NASA's Software Safety Standard
NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) relies more and more on software to control, monitor, and verify its safety critical systems, facilities and operations. Since the 1960's there has hardly been a spacecraft (manned or unmanned) launched that did not have a computer on board that provided vital command and control services. Despite this growing dependence on software control and monitoring, there has been no consistent application of software safety practices and methodology to NASA's projects with safety critical software. Led by the NASA Headquarters Office of Safety and Mission Assurance, the NASA Software Safety Standard (STD-18l9.13B) has recently undergone a significant update in an attempt to provide that consistency. This paper will discuss the key features of the new NASA Software Safety Standard. It will start with a brief history of the use and development of software in safety critical applications at NASA. It will then give a brief overview of the NASA Software Working Group and the approach it took to revise the software engineering process across the Agency

Pretreatment of mixed softwoods with SO2 impregnation and steam for production of ethanol has been investigated. The optimal conditions, both for sugar yield and ethanol yield, to assess the effect of inhibitors formed in the pretreatment, have been determined. The parameters investigated were: SO2 concentration (1-6% (w/w) dry matter), temperature (190-230 degrees C) and residence time (2-15 min). After pretreatment, the material was separated into a solid residue and a filtrate. The solid residue was enzymatically hydrolysed with 2% dry matter (w/w). To investigate fermentability, the hydrolysed filtrate was fermented using Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The effects of the different parameters are described by response-surface modelling. The highest experimental sugar yield of 42.1 g per 100 g dry matter was obtained at 210 degrees C and 5.5 min residence time. Although the fermentabilities were good for all filtrates with yields greater than 90% of the yield obtained in a pure glucose reference solution, the pretreatment has a clear influence on the ethanol production rate. Ultraviolet Emission Line Ratios of Cataclysmic Variables
We present a statistical analysis of the ultraviolet emission lines of
cataclysmic variables (CVs) based on ultraviolet spectra of 20
sources extracted from the International Ultraviolet Explorer Uniform Low
Dispersion Archive. These spectra are used to measure the emission line fluxes
of N V, Si IV, C IV, and He II and to construct diagnostic flux ratio diagrams.
We investigate the flux ratio parameter space populated by individual CVs and
by various CV subclasses (e.g., AM Her stars, DQ Her stars, dwarf novae,
nova-like variables). For most systems, these ratios are clustered within a
range of decade for log Si IV/C IV and log He II/C IV
and decades for log N V/C IV . These
ratios are compared to photoionization and collisional ionization models to
constrain the excitation mechanism and the physical conditions of the
line-emitting gas. We find that the collisional models do the poorest job of
reproducing the data. The photoionization models reproduce the Si IV/C IV line
ratios for some shapes of the ionizing spectrum, but the predicted N V/C IV
line ratios are simultaneously too low by typically decades. Worse,
for no parameters are any of the models able to reproduce the observed He II/C
IV line ratios; this ratio is far too small in the collisional and scattering
models and too large by typically decades in the photoionization

Exposure to environmental stressors result in increased viral load and further reduction of production parameters in pigs experimentally infected with PCV2b
Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) has been identified as the essential, but not sole, underlying infectious component for PCV-associated diseases (PCVAD). Several co-factors have been suggested to convert an infection with PCV2 into the clinical signs of PCVAD, including co-infection with a secondary pathogen and the genetic background of the pig. In the present study, we investigated the role of environmental stressors in the form of changes in environmental temperature and increased stocking-density on viral load in serum and tissue, average daily weight gain (ADG) and food conversion rate (FCR) of pigs experimentally infected with a defined PCV2b strain over an eight week period. These stressors were identified recently as risk factors leading to the occurrence of severe PCVAD on a farm level. In the current study, PCV2-free pigs were housed in separate, environmentally controlled rooms, and the experiment was performed in a 2 × 2 factorial design. In general, PCV2b infection reduced ADG and increased FCR, and these were further impacted on by the environmental stressors. Furthermore, all stressors led to an increased viral load in serum and tissue as assessed by qPCR, although levels did not reach statistical significance. Our data suggest that there is no need for an additional pathogen to develop PCVAD in conventional status pigs, and growth retardation and clinical signs can be induced in PCV2 infected pigs that are exposed to environmental stressors alone
Precision Electron-Beam Polarimetry using Compton Scattering at 1 GeV
We report on the highest precision yet achieved in the measurement of the
polarization of a low energy, (1 GeV), electron beam, accomplished
using a new polarimeter based on electron-photon scattering, in Hall~C at
Jefferson Lab. A number of technical innovations were necessary, including a
novel method for precise control of the laser polarization in a cavity and a
novel diamond micro-strip detector which was able to capture most of the
spectrum of scattered electrons. The data analysis technique exploited track
finding, the high granularity of the detector and its large acceptance. The
polarization of the A, ~GeV electron beam was measured with a
statistical precision of ~1\% per hour and a systematic uncertainty of
0.59\%. This exceeds the level of precision required by the \qweak experiment,
a measurement of the vector weak charge of the proton. Proposed future
low-energy experiments require polarization uncertainty ~0.4\%, and this
result represents an important demonstration of that possibility. This
measurement is also the first use of diamond detectors for particle tracking in

