Chimpanzees demonstrate individual differences in social information use
Studies of transmission biases in social learning have greatly informed our understanding of how behaviour patterns may diffuse through animal populations, yet within-species inter-individual variation in social information use has received little attention and remains poorly understood. We have addressed this question by examining individual performances across multiple experiments with the same population of primates. We compiled a dataset spanning 16 social learning studies (26 experimental conditions) carried out at the same study site over a 12-year period, incorporating a total of 167 chimpanzees. We applied a binary scoring system to code each participant’s performance in each study according to whether they demonstrated evidence of using social information from conspecifics to solve the experimental task or not (Social Information Score—‘SIS’). Bayesian binomial mixed effects models were then used to estimate the extent to which individual differences influenced SIS, together with any effects of sex, rearing history, age, prior involvement in research and task type on SIS. An estimate of repeatability found that approximately half of the variance in SIS was accounted for by individual identity, indicating that individual differences play a critical role in the social learning behaviour of chimpanzees. According to the model that best fit the data, females were, depending on their rearing history, 15–24% more likely to use social information to solve experimental tasks than males. However, there was no strong evidence of an effect of age or research experience, and pedigree records indicated that SIS was not a strongly heritable trait. spilled by the barge FLORIDA off West Falmouth, Massachusetts, we sampled for many
months along an onshore-offshore gradient of pollution, and less intensively at unoiled sites.
Analyses of hydrocarbons established that pollution was greatest and most persistent in the
intertidal and subtidal zones of Wild Harbor River, less severe in degree and duration at stations farthest from shore. A variety of concurrent analyses showed that disturbance of the fauna
was most severe and longest lasting at the most heavily oiled sites, and least severe but perceptible
at lightly oiled stations. Patterns of disturbance were not related to granulometry of
the sediments. Plants, ctustaceans, fish, and birds suffered both high mortality immediately
after the spill, and physiological and behavioral abnormalities directly related to high concentrations
of the fuel oil. Five years after the spill its effects on the biota were still detectable, and
partly degraded #2 fuel oil was still present in the sediments in Wild Harbor River and estuary.Our study was partially supported by the Federal Water Pollution Control

Pharmaceutical Digital Design: From Chemical Structure through Crystal Polymorph to Conceptual Crystallization Process
A workflow for the digital design of crystallization processes starting from the chemical structure of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) is a multistep, multidisciplinary process. A simple version would be to first predict the API crystal structure and, from it, the corresponding properties of solubility, morphology, and growth rates, assuming that the nucleation would be controlled by seeding, and then use these parameters to design the crystallization process. This is usually an oversimplification as most APIs are polymorphic, and the most stable crystal of the API alone may not have the required properties for development into a drug product. This perspective, from the experience of a Lilly Digital Design project, considers the fundamental theoretical basis of crystal structure prediction (CSP), free energy, solubility, morphology, and growth rate prediction, and the current state of nucleation simulation. This is illustrated by applying the modeling techniques to real examples, olanzapine and succinic acid. We demonstrate the promise of using ab initio computer modeling for solid form selection and process design in pharmaceutical development. We also identify open problems in the application of current computational modeling and achieving the accuracy required for immediate implementation that currently limit the applicability of the approach
Pathways into services for offenders with intellectual disabilities : childhood experience, diagnostic information and offence variables
The patterns and pathways into intellectual disability (ID) offender services were studied through case file review for 477 participants referred in one calendar year to community generic, community forensic, and low, medium, and maximum secure services. Data were gathered on referral source, demographic information, index behavior, prior problem behaviors, diagnostic information, and abuse or deprivation. Community referrers tended to refer to community services and secure service referrers to secure services. Physical and verbal violence were the most frequent index behaviors, whereas contact sexual offenses were more prominent in maximum security. Age at first incident varied with security, with the youngest in maximum secure services. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or conduct disorder was the most frequently recorded diagnosis, and severe deprivation was the most frequent adverse developmental experience. Fire starting, theft, and road traffic offenses did not feature prominently. Generic community services accepted a number of referrals with forensic-type behavior and had higher proportions of both women and people with moderate or severe ID
Dissociating the semantic function of two neighbouring subregions in the left lateral anterior temporal lobe
AbstractWe used fMRI in 35 healthy participants to investigate how two neighbouring subregions in the lateral anterior temporal lobe (LATL) contribute to semantic matching and object naming. Four different levels of processing were considered: (A) recognition of the object concepts; (B) search for semantic associations related to object stimuli; (C) retrieval of semantic concepts of interest; and (D) retrieval of stimulus specific concepts as required for naming. During semantic association matching on picture stimuli or heard object names, we found that activation in both subregions was higher when the objects were semantically related (mug–kettle) than unrelated (car–teapot). This is consistent with both LATL subregions playing a role in (C), the successful retrieval of amodal semantic concepts. In addition, one subregion was more activated for object naming than matching semantically related objects, consistent with (D), the retrieval of a specific concept for naming. We discuss the implications of these novel findings for cognitive models of semantic processing and left anterior temporal lobe function

The adequacy of current import and export controls on sealed radioactive sources.
Millions of sealed radioactive sources (SRSs) are being used for a wide variety of beneficial purposes throughout the world. Security experts are now concerned that these beneficial SRSs could be used in a radiological dispersion device to terrorize and disrupt society. The greatest safety and security threat is from those highly radioactive Category 1 and 2 SRSs. Without adequate controls, it may be relatively easy to legally purchase a Category 1 or 2 SRS on the international market under false pretenses. Additionally, during transfer, SRSs are particularly susceptible to theft since the sources are in a shielded and mobile configuration, transportation routes are predictable, and shipments may not be adequately guarded. To determine if government controls on SRS are adequate, this study was commissioned to review the current SRS import and export controls of six countries. Canada, the Russian Federation, and South Africa were selected as the exporting countries, and Egypt, the Philippines, and the United States were selected as importing countries. A detailed review of the controls in each country is presented. The authors found that Canada and Russia are major exporters, and are exporting highly radioactive SRSs without first determining if the recipient is authorized by the receiving country to own and use the SRSs. Available evidence was used to estimate that on average there are tens to possibly hundreds of intercountry transfers of highly radioactive SRSs each day. Based on these and other findings, this reports recommends stronger controls on the export and import of highly radioactive SRSs

HLA-A*23 Is Associated With Lower Odds of Acute Retroviral Syndrome in Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Infection: A Multicenter Sub-Saharan African Study
The role of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I and killer immunoglobulin-like receptor molecules in mediating acute retroviral syndrome (ARS) during human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection is unclear. Among 72 sub-Saharan African adults, HLA-A*23 was associated with lower odds of ARS (adjusted odds ratio, 0.10 [95% confidence interval, .01–.48]; P = .009), which warrants further studies to explore its role on HIV-1–specific immunopathogenesis
