Post-zygotic reproductive isolation among populations of Iris atropurpurea: The effect of spatial distance among crosses and the role of inbreeding and outbreeding depression in determining niche width

Question: What is the role of inbreeding and outbreeding depression in creating spatial patterns of reproductive isolation among populations within a species? Hypothesis: A combination of inbreeding and outbreeding effects create an optimal crossing distance at which reproductive isolation is minimal. Organism: 'Iris atropurpurea' Dinsm., an endangered and endemic Israeli plant, with a fragmented distriution throughout the coastal plain. Field sites: Two 'I. atropurpurea' populations, one in the Shafdan dunes, and one in the Netanya Iris Reserve, both ca. 19 km S or N (respectively) of Tel Aviv, on the coastal plain in Israel. Methods: We performed artificial cross-pollination within and between populations of 'I. atropurpurea' at various distances and measured seed germination and seedling survivorship. Results: Theoretical considerations led us to expect that inbreeding depression acts mostly at the small scale, and that higher offspring fitness is revealed at distances < 10 km. Results from the experiment showed that reproductive isolation acts differently in consequent stages of the hybrid life history. Pattern of total reproductive isolation among populations along a geographical axis showed different patterns in the two natural populations: while in the Netanya population no pattern appeared, in Shafdan we found a pattern of intermediate distance where reproductive isolation is the highest, and in short and long distances reproductive isolation relaxed

Snowflake groups, Perron-Frobenius eigenvalues, and isoperimetric spectra

The k-dimensional Dehn (or isoperimetric) function of a group bounds the volume of efficient ball-fillings of k-spheres mapped into k-connected spaces on which the group acts properly and cocompactly; the bound is given as a function of the volume of the sphere. We advance significantly the observed range of behavior for such functions. First, to each non-negative integer matrix P and positive rational number r, we associate a finite, aspherical 2-complex X_{r,P} and calculate the Dehn function of its fundamental group G_{r,P} in terms of r and the Perron-Frobenius eigenvalue of P. The range of functions obtained includes x^s, where s is an arbitrary rational number greater than or equal to 2. By repeatedly forming multiple HNN extensions of the groups G_{r,P} we exhibit a similar range of behavior among higher-dimensional Dehn functions, proving in particular that for each positive integer k and rational s greater than or equal to (k+1)/k there exists a group with k-dimensional Dehn function x^s. Similar isoperimetric inequalities are obtained for arbitrary manifold pairs (M,\partial M) in addition to (B^{k+1},S^k).Comment: 42 pages, 8 figures. The Analysis of the Difficulty in Learning Economics Subject Experienced By Students of Favored State Senior High Schools in City of Malang

Education need to have the ability to improve students’ potentials, namely religion spiritual power, self-management, personality, intelligence, virtuous morals, as well as skills needed by learners and society. Teachers carry an important role to resolve problems related to learning difficulties. The result of the research that was done through interview shows that the types of learning difficulties found in students of favored state senior high schools in the City of Malang are the lack of understanding in receiving information and concept understanding problem. Hence, the solution suggested to solve the problems are: collecting materials taken from compulsory economics textbook and electronic books; asking the teacher regarding the materials that are not yet fully understood; increasing the frequency of exercises in LKS (School’s Exercise Book), or other sources; making summaries, schemes, and notes to ease the comprehension of economics materials’ basic concept; and scheduling studying time outside the school, and at home as well as providing more studying media at home. Keywords: Learning difficulty, economics subject, learning outcom

Covariation Among Vowel Height Effects on Acoustic Measures

Covariation among vowel height effects on vowel intrinsic fundamental frequency (IF0), voice onset time (VOT), and voiceless interval duration (VID) is analyzed to assess the plausibility of a common physiological mechanism underlying variation in these measures. Phrases spoken by 20 young adults, containing words composed of initial voiceless stops or /s/ and high or low vowels, were produced in habitual and voluntarily increased F0 conditions. High vowels were associated with increased IF0 and longer VIDs. VOT and VID exhibited significant covariation with IF0 only for males at habitua

Mass seasonal bioflows of high-flying insect migrants

Migrating animals have an impact on ecosystems directly via influxes of predators, prey, and competitors and indirectly by vectoring nutrients, energy, and pathogens. Although linkages between vertebrate movements and ecosystem processes have been established, the effects of mass insect "bioflows" have not been described. We quantified biomass flux over the southern United Kingdom for high-flying (>150 meters) insects and show that ~3.5 trillion insects (3200 tons of biomass) migrate above the region annually. These flows are not randomly directed in insects larger than 10 milligrams, which exploit seasonally beneficial tailwinds. Large seasonal differences in the southward versus northward transfer of biomass occur in some years, although flows were balanced over the 10 year period. Our long-term study reveals a major transport process with implications for ecosystem services, processes, and biogeochemistry

Casting Light Upon The Great Endarkenment

Get PDF
While the Enlightenment promoted thinking for oneself independent of religious authority, the ‘Endarkenment’ (Millgram 2015) concerns deference to a new authority: the specialist, a hyperspecializer. Non-specialists need to defer to such authorities as they are unable to understand their reasoning. Millgram describes how humans are capable of being serial hyperspecializers, able to move from one specialism to another. We support the basic thrust of Millgram’s position, and seek to articulate how the core idea is deployed in very different ways in relation to extremely different philosophical areas. We attend to the issue of the degree of isolation of different specialists and we urge greater emphasis on parallel hyperspecialization, which describes how different specialisms can be embodied in one person at one time

High-throughput sequencing defines donor and recipient HLA B-cell epitope frequencies for prospective matching in transplantation

Get PDF
Compatibility for human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes between transplant donors and recipients improves graft survival but prospective matching is rarely performed due to the vast heterogeneity of this gene complex. To reduce complexity, we have combined next-generation sequencing and in silico mapping to determine transplant population frequencies and matching probabilities of 150 antibody-binding eplets across all 11 classical HLA genes in 2000 ethnically heterogeneous renal patients and donors. We show that eplets are more common and uniformly distributed between donors and recipients than the respective HLA isoforms. Simulations of targeted eplet matching shows that a high degree of overall compatibility, and perfect identity at the clinically important HLA class II loci, can be obtained within a patient waiting list of approximately 250 subjects. Internal epitope-based allocation is thus feasible for most major renal transplant programs, while regional or national sharing may be required for other solid organs
