Least-squares fit to a straight line when each variable contains all equal errors
The least squares fit to a straight line, when both variables are affected by
all equal uncorrelated errors, leads to very simple results for both the
estimated parameters and their standard errors, of widespread applicability. In
this paper several formulas are derived, presenting a full set of results about
the estimated parameters and their standard errors. All the results have been
validated with extensive Monte Carlo simulations. The emphasis of the paper is
on the calculation and properties of the best-fit parameters and their standard
errors.Comment: Section IV-D was corrected; reference to the published paper added;

Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Particles studies from space: super-EUSO, a possible next-generation experiment
After the Pierre Auger Observatory, it is likely that space-based experiments
might be required for next-generation studies of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic
Particles. An overview of this challenging task is presented, emphasizing the
main design issues, the criticalities and the intermediate steps required to
make this challenging task a reality
Benefits on coronary restenosis from elective paclitaxel-eluting stent implantation in patients aged 75 years and older
OBJECTIVE: Elderly patients are increasingly referred for revascularisation yet have been underrepresented in some large clinical trials. Although the advent of drug-eluting stents has dramatically reduced clinical events related to restenosis, older age remains one of the most important correlates of adverse outcome, even after an elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). We sought to evaluate the impact of paclitaxel-eluting stents on coronary restenosis in elderly patients undergoing elective PCI. METHODS: Patients undergoing successful elective PCI with stenting of de novo coronary artery lesions were identified and screened for participation in this study. All patients included in our analysis were divided into two cohort groups: patients aged or=75 years (elderly cohort). We evaluated the six-month incidence of target lesion revascularisation (TLR) and major adverse cardiac events, which included TLR, death and myocardial infarction. RESULTS: A total of 171 (58 aged >or=75 years) consecutive patients were enrolled in the study. At six months, TLR rate was similar in both groups [1.77 vs. 1.72%, odds ratio (OR) 0.97, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.08-10.9, P = 0.98, in the younger and elderly group, respectively]. Even the rate of major adverse cardiac events was comparable between the two groups (7.96 vs. 8.62%, OR 1.09, 95% CI 0.34-3.41, P = 0.88, in the younger and elderly group, respectively). Also the angiographic restenosis rates were comparable between patients or=75 years (4.42 vs. 3.46%, P = 0.76). CONCLUSIONS: After elective paclitaxel-eluting stent implantation, there is no difference in coronary restenosis in younger and elderly patients, suggesting an age-independent efficacy
Fatal course of foodborne botulism in an eight-month old infant
An 8-month old girl, weighing 9 kg, was brought by her parents at 8.15 am to the Emergency Department (ED) for a progressive worsening of weakness and acute respiratory failure. On admission, the baby presented with poor oral intake, a weak cry and extremely weak muscular body control. Poor gag and suck, unreactive mydriasis, hypotonia, lethargy and absence of peristalsis were noted. Laboratory data showed severe respiratory acidosis. Chest X-ray, electroencephalography, encephalic CT scan and MRI were all normal, as were cerebrospinal fluid analysis and viral tests. Orotracheal intubation and continuous mechanical ventilation were applied. The patient received fluids, corticosteroids, aerosol therapy, large-spectrum antibiotics and enteral-nutrition. Further investigation revealed ingestion of an improperly prepared home-canned homogenized turkey meal. Type A botulinum neurotoxin was identified. Trivalent botulinum antitoxin, prostigmine and oral activated charcoal were administered. Generalized flaccid paralysis, areflexic bilateral mydriasis, gastric stasis and deep coma persisted for the duration of the hospital stay, and the patient died of severe respiratory failure and cardiac arrest 12 days after ED admission. Botulism poisoning should be suspected in any infant presenting with feeding difficulties, constipation, descendent paralysis or acute respiratory failure. Supportive treatment and antidotal therapy should be performed as soon as a clinical diagnosis is made. We describe a case of foodborne botulism in an 8-month old infant caused by ingestion of an improperly prepared home-canned homogenized turkey meal, representing the youngest fatal case reported in medical literature
Requirements and simulation study of the performance of EUSO as external payload on board the International Space Station
The "Extreme Universe Space Observatory - EUSO" has been conceived as the first Space mission devoted to the investigation of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray, using the Earth's atmosphere as a giant detector. The scientific objectives of the experiment are to observe the UHECR spectrum above the GZK energy, with an improvement of one order of magnitude in the statistics of collected events with respect to the existing experiments, in such a way to study the source distribution in a full sky survey, as well as to open the channel (set a confidence limit) on the neutrino astronomy in this energy range. Supposed to be accommodated as external payload on board the International Space Station, EUSO phase A study has been positively completed in July 2004. Nowadays, due to funding problems of the Space Agencies involved in the project, EUSO is currently on hold. Nevertheless, as result of an end-to-end simulation approach, we summarize here the expected scientific performance coming out from the phase A, as well as the expected improvements in the technical performance of the EUSO Instrument to be achieved during Phase B, in order to fulfil the scientific objectives posed as goal of the experiment
Management of acute behavioral disturbance in the Emergency Department: An Italian position paper from AcEMC, CNI-SPDC, SIP-Lo, SITOX
The phenomenon of acute behavioral disturbance is an underrecognized and potentially life-threatening syndrome, and sometimes an emergency in psychiatric settings. Patients presenting to the Italian emergency department (ED) with acute behavioral disturbances account for approximately 3.2% of all ED visits. The spectrum of behaviors and signs overlap with many clinical disease processes. In addition to patients with behavioral problems related to mental disorders or substance abuse, there is also a large group whose behavioral emergencies directly result from medical illness. The complexity of these patients, as well as the interdisciplinary nature of their care, requires a clear and consensual framework for care. A network of Italian scientific societies developed ten reccomendations for good clinical practice. The main purpose is to draw up a document that presents a standardized method for the organization of the care of patients with acute behavioral disorders in E
LHCb Upgraded RICH 1 Engineering Design Review Report
During the Long Shutdown 2 of the LHC, the LHCb collaboration will replace the upstream
Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector (RICH 1). The magnetic shield of the current RICH 1
will be modified, new spherical and plane mirrors will be installed and a new gas enclosure
will be manufactured. New photon detectors (multianode photomultiplier tubes) will be
used and these, together with their readout electronics, require a new mechanical support
system. This document describes the new optical arrangement of RICH 1, its engineering
design, installation and alignment. A summary of the project schedule and institute
responsibilities is provided

Observation of resonances consistent with pentaquark states in decays
Observations of exotic structures in the channel, that we refer to
as pentaquark-charmonium states, in decays are
presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3/fb
acquired with the LHCb detector from 7 and 8 TeV pp collisions. An amplitude
analysis is performed on the three-body final-state that reproduces the
two-body mass and angular distributions. To obtain a satisfactory fit of the
structures seen in the mass spectrum, it is necessary to include two
Breit-Wigner amplitudes that each describe a resonant state. The significance
of each of these resonances is more than 9 standard deviations. One has a mass
of MeV and a width of MeV, while the second
is narrower, with a mass of MeV and a width of MeV. The preferred assignments are of opposite parity, with one
state having spin 3/2 and the other 5/2.Comment: 48 pages, 18 figures including the supplementary material, v2 after
