices might unite as a narrative to offer knew ways of ‘knowing’ and ‘seeing
The Focal Account: Indirect Lie Detection Need Not Access Unconscious, Implicit Knowledge
People are poor lie detectors, but accuracy can be improved by making the judgment indirectly. In a typical demonstration, participants are not told that the experiment is about deception at all. Instead, they judge whether the speaker appears, say, tense or not. Surprisingly, these indirect judgments better reflect the speaker’s veracity. A common explanation is that participants have an implicit awareness of deceptive behavior, even when they cannot explicitly identify it. We propose an alternative explanation. Attending to a range of behaviors, as explicit raters do, can lead to conflict: A speaker may be thinking hard (indicating deception) but not tense (indicating honesty). In 2 experiments, we show that the judgment (and in turn the correct classification rate) is the result of attending to a single behavior, as indirect raters are instructed to do. Indirect lie detection does not access implicit knowledge, but simply focuses the perceiver on more useful cues

Are you hiding something from me? Uncertainty and judgments about the intentions of others
We are skilled at reading other’s intentions – until they try to hide them. We are biased towards taking at face value what others say, but it is not clear why. One possibility is that we are uncertain, and make the decision by relying on heuristics. Half of our participants judged whether speakers were lying or telling the truth. The other half did not have to commit to a judgment: they were allowed to say they were unsure. We expected these participants would no longer need to rely on simplified heuristics and so show a reduced bias compared to the forced choice condition. Surprisingly, those who could say they were unsure were more biased towards believing people. We consider two possible accounts, both highlighting the importance of examining raters’ uncertainty, which have so far been undocumented. Allowing raters to abstain from judgment gives new insights into the judgment-forming process
A fast and robust numerical scheme for solving models of charge carrier transport and ion vacancy motion in perovskite solar cells
Drift-diffusion models that account for the motion of both electronic and
ionic charges are important tools for explaining the hysteretic behaviour and
guiding the development of metal halide perovskite solar cells. Furnishing
numerical solutions to such models for realistic operating conditions is
challenging owing to the extreme values of some of the parameters. In
particular, those characterising (i) the short Debye lengths (giving rise to
rapid changes in the solutions across narrow layers), (ii) the relatively large
potential differences across devices and (iii) the disparity in timescales
between the motion of the electronic and ionic species give rise to significant
stiffness. We present a finite difference scheme with an adaptive time step
that is posed on a non-uniform staggered grid that provides second order
accuracy in the mesh spacing. The method is able to cope with the stiffness of
the system for realistic parameters values whilst providing high accuracy and
maintaining modest computational costs. For example, a transient sweep of a
current-voltage curve can be computed in only a few minutes on a standard

Subventricular zone stem cells are heterogeneous with respect to their embryonic origins and neurogenic fates in the adult olfactory bulb
Wedetermined the embryonic origins of adult forebrain subventricular zone (SVZ) stem cells by Cre-lox fate mapping in transgenic mice. We found that all parts of the telencephalic neuroepithelium, including the medial ganglionic eminence and lateral ganglionic eminence (LGE) and the cerebral cortex, contribute multipotent, self-renewing stem cells to the adult SVZ. Descendants of the embryonic LGE and cortex settle in ventral and dorsal aspects of the dorsolateral SVZ, respectively. Both populations contribute new (5-bromo-2(')-deoxyuridine- labeled) tyrosine hydroxylase- and calretinin-positive interneurons to the adult olfactory bulb. However, calbindin-positive interneurons in the olfactory glomeruli were generated exclusively by LGE- derived stem cells. Thus, different SVZ stem cells have different embryonic origins, colonize different parts of the SVZ, and generate different neuronal progeny, suggesting that some aspects of embryonic patterning are preserved in the adult SVZ. This could have important implications for the design of endogenous stem cell-based therapies in the future

High-speed multi-dimensional relative navigation for uncooperative space objects
This work proposes a high-speed Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) based navigation architecture that is appropriate for uncooperative relative space navigation applications. In contrast to current solutions that exploit 3D LIDAR data, our architecture transforms the odometry problem from the 3D space into multiple 2.5D ones and completes the odometry problem by utilizing a recursive filtering scheme. Trials evaluate several current state-of-the-art 2D keypoint detection and local feature description methods as well as recursive filtering techniques on a number of simulated but credible scenarios that involve a satellite model developed by Thales Alenia Space (France). Most appealing performance is attained by the 2D keypoint detector Good Features to Track (GFFT) combined with the feature descriptor KAZE, that are further combined with either the H∞ or the Kalman recursive filter. Experimental results demonstrate that compared to current algorithms, the GFTT/KAZE combination is highly appealing affording one order of magnitude more accurate odometry and a very low processing burden, which depending on the competitor method, may exceed one order of magnitude faster computation