Two Rare Magnetic Cataclysmic Variables with Extreme Cyclotron Features Identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
Two newly identified magnetic cataclysmic variables discovered in the Sloan
Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), SDSSJ155331.12+551614.5 and SDSSJ132411.57+032050.5,
have spectra showing highly prominent, narrow, strongly polarized cyclotron
humps with amplitudes that vary on orbital periods of 4.39 and 2.6 hrs,
respectively. In the former, the spacing of the humps indicates the 3rd and 4th
harmonics in a magnetic field of ~60 MG. The narrowness of the cyclotron
features and the lack of strong emission lines imply very low temperature
plasmas and very low accretion rates, so that the accreting area is heated by
particle collisions rather than accretion shocks. The detection of rare systems
like these exemplifies the ability of the SDSS to find the lowest accretion

Impact of centralising acute stroke services in English metropolitan areas on mortality and length of hospital stay: difference-in-differences analysis
Objective: To investigate whether centralisation of acute stroke services in two metropolitan areas of England was associated with changes in mortality and length of hospital stay. Design: Analysis of difference-in-differences between regions with patient level data from the hospital episode statistics database linked to mortality data supplied by the Office for National Statistics. Setting: Acute stroke services in Greater Manchester and London, England. Participants: 258 915 patients with stroke living in urban areas and admitted to hospital in January 2008 to March 2012. Interventions “Hub and spoke” model for acute stroke care. In London hyperacute care was provided to all patients with stroke. In Greater Manchester hyperacute care was provided to patients presenting within four hours of developing symptoms of stroke. Main outcome measures Mortality from any cause and at any place at 3, 30, and 90 days after hospital admission; length of hospital stay. Results: In London there was a significant decline in risk adjusted mortality at 3, 30, and 90 days after admission. At 90 days the absolute reduction was −1.1% (95% confidence interval −2.1 to −0.1; relative reduction 5%), indicating 168 fewer deaths (95% confidence interval 19 to 316) during the 21 month period after reconfiguration in London. In both areas there was a significant decline in risk adjusted length of hospital stay: −2.0 days in Greater Manchester (95% confidence interval −2.8 to −1.2; 9%) and −1.4 days in London (−2.3 to −0.5; 7%). Reductions in mortality and length of hospital stay were largely seen among patients with ischaemic stroke. Conclusions: A centralised model of acute stroke care, in which hyperacute care is provided to all patients with stroke across an entire metropolitan area, can reduce mortality and length of hospital stay

Association of Genetic Variants With Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma Among Individuals With African Ancestry.
Importance:Primary open-angle glaucoma presents with increased prevalence and a higher degree of clinical severity in populations of African ancestry compared with European or Asian ancestry. Despite this, individuals of African ancestry remain understudied in genomic research for blinding disorders. Objectives:To perform a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of African ancestry populations and evaluate potential mechanisms of pathogenesis for loci associated with primary open-angle glaucoma. Design, Settings, and Participants:A 2-stage GWAS with a discovery data set of 2320 individuals with primary open-angle glaucoma and 2121 control individuals without primary open-angle glaucoma. The validation stage included an additional 6937 affected individuals and 14 917 unaffected individuals using multicenter clinic- and population-based participant recruitment approaches. Study participants were recruited from Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, the United States, Tanzania, Britain, Cameroon, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Morocco, Peru, and Mali from 2003 to 2018. Individuals with primary open-angle glaucoma had open iridocorneal angles and displayed glaucomatous optic neuropathy with visual field defects. Elevated intraocular pressure was not included in the case definition. Control individuals had no elevated intraocular pressure and no signs of glaucoma. Exposures:Genetic variants associated with primary open-angle glaucoma. Main Outcomes and Measures:Presence of primary open-angle glaucoma. Genome-wide significance was defined as P < 5 × 10-8 in the discovery stage and in the meta-analysis of combined discovery and validation data. Results:A total of 2320 individuals with primary open-angle glaucoma (mean [interquartile range] age, 64.6 [56-74] years; 1055 [45.5%] women) and 2121 individuals without primary open-angle glaucoma (mean [interquartile range] age, 63.4 [55-71] years; 1025 [48.3%] women) were included in the discovery GWAS. The GWAS discovery meta-analysis demonstrated association of variants at amyloid-β A4 precursor protein-binding family B member 2 (APBB2; chromosome 4, rs59892895T>C) with primary open-angle glaucoma (odds ratio [OR], 1.32 [95% CI, 1.20-1.46]; P = 2 × 10-8). The association was validated in an analysis of an additional 6937 affected individuals and 14 917 unaffected individuals (OR, 1.15 [95% CI, 1.09-1.21]; P < .001). Each copy of the rs59892895*C risk allele was associated with increased risk of primary open-angle glaucoma when all data were included in a meta-analysis (OR, 1.19 [95% CI, 1.14-1.25]; P = 4 × 10-13). The rs59892895*C risk allele was present at appreciable frequency only in African ancestry populations. In contrast, the rs59892895*C risk allele had a frequency of less than 0.1% in individuals of European or Asian ancestry. Conclusions and Relevance:In this genome-wide association study, variants at the APBB2 locus demonstrated differential association with primary open-angle glaucoma by ancestry. If validated in additional populations this finding may have implications for risk assessment and therapeutic strategies
Detector Systems Engineering for Extremely Large Instruments
The scientific detector systems for the ESO ELT first-light instruments,
HARMONI, MICADO, and METIS, together will require 27 science detectors:
seventeen 2.5 m cutoff H4RG-15 detectors, four 4K x 4K 231-84 CCDs, five
5.3 m cutoff H2RG detectors, and one 13.5 m cutoff GEOSNAP detector.
This challenging program of scientific detector system development covers
everything from designing and producing state-of-the-art detector control and
readout electronics, to developing new detector characterization techniques in
the lab, to performance modeling and final system verification. We report
briefly on the current design of these detector systems and developments
underway to meet the challenging scientific performance goals of the ELT
