He Scattering from Random Adsorbates, Disordered Compact Islands and Fractal Submonolayers: Intensity Manifestations of Surface Disorder
A theoretical study is made on He scattering from three fundamental classes
of disordered ad-layers: (a) Translationally random adsorbates, (b) disordered
compact islands and (c) fractal submonolayers. The implications of the results
to experimental studies of He scattering from disordered surfaces are
discussed, and a combined experimental-theoretical study is made for Ag
submonolayers on Pt(111). Some of the main theoretical findings are: (1)
Structural aspects of the calculated intensities from translationally random
clusters were found to be strongly correlated with those of individual
clusters. (2) Low intensity Bragg interference peaks appear even for scattering
from very small ad-islands, and contain information on the ad-island local
electron structure. (3) For fractal islands, just as for islands with a
different structure, the off-specular intensity depends on the parameters of
the He/Ag interaction, and does not follow a universal power law as previously
proposed in the literature. In the experimental-theoretical study of Ag on
Pt(111), we use first experimental He scattering data from low-coverage (single
adsorbate) systems to determine an empirical He/Ag-Pt potential of good
quality. Then, we carry out He scattering calculations for high coverage and
compare with experiments. The conclusions are that the actual experimental
phase corresponds to small compact Ag clusters of narrow size distribution,
translationally disordered on the surface.Comment: 36 double-spaced pages, 10 figures; accepted by J. Chem. Phys.,

A Hardy's Uncertainty Principle Lemma in Weak Commutation Relations of Heisenberg-Lie Algebra
In this article we consider linear operators satisfying a generalized
commutation relation of a type of the Heisenberg-Lie algebra. It is proven that
a generalized inequality of the Hardy's uncertainty principle lemma follows.
Its applications to time operators and abstract Dirac operators are also
investigated
Numerical study of multilayer adsorption on fractal surfaces
We report a numerical study of van der Waals adsoprtion and capillary
condensation effects on self-similar fractal surfaces. An assembly of uncoupled
spherical pores with a power-law distributin of radii is used to model fractal
surfaces with adjustable dimensions. We find that the commonly used fractal
Frankel-Halsey-Hill equation systematically fails to give the correct dimension
due to crossover effects, consistent with the findings of recent experiments.
The effects of pore coupling and curvature dependent surface tension were also
studied.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure

First order wetting of rough substrates and quantum unbinding
Replica and functional renormalization group methods show that, with short
range substrate forces or in strong fluctuation regimes, wetting of a
self-affine rough wall in 2D turns first-order as soon as the wall roughness
exponent exceeds the anisotropy index of bulk interface fluctuations. Different
thresholds apply with long range forces in mean field regimes. For
bond-disordered bulk, fixed point stability suggests similar results, which
ultimately rely on basic properties of quantum bound states with asymptotically
power-law repulsive potentials.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figur
Information content of female copulation calls in wild long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis)
Primates are unusual in that many females display sexual signals, such as sex skin swellings/colorations and copulation calls, without any sex role reversal. The adaptive function of these signals remains largely unclear, although it has been suggested that they provide males with information on female reproductive status. For sex skin swellings, there is increasing evidence that they represent a graded signal indicating the probability of ovulation. Data on the functional significance of copulation calls are much scarcer. To clarify the information content of such calls, we recorded copulation calls in wild long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) and analysed the structure of these calls during the ovarian cycle. Specifically, we correlated selected call parameters with the female oestrogen to progestogen ratio (obtained from faecal samples), which are known to be elevated during the female's fertile phase. In addition, we ran a general linear mixed model for these call parameters, testing factors (cycle phase, occurrence/absence of ejaculation, male dominance status, occurrence/absence of mate guarding) which potentially influence female copulation calls in primates. Our results show that copulation calls of female long-tailed macaques signal mating outcome and rank of the mating partner, but not female reproductive status. They also show for the first time on primates that copulation calls can convey information on whether a female is mate guarded or not. We suspect that the function of these calls is manipulation of male mating and mate-guarding behaviour and that in this way the degree of sperm competition and ultimately male reproductive success is influenced
Fractal Analysis of Protein Potential Energy Landscapes
The fractal properties of the total potential energy V as a function of time
t are studied for a number of systems, including realistic models of proteins
(PPT, BPTI and myoglobin). The fractal dimension of V(t), characterized by the
exponent \gamma, is almost independent of temperature and increases with time,
more slowly the larger the protein. Perhaps the most striking observation of
this study is the apparent universality of the fractal dimension, which depends
only weakly on the type of molecular system. We explain this behavior by
assuming that fractality is caused by a self-generated dynamical noise, a
consequence of intermode coupling due to anharmonicity. Global topological
features of the potential energy landscape are found to have little effect on
the observed fractal behavior.Comment: 17 pages, single spaced, including 12 figure
Observation of a local gravity potential isosurface by airborne lidar of Lake Balaton, Hungary
Airborne lidar is a remote sensing method commonly
used for mapping surface topography in high resolution.
A water surface in hydrostatic equilibrium theoretically
represents a gravity potential isosurface. Here we compare
lidar-based ellipsoidal water surface height measurements all
around the shore of a major lake with a local high-resolution
quasi-geoid model. The ellipsoidal heights of the 87 km2 we
sampled all around the shore of the 597 km2 lake surface vary
by 0.8m and strong spatial correlation with the quasi-geoid
undulation was calculated (R2 = 0.91). After subtraction of
the local geoid undulation from the measured ellipsoidal water
surface heights, their variation was considerably reduced.
Based on a network of water gauge measurements, dynamic
water surface heights were also successfully corrected for.
This demonstrates that the water surface heights of the lake
were truly determined by the local gravity potential. We conclude
that both the level of hydrostatic equilibrium of the lake
and the accuracy of airborne lidar were sufficient for identifying
the spatial variations of gravity potential
Ethics of Artificial Intelligence Demarcations
In this paper we present a set of key demarcations, particularly important
when discussing ethical and societal issues of current AI research and
applications. Properly distinguishing issues and concerns related to Artificial
General Intelligence and weak AI, between symbolic and connectionist AI, AI
methods, data and applications are prerequisites for an informed debate. Such
demarcations would not only facilitate much-needed discussions on ethics on
current AI technologies and research. In addition sufficiently establishing
such demarcations would also enhance knowledge-sharing and support rigor in
interdisciplinary research between technical and social sciences.Comment: Proceedings of the Norwegian AI Symposium 2019 (NAIS 2019),

miR-155 regulates differentiation of brown and beige adipocytes via a bistable circuit
Brown adipocytes are a primary site of energy expenditure and reside not only in classical brown adipose tissue but can also be found in white adipose tissue. Here we show that microRNA 155 is enriched in brown adipose tissue and is highly expressed in proliferating brown preadipocytes but declines after induction of differentiation. Interestingly, microRNA 155 and its target, the adipogenic transcription factor CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein beta, form a bistable feedback loop integrating hormonal signals that regulate proliferation or differentiation. Inhibition of microRNA 155 enhances brown adipocyte differentiation and induces a brown adipocyte-like phenotype ('browning') in white adipocytes. Consequently, microRNA 155-deficient mice exhibit increased brown adipose tissue function and 'browning' of white fat tissue. In contrast, transgenic overexpression of microRNA 155 in mice causes a reduction of brown adipose tissue mass and impairment of brown adipose tissue function. These data demonstrate that the bistable loop involving microRNA 155 and CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein b regulates brown lineage commitment, thereby, controlling the development of brown and beige fat cells
